Born in Bangkok, Princess Marsi Paribatra (1930-2013) was the only daughter of Prince Chumbot Paribatra who began her career as a self-taught artist. She was exposed to fantastic art and surrealism during her studies at Sorbonne University, Paris. Steeped in European art history, she explored fantasy, dreams, mythology, and mysticism, and participated at Salon des Comparisons, Musee d'Art Moderne in Paris. She found affiliation with fantastic art that explore, dreams, mythology, mysticism, bestiary, fables, and fairy tales. In the domain of phantasm, Princess Marsi Paribatra compared them with Hindu-Buddhist deities.
Princess Marsi Paribatra met Salvadore Dali and discussed about her dreams that were mostly figurative with nature, animals, and gardens, as well as birth, love, old age, and death. Princess Marsi Paribatra depicted all kinds of animals with centaurs, chimeras and human-beasts roaming in bacchanalian reverie. She lived in Annot alone with her cats, dogs and canaries in the woods.
Princess Marsi Paribatra took interest in Dorothea Tanning and Leonor Fini, whose subjects focus on female bodies, erotic pleasures, and isolation of women. In Noah's Ark, 1991 and Leda and the Swan, 1999, animals and masked creatures mingle with humans and deities. She referred to Greek mythology in which Zeus came to Leda in the form of the swan to seduce her. Scenes of mother earth and goddess worship relate to Nurture Gaia which inspired the theme of BAB 2024.
