Today I attended the first day of the Predict Conference 2015 at the RDS. I will not be able to attend tomorrow but I hope to return on Thursday.

The on-going conference Conference (organised by industry-leader Creme Global) is an interactive meeting. It will, over three days, feature leading international thinkers in the areas of Data, Predictive Models, Technology and Decision making. At the meeting, we will be discussing the latest progress in Predictive Modelling and its future - from Data to Software and Hardware technology, plus Predictive Modelling methods and the best examples of Data-driven Decision-making.

Talks from leading entrepreneurs, data scientists, technologists, investors, and decision-makers (from business and government) will include case-studies and hands-on workshops. This conference has a focus on Data and Predictive Modelling technology like no other.

The National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina (NUBBiH) (Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian: Nacionalna i univerzitetska biblioteka Bosne i Hercegovine) is the national library of Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in the city of Sarajevo.

It was designed in 1891 by the Czech architect Karel Pařík, but criticisms by the minister, Baron Benjamin Kallay, caused him to stop working on the project. It was initially the largest and most representative building of the Austro-Hungarian period in Sarajevo and served as the city hall.

The library was reopened on the May 9, 2014.

Alexander Wittek, who worked on the project in 1892 and 1893, fell ill and died in 1894 in Graz, and the work was completed by Ćiril Iveković. The edifice was built in a stylistic blend of historical eclecticism, predominantly in the pseudo-Moorish expression, for which the stylistic sources were found in the Islamic art of Spain and North Africa.

Building works began in 1892 and were completed in 1894, at a cost of 984,000 crowns, with 32,000 crowns provided for fixtures and fittings. It was formally opened 20 April 1896, and handed over to the City Authority, which occupied the property until 1949, when it was handed over to the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

On 25 August 1992, Serbian shelling during the Siege of Sarajevo caused the complete destruction of the library; among the losses were about 700 manuscripts and incunabula and a unique collection of Bosnian serial publications, some from the middle of the 19th century Bosnian cultural revival.

Before the attack, the library held 1.5 million volumes and over 155,000 rare books and manuscripts.

Some citizens and librarians tried to save some books while they were under sniper fire, at least one person died.

The majority of the books could not be saved from the flames. The structural repair of the building was planned to be carried out in four stages: 1996-1997 (financed by a donation from Republic of Austria), and 2000-2004 (financed by a donation from the European Commission), and the city of Barcelona among others. The third stage ended in September 2012, with an estimated cost of KM 4.6 million (about €2.37 million) and will return the city hall to its former grace. The fourth stage began following the completion of the third stage and lasted about 20 months, finishing at the end of 2013 and cost of KM 14 million (about €7.23 million) which are secured through the IPA. In this stage the whole interior was built and reconstructed (paintings, sculptures, books), meaning the building is brought back to function. Everything that was possible to restore has been done so, while those things that were not possible to save have been made anew through special molds. The whole reconstruction and restore process was predicted to cost about KM 25 million (about €13 million).

After it is repaired, the building, now a national monument, will be used for variety of events. The national and university library of Bosnia and Herzegovina will be placed in it, as well will be the City Council session hall. Its space will be also used for various protocol events for all levels of government, concerts and exhibitions.

After the years of restoration, the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina was re-opened on May 9, 2014 with the performance of Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra and Vedran Smailović.

This is straight out of Woo Woo land...

I was in college on a Geography Club field trip somewhere in Maine in 1957, when our group came upon this bit of graffiti. I (Roger) had a female friend who I called Sam (later softened to Sammy). We were classmates but were definitely not "an item," had never gone out on a date together, and in fact, at that time, Sam thought of me more as a pest than a friend. Obviously, the creator of this graffiti had someone other than us in mind, but all the guys and gals on that field trip decided he was psychic and that my destiny had been sealed. Turns out he was right... Poor Sam was very upset that I had taken this photo and shown it to fellow classmates. The thought of us in any kind of a "relationship" was downright repulsive to her, and she didn't find this in the least bit funny and certainly not even remotely predictive of the future.

We were married three years later...

For images and stories of this nature, I have put together a set called Our Life Story depicting our life together over the past half century and containing over 180 images and descriptions which, for the most part, are in chronological order. Check it out and tell me what you think of it. Here's a sample page of a loose leaf book I've put together using the images and descriptions included in this set.

Talk about strange ~ I was in college on a Geography Club field trip somewhere in Maine in 1957, when our group came upon this bit of graffiti and gleefully pointed it out to me. I (Roger) had a female friend whom I called Sam (later softened to Sammy). We were classmates but were definitely not "an item," had never gone out on a date together, and in fact, at that time, Sam thought of me as a bit of a pest (to say the least...). Turns out he was right...

Poor Sam was very upset that I had taken this photo and shown it to our fellow classmates - and I mean very upset -. Even the suggestion of us being in any kind of a "relationship" was downright repulsive to her, and she didn't find this in the least bit funny and certainly not even remotely predictive of the future.

I first posted this a few years ago, but I decided to run it by again so that, after a little bit of tweaking, I'd have something for the Fenced Friday Group.

Project Description:

In 2005, FAS helped a European client predict who might be invited to join a governmental advisory board being formed to re-shape policies within a certain industry. FAS analyzed publicly available data about political functions and professional interactions of influencers in this industry. Our method proved remarkably accurate.

Legend:

The nodes represent individuals. The more influential and central an individual is, the larger the node. If two people serve on the same board or committee, then there is a line between them. The more boards they serve on together, the thicker the line. The yellow lines and nodes indicates the political space. The red lines and nodes indicates the professional space. Orange is a combination of both.

Sad but this is my feeling. Too bad the powers that be do not have the backbone to make the changes that can make this country better.

They know what to do but won't get reelected if they do it.

We need a true American hero to stand up and make it happen. That person is not on the radar yet and would be unelectable anyway...

U.K.’s Boris Johnson Predicts Difficult Winter as Covid Deaths Rise

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson predicted a difficult winter due to coronavirus and other pressures on the National Health Service, as his government acknowledged worsening data in its pandemic response.

“We’re starting to see indications that hospitalizations and death rates are increasing,” Johnson’s official spokesman Max Blain told reporters Tuesday. “Clearly we are keeping a very close eye on rising case rates.”

The U.K. reported a further 223 deaths within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Tuesday, the highest figure since March. Some 921 people were admitted to hospitals with coronavirus last Friday; that number has been creeping up since the end of September.

However, despite warning of tough times ahead, Johnson said current measures are keeping the virus “under control,” according to a readout of his cabinet meeting with ministers issued by 10 Downing Street.

There are no plans at the moment to bring in “Plan B,” which could include compulsory face masks and advice to work from home, which Johnson warned last month might be needed if a surge in cases threatened to overwhelm the NHS.

Covid Surges in U.K. Schools After Lag in Shots for Children

Weekly deaths from coronavirus have topped 800 for each of the past six weeks in Britain, which is higher than in other major western European nations, according to Bloomberg’s coronavirus tracker. To date, the U.K. has recorded almost 140,000 Covid-related fatalities.

The U.K. has seen a recent surge in cases, reporting its highest daily jump since mid-July on Sunday. It is facing calls for urgent research into a mutation of the delta variant present in Britain, known as delta plus.

Still, hospitalizations are currently at about 20% of the levels seen during the previous peak in the U.K. and deaths at about 10%, which Blain attributed to the effects of the vaccine rollout.

Blain told reporters that the government would only consider bringing in “Plan B” if there was a significant risk of the NHS being overwhelmed.

“We are not at that point because of the vaccination program,” he said.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said Tuesday that the government will shortly set out a detailed program for how it will deal with winter pressures on the NHS.

“Usually winters are tough for the NHS, but I think this winter will be particularly tough,” Javid said in the House of Commons.

The UK has one of the highest Covid infection rates in the world right now: Here's why

■ When the Covid-19 pandemic swept the globe in 2020, the U.K. was hit hard, reporting some of the highest cases numbers and fatalities in Europe.

■ The U.K.'s speedy vaccination rollout was widely praised and helped to bring cases under control.

■ Now the situation is looking dramatically different, with the country recording close to 50,000 new Covid cases a day — giving it one of the worst daily infection rates in the world.

LONDON — When the Covid-19 pandemic swept the globe in 2020, the U.K. was hit hard, reporting some of the highest cases numbers and fatalities in Europe. A speedy vaccination program managed to turn things around, however, and brought cases under control.

Now the situation looks dramatically different. The country is recording close to 50,000 new Covid cases a day — meaning it has one of the worst daily infection rates in the world.

On Monday, 49,156 new cases were recorded, marking the highest number in three months and taking the total number of cases to over 8.4 million in the U.K. The country also reported 45 new deaths within 28 days of a positive test, bringing the total number of fatalities to 138,629 — one of the highest death tolls in the world.

Meanwhile, hospitalizations and deaths have been steadily increasing since the summer when Covid restrictions in England were lifted on July 19. Pubs, restaurants and nightclubs reopened and mask-wearing became (for the most part) voluntary.

Thankfully, the numbers of hospitalizations and deaths have been rising at a much slower rate than earlier in the pandemic, largely due to Covid vaccines being highly effective at preventing severe infection, hospitalization and deaths.

Nonetheless, healthcare professionals in the country's National Health Service are warning of a tough winter ahead.

What's going on?

Experts say there are a variety of reasons for the U.K.'s steep Covid numbers — ranging from the half-hearted mask adoption (even when masks are required, such as on public transport, the rule is rarely enforced) to large indoor gatherings that have allowed the virus to spread.

The U.K.'s hesitation in vaccinating younger teenagers, something that other countries in Europe and the U.S. did much earlier, and the return to schools in September, have also been cited as reasons for the sharp rise in cases, although the boom in infections among 0-18 year olds is now ebbing as infections rise in their parents' generation, data shows.

Perhaps most ironically, the U.K.'s early vaccination rollout — which began in December 2020 and was one of the first in the world — is also seen as contributing to its high case rate now.

That's because we now know — due to an increasing body of data — that immunity in vaccinated people wanes after about six months. The spread of the much more infectious delta Covid variant in the spring and summer is also seen as a factor that has diminished vaccine efficacy.

Dr. Eric Topol, founder and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, tweeted his assessment of the U.K.'s situation on Saturday, stating: "Why does the UK currently have 6-fold hospital admissions and a 3-fold higher death rate compared with Europe? Among [the] possible explanations, two that stand out are less use of mitigation measures and less vaccination of kids, age 12-17."

He noted that reliance on the AstraZeneca vaccine (where effectiveness has been found to decline slightly more over time than the Pfizer vaccine) as another possible contributing factor.

While, "another potential explanation is that the U.K. vaccinated earlier than rest of Europe, and therefore has manifest more waning of protection, especially among older people," he noted. On a more positive note, Topol noted that "the U.K. has done far better than the U.S. for uncoupling cases from hospitalizations and deaths."

In light of what we know about waning immunity, the U.K. (like Israel, the U.S. and other countries in Europe) decided in September to roll out booster shots to the over-50s, medical staff and anyone with underlying health conditions.

Those who received their second dose at least six months ago are being asked to come forward first. Currently around 6.5 million people in England are eligible for a booster, with the NHS so far having administered around 3.6 million booster shots, data shows.

Experts have called on the government to ramp up vaccinations in unvaccinated groups, mainly in young people, and to roll out boosters faster. They have also warned against complacency this winter or a reliance on a controversial "herd immunity" strategy.

"The U.K. seems to be slowly waking up to the fact that Covid cases are too high, but the reality is they've been soaring for months and many countries have put us on their red list," Tim Spector, a professor of genetic epidemiology at King's College London and lead scientist on the ZOE COVID Study app, which collects and analyses Covid data, noted last week.

"Infections remain high in young people, and look to be spilling over into the 35-55 year olds. If these increases creep into the over 55s it could spell disaster for the NHS this winter," he noted. "With cases so high, it's clear that herd immunity isn't happening, and the risk is most people continue to believe they are safe if they have had Covid or a vaccine ... We need to be doing all we can to get everyone double vaccinated and stop waiting for herd immunity to happen through natural infection."

Variant worries

There are also growing concerns about a descendent of the delta Covid variant that is being identified in an increasing number of U.K. Covid cases, with some suggesting it could be another possible factor in rising case numbers.

Last Friday, the U.K.'s Health Security Agency issued a report in which it said "a delta sublineage newly designated as AY.4.2 is noted to be expanding in England" and that it was monitoring the subtype.

"This sublineage is currently increasing in frequency. It includes spike mutations A222V and Y145H. In the week beginning 27 September 2021 (the last week with complete sequencing data), this sublineage accounted for approximately 6% of all sequences generated, on an increasing trajectory. This estimate may be imprecise ... Further assessment is underway," it noted.

Former U.S. Food and Drug Administration commissioner Scott Gottlieb also tweeted about the subtype at the weekend.

"U.K. reported its biggest one-day Covid case increase in 3 months just as the new delta variant AY.4 with the S:Y145H mutation in the spike reaches 8% of UK sequenced cases," Dr. Gottlieb wrote. "We need urgent research to figure out if this delta plus is more transmissible, has partial immune evasion?"

The delta subtype, known formally as AY.4.2, is reported to be 10-15% more transmissible than the standard delta variant, but it is too early to say for certain whether it has been causing a spike in cases in the U.K.

Professor of immunology at Imperial College London, Danny Altmann, told CNBC on Monday that the subtype "needs to be monitored and, so far as possible, carefully controlled."

"Because delta has now been the dominant mutant in several regions for some six months and not been displaced by any other variants, the hope has been that delta perhaps represented [the] peak mutation performance achievable by the virus. AY.4 may be starting to raise doubts about this assertion," he warned.

The U.K. has often been seen as a harbinger of things to come for other countries during the pandemic, give the fact that the alpha variant was first discovered in Britain; it then became a dominant strain of the virus globally.

The same thing subsequently happened with the even more infectious delta variant, which was first found in India but then took hold in the U.K. before spreading around the world.

On this day, heavy rains were predicted to begin and last through the next. The clouds were heavy and we used our rain ponchos off and on because of sprinkles. Later, during the evening and night there were flash floods in the park, but only nice sounding rain to us after so long without rain. It was the result of what they call Monsoon patterns mixed with the remnants of a hurricane in the Pacific. Locals said they almost never see rain at this time of year. It rained through much of the night and into the next afternoon.

We chose to stay an extra night in the Peak District, as the forecast for the next day wasn't good so we'd prefer to be moving on during the predicted rain. Instead, we went on the train to Hathersage, the next village. There we made use of the heated open-air swiming pool (although the 27ºC didn't seem warmer than my usual indoor pool at 18º), after which we had an all-day breakfast for lunch!

With 2018 predicted to be a marked upturn in the fortunes of the Matchbox brand hopefully we won't witness the constant tinkering and modifying of existing castings which we've seen in recent years all in the name of trying to keep them at the magical one Dollar price point. The poor Land-Rover Defender 110 casting has had its fair share of cheapening with the last round of chopping involving reducing the height of the roof and full integration of its roof and cargo with the glazing. It just about manages to maintain its dignity and desirability even if this latest 2017 recolour retains that god awful orange tint, a chunky and realistic body saves the day again along with better graphics and an interesting matte black finish. Prediction (prophesy) No1

(easy to predict)

The trade unions in west EU, are very demanding.

The workers are very demanding

Everybody is very demanding, compare to the east-central Europe and Asia. Almost half population on a benefits, therefore the taxation is very high. Tomorrow many business from the west EU, will go to east-central Europe and Asia. The taxation there is very low, because nobody is on a benefit there, except pensioners and invalids. The unemployment will grow in west EU. The France will suffer most, because the unemployment there already is 8% (in nazi Germany was 5%)

The war can be started in west Europe - as a result of unemployment.

Prediction No2

(not easy to predict)

The dictator (Antichrist) will emerge in Europe

The microchip (mark of the beast) will be implanted into the right hand of each individual.

Those will die, who will get that microchip implanted.
