A Twitter account publishes on a daily basis the titles of potential artworks of the future as news headlines. It functions by virtue of a programme that combines the headlines of articles recently published on websites specializing in digital art and hactivism (i.e. the Creators Project, Wired, Motherboard, Neural...). This delicate bot randomly generates permutations ad infinitum. It effortlessly predicts an infinite number of likely, possible, almost- existent or even nonsensical proposals all of which are in line with the jargon currently in use. In this absurd manner, the Predictive Art Bot works towards the generation of an exhaustive series of all the possible automatic artistic responses and trends that may arise in the near future. This algorithm’s constant production of “reflex art” that takes the form of simple utterances means that it, in turn, continually induces mental projections generated by this stimulus.
Professor of Engineering Hélène Seroussi and Professor of Earth Sciences Mathieu Morlighem share a $1 million grant from Denmark's Novo Nordisk Foundation to study sea-level rise. The project—part of a larger effort led by Technical University of Denmark—aims not only to improve projections of sea level rise but also to establish a "Center for Ice-sheet and Sea-level Predictions."

As predicted a color challenge that involves green is much more challenging when the outside is all snowy.
I did notice on a walk outside (with much slip sliding where the sidewalk is all ice) that my daughter's coat and snow pant ensemble fit the bill for green and black!

Junto a las pocas colaboraciones (pero las que hay, de gran nivel lírico), el dúo de raperos villalemaninos instala en cada track su compleja visión de la realidad, navegando entre el rap clásico y el trap, además de mostrarnos su nivel de versatilidad, adaptándose sin problemas a cada emoción que piden los ritmos de Roche.
Predicto nos entrega la crudeza de lo cotidiano en su flow y en sus escritos. Los paisajes y escenas que describe en sus rimas nos transportan directamente a donde él quiere que vayamos. En cada tema nos muestra un poco de la tormenta mental en la que reside su rap. Con punchlines impredecibles nos mantiene atento a qué es lo que va a decir en cada track del EP.
Chalo Contreras nos entrega a lo largo del disco un mensaje de trascendencia, madurez y realidad. Con un flow tan elegante como las instrumentales, va dándonos gotas de sabiduría. Entre el vasto ambiente de música banal que nos rodea constantemente, se agradece de sobremanera el poder escuchar este tipo de enfoques más serios, pero sin perder el estilo.

Advanced Alloys Signature Center
NETL’s metallurgists and materials scientists are responsible for developing affordable, high-performance alloys to enable numerous energy and industrial applications. This includes alloys with increased temperature capabilities that can enable highly efficient advanced energy systems, alloys for aerospace and defense applications, and a world leading biomedical alloy for coronary stents through a cost reimbursement agreement with an industrial partner. NETL utilizes an integrated computational materials engineering approach, which combines computational and experimental methods for translating materials science concepts into practical technologies. Key to this strategy are targeted experiments that evaluate performance in realistic service conditions and demonstrate manufacturing at scales and by methods that readily translate to industrial practice. NETL conducts research into a wide range of alloys including aluminum, high-conductivity copper, steels, superalloys, refractory alloys, and high-entropy alloys. NETL’s alloy development capability is anchored by its substantial ingot metallurgy manufacturing facilities (vacuum induction melting, vacuum arc remelting, and electro-slag remelting capabilities) that are unique within the national laboratory complex and the nation. Current research is focusing on affordable alloys and materials with improved resistance to hydrogen to enhance the safety, reliability and resiliency of hydrogen production from carbonaceous sources with carbon capture, transport in pipelines, and large-scale storage, as well as the utilization of hydrogen for power generation.
Materials Performance: Corrosion & Oxidation, Hydrogen Resistance
Corrosion, oxidation and hydrogen embrittlement have caused catastrophic failures of metallic components in many applications. Understanding a material’s response to environmental factors is critical for improving the reliability of systems and developing new corrosion resistant alloys and corrosion protection strategies. The Corrosion and Electrochemistry Lab (CEL) and related facilities are used to quantify and understand materials degradation in extreme service conditions. CEL has electronic potentiostats/galvanostatsmeters for conducting electrochemical experiments to measure corrosion rates using different electrochemical methods, for predicting susceptibility to pitting corrosion by determining pitting potential, and for determining conditions for corrosion protection. NETL also has test beds for assessing corrosion and oxidation at elevated temperatures and pressures. Current research focuses on materials performance in hydrogen environments; hydrogen-containing fuels and hydrogen combustion products; assessing materials, coatings and liners; and electrochemical sensor performance for applications in natural gas, hydrogen and CO2 pipelines.
Materials Performance: Mechanical Behavior
Scientists and engineers utilize the Mechanical Testing Laboratory to determine the mechanical behavior and performance of advanced materials under temperatures and pressures commonly associated with fossil energy systems. The focus of this work is to develop novel materials with enhanced performance characteristics. The laboratory is equipped to test a material’s ability to withstand cyclical mechanical loads for many cycles and resulting crack growth behavior of materials at temperatures up to 1200° C. The laboratory has the capability to evaluate a material’s ability to withstand mechanical loads for long periods of time at temperatures up to 1100 °C. Additionally, the lab can test a material’s compressive and tensile strength—the resistance to breaking under tension—from room temperature to 1200 °C, as well as impact testing and hot-hardness testing.

Tide Prediction Machines (TPMs) were analogue computers (LEGO Machine) which provided an accurate and efficient means of predicting the ocean tide. The TPM was invented in the late 19th century, but most of them were made in the first half of the 20th century, up until the time that the advent of digital computers consigned them to museums.

One could undertake such a tedious arithmetic computation oneself, by calculating the height of the tide every hour during the year and by plotting the resulting time series. However, it was Lord Kelvin's realisation that TPMs could provide a means for undertaking such a task more efficiently, their accuracy being limited only by the number of constituents included in their design.
If one knows the amplitudes and phases of each constituent at a point on the cost (“the harmonic constants), then it is possible to compute the tide at that position for any time, either by considerable arithmetic or with the use of a TPM.
Each TPM had its own architecture. However, there were several features common to almost all of them. First a TPM had to have a driving mechanism to provide a circular motion with an angular frequency corresponding to that of a tidal constituent. Second, a TPM required a mechanism for converting that circular motion into sinusoidal motion and third it had to sum the individual sinusoidal motions to derive an overall sum.

The pulley wheel itself is allowed to move up and down in a vertical direction only. Therefore, its elevation will vary by the distance of the pin from the centre or the amplitude of the constituent.
The pully wheels have the following properties (from left to right):
• K1 (lunar) - amplitude: 0.61 studs; frequency: 24h: phase lag: 54 degree
• O1 (lunar) - amplitude: 0.39 studs; frequency: 24h; phase lag: 144 degree
• M2 (lunar) - amplitude: 1.25 studs; frequency: 12;. phase lag: 126 degree
• S2 (solar) - amplitude: 0.75 studs; frequency: 12h; phase lag: 0 degree
Then, as the crank rotates, the pulley wheel will rise and fall, thereby simulating the variation in water level due to that constituent. Four of such units can be geared to the main shaft so that the individual speeds are proportional to those of the four constituents. All motions are summed by using a continuous band. The band is fixed at one end and wraps around the four pulley wheels. At its other end it has a pointer which plots the height of the tide on the rotating cylinder.
