As we in England go into a 4 week lockdown and our friends over the pond wait for the election results, wherever you live and whatever your politics, nothing will ever be the same. Good luck, stay positive and stay safe.
In the garden this morning I found three insects stationed within one cubic foot of one another: a grasshopper, a bumblebee and a two-horned treehopper. All seemed prepared to wait out the impending rain.
Thank you to everyone who visits, faves, and comments.
The Common Mergansers were calmly swimming up the Sumas River when they suddenly exploded into action. I saw a Bald Eagle fly over after.

I took this with my cellphone because I had a 500mm Prime lens on my Nikon and it wouldn't work. I asked this fisherman for permission to photograph him, he was extremely nice and cooperative. I told him he was a perfect model with all that equipment hanging off him for a trout fisherman and those sunrays and fog would be a big bonus. Not the resolution of a DSLR but I LIKE IT. I hope to see him again and give him a copy of this image. I've seen him many times before in this spot. It is worth enlarging just to see his vest of goodies, fishing net on his back, scissors near the fish and more. He was prepared and got there early ahead of the crowd.
I took this on June 29. I had a print made and gave it to him today 10/3. I had been carrying it in the car in case we saw him again. He was pleased.
The hurricane about this time last year wiped out part of this bridge when a huge old tree fell across it; it has been repaired. This island wildlife refuge is now full of piled up downed humongous old trees that fell during the hurricane. The ground was saturated before the hurricane even came and the wind took down many of the older trees.
The tours are well organized and prepared for emergencies. They have procedures to evacuate tourists for emergencies or claustrophobic anxieties. They DO NOT ALLOW tripods, monopods, or selfie sticks. They have apparently had problems with tourists.
This is an amazing place. Every turn shows a new amazing, colorful, glowing, canvas. It was easy to take lots of photos. The tough part was culling the photos when I got home.
There were 9 people (representing 4 families) and a guide in our group. The tours are a little under an hour from start to finish. We were the first of 4 or 5 groups in our time slot. The sent us in about 10 minutes apart. The guide is very informative and educational. There was some pressure to keep the group moving. The guide was helpful and took pictures of the families several times during the tour.

The Navajo name for Lower Antelope Canyon is Hasdez twazi’, which means “the spiral role arches.” Lower Antelope Canyon is about 3, 704 feet in elevation and the canyon walls are about 120 above the streambed. This canyon is more narrow to walk through, as it’s shaped like a “V”, so if you are claustrophobic this area is not for you. It goes into the slot canyon and have to maneuver thru closely on stairs, which is harder to walk through. This area is also located within the Le Chee Chapter of the Navajo Nation, near Page, Arizona.

Trees reflected in water reminded me of a Monet style.
The image was flipped to show the trees standing upright.
And it seemed that many others weren't either.
I felt particularly sorry for the bikers.

As scientists and crew with NASA’s Operation IceBridge mission prepared for a research flight on Nov. 5, 2016, the weather in Punta Arenas, Chile, was cold, wet, and windy. But when they reached their survey site in West Antarctica, skies were clear and winds were calm—a perfect day for scientists to collect data over the Getz Ice Shelf.
IceBridge, now in its eighth year, continues to build a record of how ice is responding to changes in the polar environment. The Getz Ice Shelf in West Antarctica is one area that scientists try to examine each year. “Getz is an ice shelf that has been experiencing some of the highest basal melt rates of the Antarctic ice shelves,” said Nathan Kurtz, IceBridge project scientist and a sea ice researcher at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
The image above shows a views of Getz as photographed on Nov. 5 from a NASA research airplane by Jeremy Harbeck, a sea ice scientist at NASA Goddard. The image shows ice in the process of calving from the front of the shelf, soon to become an iceberg.
Kurtz notes that the team has flown over the Getz Ice Shelf many times before. Flight paths are often exact repeats of those flown in previous years, which helps scientists understand how the height of the ice surface changes over time. This year, new flights over Getz were added to the existing observations. Scientists mapped the bathymetry (shape and depth of the seafloor) below the ice shelf, and they mapped the ice surface and bedrock upstream of the grounding line.
The flight over Getz is just one of a number of key areas flown during the IceBridge campaign. Each flight plan is prioritized in order of importance: baseline (the highest priority), high, medium, and low. The flight on Nov. 5 over Getz, for example, was categorized as “high” priority. Since the start of 2016 science flights on Oct.14, the team has flown six out of eight baseline missions, eight out of 15 high priority lines, and one medium and low priority mission each. Research flights for the season continue through Nov. 18.
“We are in pretty good shape so far, having flown so many missions due to a combination of favorable weather, no major airplane issues, and all instruments operating well,” Kurtz said. “We’re about four weeks into the campaign, and it’s possible we could tie the record of most flights flown with Operation IceBridge if things continue to go well.”
