A pink granite mausoleum, built in the Byzantine style with an octagonal dome set on a square base. The frieze of letters on the main elevation declares HE THAT BELIEVETH IN ME THOUGH HE WERE DEAD YET SHALL HE LIVE, while the legend on the bronze gates reads I HAVE THE KEYS OF DEATH AND HADES. The whole is enclosed by a low wall with a flight of steps leading down to the bronze doors surmounted by a grille that form the entrance.
The mausoleum was built by Sir William Roger Brown (1831-1902) in memory of Lady Brown, of whom he once said “I have never done anything without consulting my wife and I think it would be a very good thing if everyone who has a wife acts in that way.” Sir Roger was a leading figure in Wiltshire’s textile industry and employed some thousand people in his mills. Much involved in charitable works, he provided a local school, endowed two blocks of almshouses in memory of his wife, and left money in his will for the provision of fuel for “the deserving poor”. He also set up a trust fund for the repair of the mausoleum.
Sadly, the bronze gates were reported as stolen in 2012. Given that an attempt had also been made to forcibly remove the bronze doors a decision was taken to remove them.
Confounded vehicles with computers.... (Actually experienced problems over three years on and off) but resolved just a couple of weeks ago as to why the transfer box was not switching into 4wd, by systematically replacing a number of parts in the switching system until finally a replacement actuator box was installed and away we went up these steep muddy tracks.
