Happy summertime, Mighty LA District! Hooah – we got our own month!! Of course, we also share it with some rather obscure, if not downright weird, other professions and causes. To wit, June is also - no, not kidding - Skyscraper Month, Potty Training Awareness Month (OK, I guess that one’s relatively useful to most), National Iced Tea Month, National Bathroom Reading Month (I so want to know who brought THAT one to the hallowed halls of Congress), National Candy Month, National Accordion Awareness Month and National Smile Month, just to name a few. There are many others if you do a quick web search and need a chuckle or four. But I digress.

June is, in fact, National Safety Month. Every year the National Safety Council folks promote a number of things, including having a weekly topic. And this year, we actually have 5 weeks in the month, so we have an extra topic. Rather than write not nearly enough about each of the 5 topics, I’m going to give you the links for each of the weeks. There’s some really good stuff here that you can use, both at work and at home. So, without further adieu:

Week 1 - Summertime Safety

Week 2 - Preventing Overexertion

Week 3 - Teen Driving Safety

Week 4 - Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls

Week 5 - On the Road, Off the Phone

Now, you’ll find that a number of the links require a sing-up or registration to fully use them and download materials. But that’s pretty much the case with most websites these days. And the NSC is a DOD Partner in the Safety Business, so not to worry.

Let’s face it; in reality every day is a safety day. Every single day you stop at Red Lights. Every day you don’t stick your fork into an electric socket (well, none that I know of, anyway). Every single day of the year we all practice some kind of safe behavior, however small it may be. So take the time to visit these websites and tune up your safety engines.

By the way, last month we only had a small number of folks play the Safety Jeopardy game. No winners. Two from Fort Huachuca came very, very close. There’s a Safety Excellence Coin and a certificate-suitable-for-framing still in my office if someone wins. I’ll extend the game to the end of June.

As always, drive safe, drive sober and buckle up! Safety Strong, People Always!

Oil tankers are the floating goldmines of the ocean and it is of little wonder that pirates see them as attractive, if not imposing, targets.

This message was seen on twitter, it pretty much sums it up, and it puts the problem into perspective, when will we ever learn?

To prevent the fish sticks from getting too soggy I heated them the night before, refrigerated them, and briefly fried them in the morning. SUCCESS! :D

I should've done the same thing to the lychees-- their flavour mixed in with the barley from being the the fridge together the night before. :S

The bones start weakening, the movements slow down, and gray hair turns white with need for glasses and hearing aids. Another prominent factor that confirms and shows all ages is sagging skin. The skin loosens and hangs as the muscles slack down.

colori pi svariati, paesi dai vicoli angusti dove il tempo sembra essersi fermato;

It would be easy to look at St Augustine and not see past the belltower. What belltower I hear you ask. Well, that triple candlesnuffer thing beside the stable like entrance of the porch.

You see, I had forgotten how fantastic St Augustine was. I was early into the church odyssey thing back in 2009, and I was new to the whole church thing.

Yes, it has the belltower. Yes it has that porch with those stable doors. Yes it has that wonderful cast iron font. The church is huge, and difficult for me to judge how it evolved over the centuries.

Let me leave it to others to describe the church:

-----------------------------------------------------

The Church of St Augustine was constructed circa 1250 on a mound to protect it from flooding, probably on the site of a Norman church. The church is entered by the fourteenth century North door with wooden gates, the upper two were stored within the church and the lower doors were topped with spikes to prevent horses jumping the gates during Divine service. There was once a mounting block outside the church however it was removed less than 50 years ago.

Once through the porch you enter the North Aisle, in the western end is a closed off Chapel, near to this is the mechanism for the clock which is dedicated to the men of Brookfield who lost their lives whilst serving in World War Two, and the east end, which once housed a chapel to Blessed Virgin, is now home to an organ, installed in 1969.

An arcade separates the North Aisle from the Nave, at the end of this at the eastern end is a corbel carved into a face. The font can be found at the western end of the nave and is one of only thirty lead fonts in the country, it is decorated with the zodiac sings and occupations of the months. The Nave and North Aisle hold box pews, and at the eastern end of the Nave is the two tier pulpit with was once three tier, this stands besides the choir pews. Within the Chancel is the alter which stands in front of the remains of an aumbry, to the south is an early piscine and a two-seated sedilia. The arcades separating the North and South Aisles have suffered severe subsidence, the result being they both lean quite obviously. It has been said by an architect that the arcades separating the Nave and South Aisle lean so much that it is beyond the theoretical point of collapse!

The south aisle has had its box pews removed due to a very bad case of woodworm which now leaves room for the altar from the east end of the North Aisle and now used as the War Memorial Altar. At the western end is the Tithe Pen, this housed the weights and measures from the times when the vicar was entitled to a tithe, the complete set are now shown in a glass case and are the only remaining items of this kind in Kent. The eastern end of the South Aisle has a piscine and above this is a remarkable painting, dated from the late 1200?s and repainted in the 14th century. It depicts Thomas Becket's martyrdom. Where an altar once stood near this wall painting is now a large table tomb in memory to John Plomer who was three times Mayor of Romney.

Beside the church is a free standing belfry, there are many theories giving the reason for the belfry to stand upon the ground, one being that it was blown down from atop the church twice during strong winds and it was decided as it was so keen to stay on the ground then that is where it will stay. The tower holds six bells, only one being original and dated from 1450, three dated 1685 and the old tenor bell also dated 1685 was cast into two smaller bells.

BROOKLAND,

SO called from the several brooks and waterings within the bounds of it, lies the next parish southeastward, mostly within the level of Walland Marsh, and within the jurisdiction of the justices of the county; but there are some lands, which are reputed to be within this parish, containing altogether about 124 acres, which lie in detached pieces at some distance south-eastward from the rest of it, mostly near Ivychurch, some other parishes intervening, which lands are within the level of Romney Marsh, and within the liberty and jurisdiction of the justices of it.

The PARISH of Brookland lies on higher ground than either Snargate or Fairfield last described, and consequently much drier. It is more sheltered with trees, and inclosed with hedges, than any of the neighbouring parishes. The village is neat and rather pleasant, considering the situation, and the houses, as well as inhabitants, of a better sort than are usually seen in the Marsh. The church stands in the middle of it. The lands towards the south are by far the most fertile, for towards Snargate they are very poor and wet, and much covered with rushes and thistles. It consists in general of marsh-land, there not being above thirty acres of land ploughed throughout the parish, which altogether contains about 1730 acres of land.

A fair is held here yearly on the feast of St. Peter ad Vincula, or Lammas-day, being August I, for toys and pedlary.

The MANORS of Fairfield, Apledore, Bilsington, and Court at Wick, extend over this parish, subordinate to which is THE MANOR OF BROOKLAND, which has long since lost even the reputation of having been a manor. It was in early times the patrimony of the family of Passele, or Pashley, as they were afterwards called, whose seat was at Evegate, in Smeeth, (fn. 1) of whom Edward de Passeley is the first that is discovered in public records to have been possessed of this manor, and this appears by the inquisition taken after his death, anno 19 Edward II. Soon after which it was alienated to Reginald de Cobham, a younger branch of the Cobhams, of Cobham, whose descendants were seated at Sterborough castle, in Surry, whence they were called Cobhams, of Sterborough, and they had afterwards summons to parliament among the barons of this realm. At length Sir Thomas Cobham died possessed of it in the 11th year of king Edward IV. leaving an only daughter and sole heir, who carried it in marriage to Sir Edward Borough, of Gainsborough, in Lincolnshire, whose son and heir Thomas was summoned to parliament as lord Burgh, or as it is usually pronounced, Borough, anno 21 king Henry VIII. and left a son and heir Thomas, lord Burgh, whose lands were disgavelled by the act anno 31 Henry VIII. His son William, lord Burgh, about the 12th year of queen Elizabeth's reign, passed it away to Eversfield, of Suffex, from whom it was alienated soon afterwards to Godfrey, of Lid, at which time this estate seems to have lost its name of having been a manor. He, before the end of that reign, sold it to Wood, by whom it was again alienated in the beginning of king James I.'s reign to Mr. John Fagge, of Rye, whose descendant John Fagge, esq. of Wiston, in Suffex, was created a baronet in 1660. He had a numerous issue, of which only three sons and two daughters survived. Of the former, Sir Robert, the eldest, was his successor in title; Charles was ancestor of the present baronet, the Rev. Sir John Fagge, of Chartham; and the third son Thomas Fagge, esq. succeeded by his father's will to this estate at Brookland. His son John Meres Fagge, esq. of Glynely, in Sussex, left surviving an only daughter Elizabeth, who on his death in 1769, entitled her husband Sir John Peachy, bart-of West Dean, in Sussex, to the possession of it. He died s. p. and she surviving him, again became entitled to it in her own right, and is at this time the present owner of it.

There are noparochial charities.

BROOKLAND is within the ECCLESIASTICAL JURISDICTION of the diocese of Canterbury, and deanry of Limne.

The church, which is dedicated to St. Augustine, is a very large handsome building, consisting of three isles and three chancels. The steeple stands on the north side, and at some small distance from it, in which are five bells. The church is kept exceedingly neat and clean. It is cieled throughout, and handsomely pewed. In the high chancel there is a confessionary, and a nich for holy water within the altar-rails. There are several memorials in it, but none of any account worth mentioning. At the west end is a gallery, lately erected at the charge of the parish. The font is very curious, made of cast lead, having on it two ranges of emblematical figures, twenty in each range. The steeple is framed of remarkable large timber. It is built entirely of wood, of an octagon form, perpendicular about five feet from the bottom, and from thence leffening to a spire at top, in which it has three different copartments or stories, the two uppermost larger at the bottom, and projecting over those underneath them. Although there are but five bells in it, yet it has frames for several more. The whole is much out of the perpendicular leaning towards the church. In the church-yard are several tombs and gravestones for the Reads.

The church of Brookland was part of the antient possessions of the monastery of St. Augustine, to which it was appropriated by pope Clement V. at the request of Ralph Bourne, the abbot of it, in king Edward II.'s reign, but the abbot declined putting the bull for this purpose in force, till a more favourable opportunity. At length John, abbot of St. Augustine, in 1347, obtained another bull from pope Clement VI for the appropriation of it, and having three years afterwards obtained the king's licence for this purpose, (fn. 2) the same was confirmed by archbishop Islip in 1359, who next year endowed the vicarage of this church by his decree, by which he assigned, with the consent of the abbot and convent, and of the vicar, of the rents and profits of the church, to John de Hoghton, priest, then admitted perpetual vicar to the vicarage of it, and canonically instituted, and to his successors in future in it, a fit portion from which they might be fitly maintained and support the undermentioned burthens. In the first place he decreed and ordained, that the religious should build on the soil of the endowment of the church, at their own costs and expences, a competent mansion, with a sufficient close and garden, for the vicar and his successors, free from all rent and secular service, to be repaired and maintained from that time by the vicar for the time being; who on the presentation of the religious to be admitted and instituted by him or his successors, into the vicarage, should likewise have the great tithes of the lands lying on the other side of le Re, towards Dover, viz. beyond the bridge called Brynsete, and towards the parish churches of Brynsete, Snaves, and Ivercherche, belonging to the church of Brokelande, and likewise the tithes arising from the sheaves of gardens or orchards dug with the foot, and also all oblations made in the church or parish, and all tithes of hay, calves, chicken, lambs, pigs, geese, hens, eggs, ducks, pidgeons, bees, honey, wax, swans, wool, milkmeats, pasture, flax, hemp, garden-herbs, apples, vetches, merchandizes, fishings, fowlings, and all manner of small tithes arising from all things whatsoever. And he taxed and estimated the said portion at the annual value of eight marcs sterling, at which sum he decreed the vicar ought to contribute in future, to the payment of the tenth and all other impositions happening, of whatsoever sort. Not intending that the vicar of this church should be entitled to, or take of the issues and rents of it, any thing further than is expressed before, but that he should undergo the burthen of officiating in the same, either by himself or some other sit priest, in divine offices, and in the finding of lights in the chancel, and of bread and wine for the celebration of masses, the washing of vestments, and the reparation of the books of the church, and should nevertheless pay the procuration due to the archbishop, on his visitation. But the rest of the burthens incumbent on the church, and no ways here expressed, should belong to the abbot and convent, &c. (fn. 3) After this, the church and advowson of the vicarage of Brookland remained part of the possessions of the above monastery till the final dissolution of it, anno 30 Henry VIII. when it was, with all its revenues, surrendered into the king's hands, where this rectory and advowson staid but a short time, for the king, by his dotation charter, settled them on his newerected dean and chapter of Canterbury, part of whose possessions they continue at this time.

On the abolition of deans and chapters, after the death of king Charles I. this parsonage was surveyed in 1650, when it appeared that it consisted of a close of land of one acre, on which stood the parsonage barne, and other outhouses, with the tithe of corn and other profits belonging to it, estimated coibs annis at twenty four pounds, all which were by indenture, in 1635, demised for twenty-one years, at the yearly rent of eight pounds, but were worth, over and above the said rent, sixteen pounds per annum, and that the lessee was to repair the premises, and the chancel of the parish church.

In 1384 this church or rectory appropriate was valued at 13l. 6s. 8d. but anno 31 Henry VIII. it was demised to ferme at only 8l. 3s. 4d. It is now demised on a beneficial lease by the dean and chapter, at the yearly rent of eight pounds to Mrs. Woodman, the present lessee of it. The vicarage of this church is valued in the king's books at 17l. 12s. 8½d. and the yearly tenths at 1l. 15s. 3¼d. In 1587 it was valued at sixty pounds, communicants one hundred and sixtysix, and in 1640 the same, and it is now of about the same value.

There is a modus of one shilling per acre on all the grass-lands in this parish. The vicar is entitled to all the small tithes, subject to this modus, throughout the parish, and to the tithes of corn of those lands, being one hundred and twenty-four acres, which lie in detached pieces beyond Brenset bridge, in Romney Marsh, as mentioned before, in the endowment of this vicarage.

A long low church with the most famous spire in Kent. This three-stage 'candle-snuffer' erection which stand son the ground instead of on a tower is the result of several enlargements of a thirteenth-century bell cage and its subsequent weatherproofing with cedar shingles. It contains a peal of six bells, the oldest of which is mid-fifteenth century in date. The spire is surmounted by a winged dragon weathervane, dating from 1797. The monster has a prominent forked tongue. The reason for the bells being hung in a cage rather than a tower is shown inside the church where the pillars of the nave have sunk into the soft ground and splayed out to north and south. The tie-beams of the roof came away from the walls and have had to be lengthened by the addition of new timber supports. The outstanding Norman font in cast lead has been fully described in Part 1. To the south of the church is a headstone incorporating the only 'Harmer Plaque' in Kent - a terracotta panel made in East Sussex where they are a common feature.

Wish there were signs like this everywhere. Most of the fires on Vancouver Island this summer have been human caused. Wish all smokers used ashtrays in their cars instead of habit-ually tossing cigarettes out their vehicles.

For those of you who didn't know, I was recently hired by General Motors as a digital sculptor. That necessitated moving to the Detroit area again and getting my own apartment. So, as I listen to a broadcast of Casey Kasem from 1971, here are some highlights of the new place... still acquiring cool stuff, mind you.

From complex polymers and plastics to more common items such as window glass and candle wax, amorphous materials abound. These noncrystalline solids are not only prevalent in everyday life but also are an important research area at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. By varying the composition of different elements, Lab scientists have created novel materials such as amorphous carbon films to prevent wear and friction on computer hard disks and complex nanolaminates with unusual ductility. Now, Livermore researchers working on the High-Performance Corrosion-Resistant Materials (HPCRM) project have developed amorphous metal alloys, also known as metallic glasses, that can withstand corrosive environments. Iron-based amorphous alloys can be applied as thermal spray coatings to protect materials exposed to harsh environments, such as containers used for the long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel. Mount Whitney is the highest summit in the contiguous United States with an elevation of 14,505 feet (4,421 m). It is on the boundary between California's Inyo and Tulare counties, 84.6 miles (136.2 km) west-northwest of the lowest point in North America at Badwater in Death Valley National Park at 282 ft (86 m) below sea level. The west slope of the mountain is in Sequoia National Park and the summit is the south end of the John Muir Trail which runs 211.9 mi (341.0 km) from Happy Isles in Yosemite Valley. The east slope is in the Inyo National Forest in Inyo County.

The summit of Whitney is on the Sierra Crest and near many of the highest peaks of the Sierra Nevada. The peak rises 10,778 ft (3,285 m) or just over two miles above the town of Lone Pine 15 miles to the east, in the Owens Valley.

Mount Whitney is above the tree line and has an alpine climate and ecology. Very few plants grow near the summit: one example is the Sky Pilot, a cushion plant that grows low to the ground. The only animals are transient, such as the butterfly Parnassius phoebus and the Gray-crowned Rosy Finch.

The estimated elevation of the summit of Mount Whitney has changed over the years. The technology of elevation measurement has become more refined and, more importantly, the vertical coordinate system has changed. The peak was commonly said to be at 14,494 ft (4,418 m) and this is the elevation stamped on the USGS brass benchmark disk on the summit. An older plaque on the summit (sheet metal with black lettering on white enamel) reads "elevation 14,496.811 feet" but this was estimated using the older vertical datum (NGVD29) from 1929. Since then the shape of the Earth (the geoid) has been estimated more accurately. Using a new vertical datum established in 1988 (NAVD88) the benchmark is now estimated to be at 14,505 ft (4,421 m).

The eastern slope of Whitney is far steeper than its western slope. This is because the entire Sierra Nevada is the result of a fault-block that is analogous to a cellar door: the door is hinged on the west and is slowly rising on the east. The rise is caused by a normal fault system that runs along the eastern base of the Sierra, below Mount Whitney. Thus, the granite that forms Mount Whitney is the same as the granite that forms the Alabama Hills thousands of feet below. The raising of Whitney (and the downdrop of the Owens Valley) is due to the same geological forces that cause the Basin and Range Province: the crust of much of the intermontane west is slowly being stretched.

The most popular route to the summit is by way of the Mount Whitney Trail which starts at Whitney Portal, at an elevation of 8,360 ft (2,550 m), 13 mi (21 km) west of the town of Lone Pine. The hike is about 22 mi (35 km) round trip with an elevation gain of over 6,100 ft (1,900 m). Permits are required year round, and to prevent overuse a limited number of permits are issued by the Forest Service between May 1 and November 1. Most hikers do the trip in two days. Those in good physical condition sometimes attempt to reach the summit and return to Whitney Portal in one day, thus requiring only a somewhat easier-to-obtain "day use" permit rather than the overnight permit. This is considered an "extreme" day hike, which normally involves leaving Whitney Portal before sunrise and 12 to 18 hours of strenuous hiking, while struggling with altitude sickness, cold air, and occasionally treacherous surface conditions (because snow and/or ice are normally present on parts of the trail, except for a short period from early July to late September).

Music in the Nazi state

Waltz for Nazis

The Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic served the Nazi state as well as the rival musicians could.

By Fritz Trümpi

In return, the renowned orchestra performed the main work of the musical representation of the Nazi state. In order to be able to continue this work in wartime without compromise, Goebbels gave the musicians the status of being indispensable until the end of the war, thus, he prevented them collectively from the entry into the Wehrmacht.

With the beginning of the war, travel activity of the Berlin ones increased rapidly. Between 1940 and 1944, the number of foreign concerts was up to three times as high as in pre-war times. Depending on the occasion, the orchestra provided the backing music for the German cannon thunder in the conquered territories, or appeased it in neutral states with its shawm sounds.

The Viennese were the tour monopoly of their Berlin colleagues a thorn in the eye. "If the Berliner Philharmoniker had left, the Propaganda Ministry would have paid for it, but we should pay for it ourselves," notes the protocol in April 1943, three months after the catastrophe of Stalingrad, when it came to financing a concert tour to Sweden.

As a rule, the budget was missing for long trips. Gauleiter Schirach did not have the financial means of Goebbels. Nevertheless, he protected his Philharmonic on the model of the Propaganda Minister. He also obtained an indispensable position for the orchestra until the end of the war. For the 100th birthday of the orchestra, without further he had renamed a part of the Vienna Augustinians street into Philharmoniker street. During the philharmonic's jubilee concerts, all other orchestral events were banned. The musicians thanked him by awarding the protector the honorary ring of the orchestra or striking up free of charge at Schirach's private receptions.

The different instrumentalization of the two rival orchestras can be explained by their different political references: here the Viennese are dealing privately with the highest Nazi representative in Vienna, there the interdependence between the Berliners and the minister responsible for propaganda across the Reich. This was accompanied by differences in the music-aesthetic attributions. Wilhelm Furtwängler, the central figure in both orchestras, stressed in 1942 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Vienna Philharmonic: »The reason for your exceptional position is that the Philharmonic Orchestra is exclusively a Vienna orchestra.«

In Berlin, on the other hand, you do not make music in Berlin style, but »German«, according to Furtwängler. Wilhelm Jerger, who was then head of the orchestra, also saw the specific sound of the Vienna Philharmonic rooted on the Danube: "It is an outgrowth of Vienna, of old ground surface, whose musicality is proverbial!" In contrast, the influential Berlin music writer Oswald Schrenk put the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1943 expressly in the context of the state: they were the "most important musical bearers of culture in the Greater German Reich" and had rendered "immeasurable services to the German cause".

However, the politicization of the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic in National Socialism have similarities. The high proportion of NSDAP members in both orchestras shows great loyalty to the regime. Especially among the Viennese, the proportion was exorbitantly high: Counting the memberships in affiliated organizations, party members accounted for 47 percent almost half of the entire orchestra staff. 25 musicians, just under a quarter, were also so-called illegals, who had been loyal to the Nazis during the ban of the NSDAP in the Corporate state. In contrast, the proportion of the Berliner Philharmoniker with about 20 percent of NSDAP members was significantly lower.

However, the most momentous aspect of their politicization in both orchestras is the exclusion of Jewish orchestra members. To prevent the orchestra from collapsing, the authorities occasionally resorted to special authorizations for both orchestras that were issued to musicians if they were only partially of Jewish origin or married to Jewish women. For the orchestra members of Jewish origin, however, there was no room left in both orchestras. The four Jewish members of the Berliner Philharmoniker had to leave the orchestra until the season of 1935/36 and were forced to emigrate - but the Berlin management revealed at least a delaying tactic in enforcing the exclusions.

By contrast, 15 orchestral musicians were expelled from the ranks of the Vienna Philharmonic in 1938, largely for "racial" reasons, but in a few cases also because of their political past. The Jewish members of the Vienna Philharmonic were only partially able to escape: seven were murdered in the concentration camps or died on arrest or deportation. After hints at a sympathy for the fate of the Jewish colleagues, let alone at rescue attempts on the part of the orchestra, one searches however in vain in the log books of the Vienna Philharmonic.

“On the gods, I can affirm neither that they do exist nor that they do not exist: much prevents the acquisition of such knowledge beginning with the obscurity addressed by the question and followed by the brevity of human life.”

Protagoras (5th century BC)

“Gods of Asia” (in contrast to “The Gods of Asia” that would be of ridiculously pretentious scope) is a title that runs of risk of getting mired in equivocation. We are victims of the inappropriateness of a word’s meaning in one language when applied to another and particularly when dealing with the word god. The terms monotheist and polytheist are Western notions that prove rather lacking when considering Hinduism or Taoism. The first Western missionaries reaching Asia referred constantly to idolatry whenever encountering statues in places of worship that seemed strange to them. However, having hardly begun explaining the great Asian religions, we are immediately struck by the sheer similarities that they share with the great Western religions that shock anybody attempting to move on from the prevailing prejudices. The idea of a single God, considered by some to be the great Judaic religious contribution, was already in practice in Asia. The Brahman in Hinduism, the Tao of the Chinese are single, the origin of everything and everything exists in them. It would bizarre for the Hindus and Taoists to depict the almighty as a grizzled old man with a white beard not so much due to the fact that this would be sacrilege, as Islamic believers would hold, but rather because both fall outside the scope of any human understanding and are beyond any means of representation. The concept that “God made man in His image” swiftly becomes “man made God in his image”.

Furthermore, when dealing with Asian religions, there are references to gods when other terms would be used by Western religions. The Hindu gods are, in fact, the diverse manifestations of Brahman acting in the world and only as such susceptible to depiction. The Chinese gods bear a closer relationship with the saints of Christianity. Each serves its own particular function, such as Eloy as patron saint of goldsmiths or Saint Genevieve as the patron saint of Paris, which in the latter case would be known as the goddess of the Parisian earth within a Chinese pantheon.

Some of the similarities existing among all the religions are indeed surprising. The idea of the trinity is central to Hinduism. Given that everything born has to one day die, Brahman becomes creator, conservator and destroyer as reflected in the three manifestations: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Vishnu is incarnate as God was incarnated in Jesus Christ. The Chinese are somewhat more abstract in this area given that their belief system holds that from the Three are born all beings.

Each founder of a religion is inseparable from the surrounding environment in which emerging. Just as the New Testament is not understandable unless its message is situated within the context of the Old Testament, the message of Buddha Shakyamuni was announced within a Hindu society and does not call into question beliefs such as reincarnation or karma. The Taoist religion becomes incomprehensible if stripped of either the Taoist philosophy that preceded it or the beliefs of ancient China.

Another common point is that the original message has been subject to whatever first the disciples or later the faithful decided to do with it given that the founders never actually set it down in writing. Neither Jesus Christ nor Shakyamuni not to mention Zhang Daoling left any written legacy. It was only through witnesses that we gain our awareness of their thinkings and teachings: rather disturbing when considering the general accuracy of such accounts. Just as Jesus Christ would not agree with what Churches have done with his message and in his name down through the centuries, Shakyamuni would not recognise his own thinking in the elaborations of those wishing to spread his message. Many founders of religions sought only to provide an answer to a precise question. Just as Jesus Christ wanted to introduce charity, Shakyamuni wanted to find a means to escape the suffering of existence. Just as Jesus Christ did not call into question the God of the Bible, Shakyamuni made no pronouncement on either Brahman or nirvana to such an extent of stating that Buddhism was a religion without a god.

Despite all that has been written, Judaism, Christianity and Islam are not the only book based religions. Buddhism, Jainism and Taoism are based on texts even if quite different to the Bible or the Koran. As regards the mirabilia spreading all the beliefs on either side of the Urals, it should be remembered that Asian thinkers knew how to distinguish between directly reading texts in order to gain the admiration of crowds and their interpretation at the philosophical or theological level and demonstrating a thorough understanding in the meantime.

We may inquire as to the origins of all these similarities between the world’s great religions. Are they due to the very nature of the human spirit? From a shared human story dating back to the beginnings of history? Factual influences for this, however, appear to be extremely limited even if we may recall that the halos of Western saints derive from the aura of light that is depicted around Buddhas in Asia and the concept of Hell complete with boiling cauldrons and devouring fires also originates in the East (with the difference that in the Orient, Hell is not eternal).

May it be said, as an Indian thinker once wrote, that all men worship the same god under different names? No. While the concept of a single god exists in the Asian religions and accepting that all world religions have undergone sometimes less than inspired revisions running counter to their original content, and that there are particularities common to all, it would certainly be fallacious not to see the differences inherent to each. Taoism provides an explanation of the world but each is free to accept it or otherwise and engages in no form of proselytism. Buddhism seeks to end with suffering in the hope that all men may benefit from its message but without ever becoming an imposition and sought to be tolerant regarding long existing local beliefs given its acceptance that spirits exist within living beings. As regards theological differences, these are only too susceptible to generating interminable debates.

However, this is not the intention of this exhibition nor does it involve presenting the gods of India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, China, Vietnam, Korea and Japan with a concern to somehow encapsulate the beliefs of others into the content of picturesque or striking images. It is rather more about setting out why they are worthy of the same respect that we provide our own religions.

The exhibition thus seeks to raise awareness about certain aspects of the religious art of Asia, particularly at the popular level, and introduce the still living mythology underlying the objects on display. Hence, all the great religions of the continent are included: Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism and Shinto. While the Western word “god”, corresponds closest to abstract

Asian concepts such as Brahman in India or Tao in China, the supernatural beings represented here are far more manifestations of the divine in the human world.

Protágoras (século V a.C.)

Daí estarem representadas as grandes religiões do continente, o hinduísmo, o budismo, o taoísmo, o shintô.

To prevent prisoner escapes, the SS surrounded the camp with a double row of electrified barbed wire fencing. There were cases in which desperate prisoners, unable to bear the camp terror, chose to throw themselves "on the wire"--the term used in the camp jargon to describe suicide by electrocution on the electrified fence. The total length of the fence was 1.2 miles at the Auschwitz I main camp and 7.4 miles at Auschwitz II-Birkenau.

On May 6, 2023 at 5:45PM the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 640 block of S San Pedro Street in Downtown Los Angeles. The first arriving fire officer reported finding a two story commercial building with an outside fire which was extending into the building. He requested three additional task forces and the firefighters initiated an offensive operation.

Facing both rolling steel and heavy duty security doors, firefighters used rotary saws to cut their way into the building. Once inside, fire attack found the fire extending to just the area at the front of the building. The 38 firefighters on scene (prior to the assignment of the additionally requested fire companies), operating under the command of Battalion Chief Nicholas Ferrari, quickly got water on the blaze and achieved a full knockdown in 30 minutes. The fire was held at the front of the building and prevented from extending back through the structure.

One male firefighter sustained a non-life threatening leg injury while working to gain access to the building. He was transported to the hospital for care.

The fire was determined to have originated outside and extended into the building. A thorough search of the structure found no occupants inside.

Cap from one of the beers at the party. So true.

The second week of camp was so much fun and the hot weather didn’t prevent us from enjoying all the wonderful activities. To honor this week’s theme, “Celebrate America,” the campers enjoyed making hand print flag t-shits. Check online for really cute pictures. The children also decorated sandwich cookies with red, white and blue sprinkles. Yum!

This week in Ceramics, The Willows learned how to pound out the clay into circles to make their hand or foot prints. The children were excited to meet, Billy or Rosie, the ponies and all were smiling while riding. Also, the children continued to master their techniques in swimming and can’t wait to demonstrate their skills on visiting day next week. In Woodcraft, the children had fun painting and coloring their wall organizers, All the campers had a terrific time in Mini-Golf, Soccer, Dance, Gymnastics and Tennis and each child has found his/her favorite activities.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone on Friday July 11th for our visiting day. Remember to label everything your child brings to camp.

Have a great weekend!

"Keep matches from children" (Look & Learn, 1971)

Chief Superintendent Rebekah Sutcliffe and the panel.

Greater Manchester Police has launched (24 April 2014) the North West segment of a national campaign to warn young people of the dangers of travelling to Syria.

The event, hosted by Chief Superintendent Rebekah Sutcliffe from GMP and held at the British Muslim Heritage Centre in Whalley Range, was attended by Prevent workers and a spokesperson from the charity Syria Relief. It was aimed at encouraging women to reach out to other women who are concerned about young people who may be planning to travel to Syria. Chief Superintendent Sutcliffe urged community representatives to continue the conversation within their communities so that we can all play a part in protecting young people from these risks.

Similar events were held across the whole of the UK today in an effort to reach out to as many women from the affected communities as possible. To support the campaign, a leaflet has been designed which outlines the risks of travelling to Syria and will be issued at ports across the country.

Whilst some youngsters want to travel to fight in the conflict, many others want to offer aid and support to the Syrian people. One of the key messages that emerged was the importance of letting people who genuinely want to help the Syrian cause know how they can do so safely and legally.

The advice is to donate to registered charities which have experience in providing humanitarian assistance in high risk, insecure and dangerous environments and have on-going relief operations in Syria and/or neighbouring countries, such as the DEC or its member charities.

The number of people travelling to Syria from the UK is judged to be in the low hundreds and information that is available shows that the number of Syria-related arrests has increased substantially in 2014. The figure for the whole of 2013 was approximately 25 yet for the first three months of 2014 alone it is approximately 40.
