I prefer the Singapore Botanic Gardens, but the Gardens by the Bay are fascinating in their own right. For one, the architecture and lay-out of the place are fantastic; also - though in fact more of an amusement park than a 'real' botanical garden - its large area allows for wonderful walks, even hikes. Everything is kept in tiptop shape and it's a pleasure to be here.
This is a view from the top of one of the man made Supertree Constructions in the eponymous Grove. You can see the two enormous conservatories: on the left the Flower Dome (which has among many other things a Malagasy Forest) and on the right the Cloud Forest (which contains a true, high waterfall). All the displays are tended lovingly. In the Flower Dome I was lucky to talk to some very knowledgeable and friendly Orchid tenders. Jia Hui even went out of her way to show me some of 'her' prized Masdevallias... So I could easily have stayed longer, but I wanted also to go to a museum display in the city centre on British Colonial History, 'Artist and Empire'. That's what I get for staying here only a day-and-a-half.
One week ago, Super Bowl Sunday, W9 drove us to a park near the Los Angeles Zoo. A Summer Tanager sighting had been reported.
In LA you gauge distances by time. Not by miles. Then factor in things like "Rush Hour" (ha ha. Rush Hour is any day any time) and if Dodger Stadium has a game and the typical ….stalled cars, a mattress in the fast lane, stuff like that. The park was not close but do-able.
Gratefully we've had some rain. The ground was soggy. My well-worn boots had so many holes in the sole and I put off the decision to repair them or toss them. But not the decision to wear them one more time.
We were there to get the rare tanager.
W9 walks over to me and says look at my shoes. And I do. They look really wet. And I glance at my tired trusty boots. They are soaked but I don't feel the wet and cold just yet, but I will. And soon. We continue to stomp around fighting the urge to complain about the wet and cold like the weasels we are but “man up” when we find another birder who has been sitting patiently scanning the trees with her binoculars (BTW which abbreviation do you prefer? Bins or Binocs?). She is blond and wears a red jacket. I am sure if she had a dog I could tell you his/her name and how old they are and what their favorite toy is... but her name escapes me.
Today we tried again. W9 and I had new waterproof footwear on. We had better light and new energy. We struck up a quick bond with Amir, also looking for the colorful rare bird. Marylou and daughter Emma joined us. And the blond in red was there too. I saw her pointing and gesturing to Amir who had his camera raised and ready. She is the reason I am posting this photo today. She didn't have a camera but said she could look at ebird postings and find the photo or the link to the photo we post. And then she could show her friends this beautiful, incredible, and rare visitor.
I couldn't let her down.

When it comes to White Stuff I prefer the New Mexico version to Norway’s. For one thing you need to wear a lot less clothing. Seriously it’s nearly the end of the year and I thought a few highlights of 2016 might be in order. The white sands national monument has got to be one of the strangest places I have ever visited you can the impression in the middle of these huge dunes that somehow you have been transported to another planet. I took a lot of photographs that will emerge in time but here is one for now.
A bit of info about White Sands
The White Sands National Monument is located about 16 miles southwest of Alamogordo in western Otero County and northeastern Doña Ana County in the state of New Mexico, at an elevation of 4,235 feet . The area is in the mountain-ringed Tularosa Basin and comprises the southern part of a 275 square miles field of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals. It is the largest gypsum dune field in the world.
Gypsum is rarely found in the form of sand because it is water-soluble. Normally, rain would dissolve the gypsum and carry it to the sea. The Tularosa Basin is enclosed; meaning that it has no outlet to the sea and that rain that dissolves gypsum from the surrounding San Andres and Sacramento Mountains is trapped within the basin. Thus water either sinks into the ground or forms shallow pools, which subsequently dry out and leave gypsum in a crystalline form, called selenite, on the surface.

I know it's the month of mushy love stuff, but I don't do mushy love stuff, but as long as there is black & gray options, I am good to go.. Wraith has this cute dress at Cupid's Fault . Now if you prefer the mushy love stuff you can opt for those prints and colors. There are lots to choose from. I really liked the heathered gray option in the cottons hud. I paried the dress with Delta's new stompers at WASTELAND and to bump up the crazy factor No.Match's release from FaMESHed was the finishing touch!... I have a full list of detail and links below

View from Weissfluh summit (2,843 m), which can be reached by the Parsenn Funicular and cable car from Davos (Grisons/Graubünden). If you prefer, you can also hike up there, no problem.
Many thanks for your visits / comments / faves!
Joey's preferred spot to sleep is now the living room's sofa. I guess it's the months of indoor confinement which made him choose the antique sofa instead of random places in the house.
It was kind of hard to get him to look directly into the lens. He's learned that he doesn't like the flash photography although it's been many years since I used fill-in flash.
I usually prefer to take photos in daylight but I like the way the centre of these flowers show up in artificial light.
With heartfelt thanks to my flickr friends who have so consistently commented or favoured my photos and shared theirs through the year.

"Segnava le parole preferite nel suo quadernetto da tasca. Era arrivato a collezionarne a migliaia, ogni tanto ne rileggeva una a caso e si stupiva di come una parola che magari anni prima aveva un suono armonioso, a distanza di tempo non lo consolasse o non lo divertisse più, come se quella segnaletica personale indicasse che qualcosa in lui si era trasformato ..." - Fotografare le parole su Polaroiders.

It's midnight at the vegetable patch, and Brian looks like he could be getting himself into a bit of trouble...
I hasten to point out that I do not own any slug pellets (I prefer to make use of a relocation technique) - these were borrowed from a neighbour who's love for snails in no way matches mine.
For Macro Mondays theme 'Hazard'.
The old blue-coloured slug pellets, made using metaldehyde, have been illegal to use since April 2020 due to their serious risk to birds and mammals such as pets and hedgehogs. The pellets shown contain 1% ferric phosphate, the other 99% is a cereal 'filler' that the snails love to eat. When the snails ingest these, they become poisoned by the iron they contain - this results in damage to their digestive systems and the snails die slowly over several days - must be unpleasant! These pellets would need to be ingested in excess in order to be toxic, but the label on the bottle gives all the usual safety warnings about using pesticides (AVOID ALL CONTACT BY MOUTH AND KEEP OFF SKIN. DO NOT BREATHE DUST. WASH HANDS AFTER USE. KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN AND PETS, etc.)
Despite the fact that my bok choi plants are clearly being enjoyed by snails (they were caught in the act), I would never use pellets.
No snails were harmed in the making of this photograph.
Here's another little songbird - a species that shows up in my area each spring, presumably on their way to locations with an abundance of trees. Least Flycatchers prefer deciduous forests, and breed in the aspen parklands of central Alberta and Saskatchewan (as well as Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Canada's eastern provinces and some northern states.
They can be shy, or surprisingly approachable. This one accepted my presence, on foot, in its territory, among the trees in a friend's one-acre backyard at the edge of town. It was doing very well that day, flying off its branch to catch insects in mid-air, usually returning to the same perch.
This is an older shot, made with my first D800, Nikon's early entry in the medium format sensor sweepstakes that finally put superior image quality in the hands of us DSLR shooters. That was a game changing camera. The lens was a big, heavy clunker that required a bean bag or tripod, depending on the situation, especially when coupled with a 1.7x teleconverter, which I used for this shot. Nikon listed the lens as incompatible with this tc, but I had pretty good results with the combination. Since then, of course, sensors have gotten bigger, and lenses more compact, making hand holding the norm. When I use the tripod now, it's usually for macro or landscape work when I don't want to sacrifice quality by boosting the ISO too high.

I sometimes have a bit of a sweet tooth but mostly I prefer savoury. So this freshly popped pop corn got a nice sprinkling of salt. Yum!
The Spangled Drongo is noisy and conspicuous, usually active, and frequently aggressive to other species. Spangled Drongos are found throughout northern and eastern Australia.
Spangled Drongos prefer wet forests, but can also be found in other woodlands, mangroves and parks.
Insects are taken from foliage and from under bark; fruit and nectar also form part of its diet.
Photographed Maleny, Queensland, Australia.

I prefer the roads less traveled. The non-existent ones that don't appear on GPS. The ones easily missed on the side of the road.
I also love the lone trees that have defied the odds and survived in near uninhabitable conditions.
And the storm, that rolls across the empty barren expanse each and every year on the eastern plains of Colorado.

Ghent is such an awesome city, I even prefer it to Bruges. Many tourists go to Bruges, and leave Ghent to their side, such a mistake. If you want to visit Belgium, don't forget Ghent.

Found local but rare in Ireland with wetlands being its preferred habitat. Weevils are one of the largest family of insects in the world with over 40,000 known species. Most species are plant eaters with many species also being wingless.
The British population of Short-eared Owl is boosted in winter by a large influx from Scandinavia and Russia. The breeding population is much smaller and is largely dependent on Short-tailed Field Voles whose numbers fluctuate widely, and the Short-eared Owl population follows the voles' boom and bust cycles. So population estimates range from 2140 breeding pairs in a good year, down to just 610 pairs in a poor vole year. They nest mainly on northern moorlands, including the Peak District where I photographed this one. The deep heather in the background is quite typical of the nesting habitat though they prefer grassy moorland for hunting.
Before all that storm debris cluttered the top of this waterfall, the water used to pour over the rock top left and fan out in the shape of a whale's tail. It's still an impressive sight but I think that I prefer it the way it was.

Water rail
Scientific name: Rallus aquaticus
From grunts and groans, to 'purring' and 'piglet squealing', the water rail is more often heard than it is seen! This shy bird lives in reedbeds and wetlands, hiding among the vegetation.
Did you know?
Water rails are not often seen in flight as they prefer to migrate under the cover of darkness.

In this shot, I focus stacked four images to create sharpness through to the fourth frame. The lighting is slightly different from the shot of the prior evening which was taken with a secondhand tilt-shift lens.
Interested in your comments about which is preferred.
