Una bolla cosmica in espansione immersa nel cuore della Via Lattea. Guardando questa regione di cielo non osserviamo semplicemente una nebulosa, ma una stella che sta letteralmente scolpendo il proprio ambiente prima del suo ultimo, grandioso atto.

 

La protagonista di questa bellissima immagine è la Nebulosa Crescente (NGC 6888), nella costellazione del Cigno, ripresa con 90 minuti di integrazione attraverso un rifrattore 72ED, una ASI 533 MC Pro e filtro dual-band SV220, direttamente dal cielo cittadino.

 

Al centro della nebulosa si trova WR 136, una rarissima stella di Wolf-Rayet che sta vivendo una delle ultime fasi della propria esistenza. I suoi potentissimi venti stellari, che viaggiano a migliaia di chilometri al secondo, stanno spazzando via gli strati esterni della stella e comprimendo il gas circostante, modellando la spettacolare struttura che osserviamo oggi. Tra qualche centinaio di migliaia di anni, questo gigante stellare concluderà la propria vita in una supernova.

 

Per l'elaborazione ho utilizzato una variante della palette HSO, che mette in evidenza la diversa natura dei gas presenti nella regione. La Nebulosa Crescente emerge con intense tonalità azzurre, dovute alla forte emissione dell'ossigeno ionizzato, mentre il vasto sfondo rosso che permea il campo è dominato dall'idrogeno ionizzato delle immense nebulosità che attraversano questa zona del Cigno.

 

Ciò che appare come una delicata nube colorata è in realtà una struttura larga oltre 20 anni luce, situata a circa 5.000 anni luce dalla Terra: una testimonianza spettacolare della continua lotta tra gravità, radiazione e venti stellari che modellano la nostra galassia.

There was a time when you’d need a large sensor camera with a bright lens and a steady hand to take a picture like this. No longer: just whip your phone out, point and shoot. Liberating, and much less weight and bulk.
