Randall Shedd (R-Cullman) left, and state Rep. Phillip Pettus (R-Killen), Corrections Commissioner Jeff Dunn and others. Limestone, like all of the state's prisons, is overcrowded. Gov. Assemblyman David Weprin, Chair of the Assembly Committee on Corrections, Religious Leaders, Union Representatives, Elected Officials and Major Advocacy Coalition addressed the assembled audience in a rally on February 26th 2017; at the steps of New York City Hall, to stand together in opposition to Governor Cuomo's proposed cuts to visits in New York State maximum-security prisons and demand that this proposal does not come to pass.

The Vienna-based Group of Friends of the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, also known as the Nelson Mandela Rules, co-chaired by Germany and South Africa, convened for a special meeting on Monday, 28 January to renew its commitment to the practical application of the Rules and the work of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in the field of prison reform.
