In this intricate piece of fictional writing Barry Lopez has created an imaginary academic submission to a historical journal. Written by the aging historian Rubén Mendoza Vega, the article, though only one paragraph long, uses 16 footnotes that add depth and contour to the personality of the writer. Following the footnotes, the reader can assemble a puzzle out of the old man’s life, dispositions and prejudices.

Kathrine Campbell Pedersen, half Danish and half British, paints with a shimmering palette of colour, arranged in grids or columns, which appear to focus on pure abstract forms. However, her subject matters are often based on an exploration of the visual language of statistics and frequencies. Separated from their source these complex images become a meditation on the pleasure of information itself. Her paintings and limited edition prints of her work will be available to purchase during July's Open Studios.

"Giralamo Savanarola" 6 color lithograph 30” X 22”
Fra Giralamo Savanarola helped inspire the Florentine citizens to expel the Medici family from Florence in the late 1400's. Savanarola's passionate and fiery sermons brought a puritanical lifestyle to the city that gave birth to theRenaissance. Savanarola affected artists such as Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Filippino Lippi. In 1498, Savanarola was tried for heresy and burned in the main Plazza of Florence. Was it because the Pope was trying to regaincontrol over this loose canon of a priest or were the Florentines tired of living a fundamentalist, puritan life?

I don't usually post shots about my process of printmaking, but here goes.
This is a drawing of Countess, Lady Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), who published the first computer program. She worked together with Charles Babbage, the inventor of the Analytical Engine (the first - analogue! - computer), correcting his notes on how to calculate Bernoulli Numbers with the engine. More importantly, she (a great communicator, daughter of Lord Byron) was able to understand and explain the workings of the analytical engine and the potential of computing machines. Her comments seem visionary to the modern reader.
She is shown in front of my sketch of one of Babbage's drawings for gears within his machine. Also included are some equations for Bernoulli numbers. I am still fiddling with the composition and things may change.
The image of her is inspired by a couple of well-known engravings. This is drawn on a lino block. Everything will be reversed, when ultimately I carve and print it.
