The fly agaric is a mycorrhizal fungus, so it forms a symbiosis with trees. Preferred symbiosis partners are spruce and birch. The tree receives minerals and water from the fungus, in return the tree supplies the fungus with energy in the form of sugar. An ectomycorrhiza is formed.

I actually prefer this picture over the first.

Unlike any other elfin, the Eastern Pine Elfin with its bold pattern of brown and white stripes that resembles a pine cone, is the only butterfly species that uses pines as the larval host plant, preferring the hard pines such as the Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda) or the Virginia Pine (Pinus virginiana).

As with other elfins, this butterfly is univoltine producing only one adult generation per year and flying only for a short time in early spring. Both the larvae and the adults are smartly colored to mimic the host plant to evade predators.

Right now, in the dead of winter, this species is a very small pupa trying to survive the harsh winter conditions. The adults will emerge sometime in spring.

I normally prefer a faster shutter speed, but here I slowed it down to get a sense of motion in the wings. It was a beautiful night of autumn light on the mother loon from my Yak.

The horned sungem (Heliactin bilophus) is a species of hummingbird native to much of central Brazil and parts of Bolivia and Suriname. It prefers open habitats such as savanna and grassland and readily occupies human-created habitats such as gardens. It recently expanded its range into southern Amazonas and Espírito Santo, probably as a result of deforestation; few other hummingbird species have recently expanded their range. The horned sungem is a small hummingbird with a long tail and a comparatively short, black bill. The sexes differ markedly in appearance, with males sporting two feather tufts ("horns") above the eyes that are shiny red, golden, and green. Males also have a shiny blue head crest and a black throat with a pointed "beard". The female is plainer and has a brown or yellow-buff throat. It is the only species within its genus, Heliactin.

The horned sungem is a nomadic species, moving between areas in response to the seasonal flowering of the plants on which it feeds. It relies on a broad variety of flowering plants for nectar. If the shape of the flower is incompatible with the bird's comparatively short bill, it may rob the nectar through a little hole at the base of the flower. The sungem does also consume small insects. The species is currently classified as least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horned_sungem

My psyche prefers a set of three connected /3 similar photographs in a sequence whenever possible but just one a day to be fair to anyone liking something to comment on. So here is bird number 3 taken in roughly the same area as the previous two. I am afraid I shall be slow to leave comments because I am home after 4 hours extensive testing of my eyes at the Neuro -Ophthalmic surgery at my local hospital.

Still no closer to finding out the cause of my problem despite scans, pressure testing, examinations of both eyes x 2

All of this today....

Only to be referred to the Glaucoma clinic... this after the first test was for Glaucoma and where I was told I didn't have signs of Glaucoma. I googled my symptoms on reaching home, which at the beginning of this eye problem starting over a year ago suggested to me 'night blindness ' my Optician then an Ophthalmologist both said I don't have this condition but my symptoms are exactly that...I had been looking at American sites because the NHS in the UK don't appear to recognise it as an actual real 'thing' if anyone I follow suffers from this I would be interested in what treatment is available.. the suggestion the consultant thought possible being removal of the tiny early cataracts and drops for Glaucoma ?????

some prefer the sunlight shinning on the farmhouse as it rises but I more like this soft colours & lights. I like the curve in the grass that matches the clouds in the sky.

** I prefer not to have parts of the bird feeder in a shot but in this case I happily make an exception. Back in the summer of 2018 a pair of bullfinches established themselves in our garden for about two weeks . We have lived in this house 30 years and it's the only time they have appeared. I have only seen a bullfinch in the countryside a couple of times and at a distance. This shot was taken through a glass window and at a pretty high ISO

I usually prefer simple 5-petal roses, but this many-petaled rose stood out from all the roses I saw that day. Great color and at the perfect stage of opening. Seen in the Rose Garden at the Los Angeles County Arboretum. Sadly I do not the know the iD or I would plant one in my backyard LOL !

2 of 25 Days of Christmas

We are getting blasted with a winter storm here. We already have over 5 inches of snow within a couple hours. It is beautiful but also very dangerous. I thought what befitting the perfect 2nd day of my 25 Days of Christmas

For Macro Mondays theme 'Pair'.

I generally prefer to tell a photographic story with Brian, in the context of his surroundings, but for this task (as 'Eyes' were specifically mentioned in the theme description) I wanted to get as close as possible to just Brian's eyes/eye stalks.

I made use of a small plastic ruler to act as a 'platform' for Brian. As snails are naturally curious about their surroundings, I placed him on the platform in the back light of the conservatory window, hoping he would stretch his neck and eye stalks down as this would give me the best shot at getting just his eyes. Attempts using my Raynox DCR-250 macro attachment proved to get too close, and with far too shallow a depth of field, so I had to go in as close as possible with only my macro lens. Brian moved surprisingly quickly, so I was lucky to capture both eye stalks in the frame and in good focus - this took a fair number of attempts!

There was no need to check the measurement of the photo to make sure it was within the the MM size limit - I would estimate the distance between the eyes as approximately 2cm, so this would qualify as a 'true' macro and only a slight crop was done to get symmetry of the eye stalks in the frame.

Those of you that find snails to be disgusting, slimy creatures will not care for this photo! But I have come to appreciate their behaviour, comic character and (yes!) grace and beauty. I am apparently in good company with the novelist Patricia Highsmith who bred hundreds of snails in her garden and famously took a handbag to a party filled with lettuce and snails.

No snails were harmed in the making of this photograph.

One of the best things I like about Oregon is how unassuming some of the most stunning locations are. The first time we visited Oregon, we spend a couple of days in Bend but completely missed the stunning Sparks lake. On our second visit, luckily I saw a billboard for Oregon tourism with sparks lake as the main attraction but in true Oregon fashion, they didn't name the location. Thankfully my google tracking skills were on point and I managed to find this lovely location and we spend a brilliant sunrise there.

This happened with Abiqua Falls as well and we in fact turned back about a mile away from one of the most famous waterfalls in the state because we couldn't figure out the turn to the parking lot. Yup, there was not a single sign, I figured it out a year later and returned to get my pics and was kicking myself for turning around while I was so close. While it was frustrating at the moment, as I look back I really appreciate how these spots still maintain their wildness by not being tourist traps.

Well today we are at my favourite beach in Sydney town.

It is only about 35 minutes drive from the city. It is one of Sydney's northern beaches.

And it is another world, so different to the hustle & bustle of Bondi Beach. I prefer Palm Beach to Bondi, though Palm Beach can become very crowded on the weekends.

I especially like Palm Beach because it is a slice of wilderness so close to the heart of Sydney.

You can climb the headland on a forest-fringed trail and then sit on top of the world - and take photos looking back across all of Palm Beach.

Your opinion, which do you prefer? Unfortunately, I like them both.

I am a huge fan of Snoopy. This Snoopy was given to me on Valentines Day from my loving husband who also has a sense of humor. As another joke, he and my friend thinks Snoopy needs to wake with a Mountain Dew. Whatever happened to coffee?
