My attempt at the "Smile on Saturday" theme "behind the fence".
Shot with a Schneider Kreuznach "D-Claron 40 mm F 3.5" lens on a Canon EOS R5.
My dad took us to Cirque Du Soleil on my birthday this year. Seeing the smiles and amazed faces of my children; Spending quality time with my parents; Attending an entertaining event. These memories will last longer than any item I could have received.
This holiday season I'll be trying to give experiences instead of presents. As a bonus, this means very little time squished into shopping malls.
A related recent presents conversation with my son...
Sam - "What experience are you going to give me?"
Me - "The privilege of cleaning the upstairs bathroom."
Sam - "I think I'll re-gift that one."
The photograph shows the inviting façade of a traditional Italian delicatessen in the historic center of Livorno. The shop, named “Antica Norcineria,” presents a symmetrical storefront with two arched glass doors framed in dark wood. Above them, a bold yellow sign with raised lettering stretches across the building, standing out against the pale stone wall. Striped beige awnings extend over each doorway, softening the light and adding a classic Mediterranean touch. Through the windows, cured meats and hams are visible hanging inside, immediately signaling the shop’s specialization in traditional pork products.
On both sides of the entrance, simple white banners with red lettering advertise typical Italian dishes such as roasted chicken with potatoes, lasagna al forno, and ragù di carne. A poster between the doors promotes panini con porchetta, a well-known regional sandwich made with slow-roasted pork. A bright red planter with flowers sits in the center, adding a vivid accent to the otherwise neutral façade. To the right, a parked scooter reinforces the unmistakably Italian street scene, while warm interior lighting gives the shop a welcoming, lived-in character typical of neighborhood food stores in Tuscany.

Yes, I know: I'm late with this photo but it is the only missing photo I needed to complete the challenge of the One A Week group I'm a member of: to post one photo for each week of the year. So this is my 52nd photo, taken on Christmas Day 2022!

In my photo you can see the Christmas presents I got: roses, hyacinths and a vintage Royal Doulton figurine called 'Christmas Parcels'. The snowman is a favourite Christmas decoration I've known since my childhood.
That would be at Coalca siding, just south of Oregon City, on the former SP line. If the Coast Starlights are running close to on time, this is where they'll meet. Here's the southbound, #11, casually strolling down the siding while the northbound, #14, is coming up behind me on the main. I've been out of action for a little while. I had knee surgery back in late November and everything went well. So, now my right eye has decided that it felt under appreciated, so it is acting up now. It's severely dry, hurts, and my vision is blurry. I'm taking special eyedrops for it and I also have to put an ointment in it four times a day. In the meantime, I've gotten myself a nice birthday present, a Nikkor Z lens, the 100-400 mm zoom, which I used to take this photo. I even cropped it down, too. I am so good at buying myself presents that my friends and relatives should just send me money and say "you're welcome."
Wrapping the gifts is usually, for me, a very boring activity. But this Christmas I am enjoying it a lot.

We celebrated Jasper's 4th birthday today (actual birthday is Tuesday). He knows the words "presents" and "birthday" so he was pretty excited when we told him that it was his birthday and he was getting presents. You could almost hear, see and smell all the excitement synapses firing in his brain. We're big on dog birthdays. A couple of shots of our previous Aussie Syd's birthday in the comments.
