San Lorenzo Maggiore is a church in Naples, Italy. It is located at the precise geographic center of the historic center of the ancient Greek-Roman city, at the intersection of via San Gregorio Armeno and via dei Tribunali. The name "San Lorenzo" may also refer to the new museum now opened on the premises, as well as to the ancient Roman market beneath the church itself, the Macellum of Naples.

The church's origins derive from the presence of the Franciscan order in Naples during the lifetime of St Francis of Assisi, himself. The site of the present church was to compensate the order for the loss of their earlier church on the grounds where Charles I of Anjou decided to build his new fortress, the Maschio Angioino in the late 13th century.

San Lorenzo actually is a church plus monastery. The new museum takes up the three floors above the courtyard and is given over to the entire history of the area that centers on San Lorenzo, beginning with classical archaeology and progressing to a chart display of historical shipping routes from Naples throughout Magna Grecia and the Roman Empire. The museum provides a detailed account of the local "city hall" that was demolished in order to put up the church in the 13th century and continues up past the Angevin period and into more recent history.

Beneath San Lorenzo, about half of an original Roman market has been excavated. The site has been open since 1992, the result of 25 years of painstaking excavation. The market place is the only large-scale Greek-Roman site excavated in the downtown area.

Making it dramatically more unlikely is that the 2 CITE are locally produced immature individuals .. still hanging around natal site.

This location is breaking an historic trend that CITE have been rarely documented to breed in the Capital Region

This year was 2nd documentation of such.

These 2 are now flight capable ...but i still refer to as Juvenile

I made purchase of ZWO AM5, a compact and light-weighted strain wave gear driven mount and tripod recently and tried them at home.

It was a precise performer, when we operate it with autoguiding.

ZWO AM5 may be a game changer among mounts for telescopes. It works both as an altazimuth mount and an equatorial mount.

ZWO AM5 Tutorial: A quick guide on how to use the mount and tripod: www.youtube.com/watch?v=f81K2Iy7_1c

Be careful that it is not Harmonic Drive mount but strain wave gear driven mount. Harmonic Drive is patent protected special system, which has been developed for decades on reliability and others.

PHD2 Autoguiding intervened more frequently compared to autoguiding with Vixen AXD equatorial mount, Takahashi EM-200FG-Temma 2Z-BL, or Takahashi EM-200 Temma 2 jr equatorial mount, but the correction ended usually within one action. Less backlash and super more torque must have contributed significantly. The result was more precise autoguiding or smaller guiding error RMS number, around 0.6" in total at the night vs usually 1.5" or more with other equatorial mounts. I will enjoy more experience with the compact and light-weighed mount.

I am afraid of the life, reliability, and effect of lacking in balance of weight including shift of polar alignment due to elasticity in the genuine tripod. The genuine carbon fiber reinforced plastic tripod looks too small and light-weighted. The GENUINE stone bag must be helpful.

The Heavy Duty Tripod with short pillar and fat legs for Losmandy G11 may be helpful for the purpose. I have the stout and heavy one in my stock room.

Lack of focus? Out of practice? Just bad luck? Hard to say as this eagle just missed its lunch order which is hanging in the air just behind it. Apparently it at least got a claw on it otherwise the fish wouldn't be in the air like this. I sometimes wonder what reaction the eagle has for missing a fish like this.

I think it's just incredible to see the action stopped like this, the eagle flying on with it's claws clutched, the fish high in the air, and the splash of water still hanging in the air from the eagles grab attempt. This happens so fast that only a fast shutter speed lets us see what happens at that precise moment in time.

I loved the vibrant red tiles and their neat and precise rows. The rich red painted walls really popped against the white open shutters on the windows. To me this scene was like a visual treat - an unexpected little piece of candy :)

Happy Window Wednesday Everyone!

“The Rows (Danish: Stokkene) are six two-storey terraces which were originally built by Henrik Ruise as barracks for the soldiers based at the Kastellet (The Citadel). The dorms measured four by four metres and contained two triple beds, a small table and two benches. Over time they became known under individual names: General Stock where the commanders resided until the Commander's House was built, Artillery Stock for the artillerists, and Star Stock, Elephant Stock, Swan Stock and Fortuna Stock. The Mansard roofs are not part of the original design but date from 1768 when the rows were altered. The original roof profile is today only seen at the end of Artillery Row as seen from the Prince's Bastion.”

⚠ I would like to point out that this photograph was taken under very strict rules aimed at protecting the practice of the nocturnal landscape. The photographs making up this panorama were taken with the same equipment, in the same place, on the same date and the photographs were taken one after the other without wasting time. ⚠

✨ Mirror, mirror, tell me where one of the purest starry skies in Europe is. ✨

With your surprising mirror effect, there is no doubt; the Queyras is very well placed to contemplate the starry sky!

And especially in winter. Do you know why ?

The cold has the advantage of stabilizing the air and reducing atmospheric turbulence. Indeed, if you observe the stars, the more they twinkle, the more it means that the sky is "turbulent" and the less its transparency. To this, the drier air during the winter makes it possible to accentuate the transparency of the sky. It is partly thanks to these exceptional atmospheric conditions that the Queyras is placed among one of the purest skies in Europe.

Sky coupled with a mountain lake and there you are in paradise...! Finally from my point of view.

Perched at an altitude of 2214m, Lac Miroir is one of the essential hikes in Queyras.

A hike with a little more than 500m of D+ is necessary to reach this magical place.

Mirror Lake is ringed with larch trees which turn orange in the fall; probably the best time of year to admire it!

This photograph taken entirely at night was taken on the night of June 10 to 11, 2021.

At this time of year, the grass turns green again and the first flowers appear. Which is not the case everywhere!

The bulb of the Milky Way arises on the incredible peak of Heuvières culminating at 3271m of altitude which will delight mountaineers.

And you ? Are you more of a contemplative of the starry sky? Rather hike? More of a mountaineer? Or all 3?

Personally, I am contemplative of starry skies and hiking!

Government Center station is an intermodal transit hub in the Government Center district of Downtown Miami, Florida. It is operated by Miami-Dade Transit and serves as a transfer station for the Metrorail and Metromover rapid transit systems and as a bus station for Metrobus, Paratransit, and Broward County Transit buses. The station is located near the intersection of Northwest First Street and First Avenue, a part of the Stephen P. Clark Government Center Building. It opened to service May 20, 1984, next to the site of a former FEC railway station which is now MiamiCentral.

The development of the civic center was reinvigorated during the 1970s and early 1980s during a Downtown building boom. The boom spurred the development and construction of the Stephen P. Clark Government Center, Metrorail, Metromover, and the Miami-Dade Cultural Plaza, which currently includes HistoryMiami and the Miami-Dade Public Library System Main Library.

Construction on the present-day Government Center station began in June 1982. The station was primarily designed by the Cambridge Seven Associates in collaboration with Edward D. Stone. The station was built by the Frank J. Rooney Construction Company. Metrorail service, between Overtown and Kendall, following the precise route of the FEC, commenced service in May 1984.

An unused, partially completed ghost platform for a future East-West Metrorail line is adjacent to the west side of the mezzanine level below the current Metrorail station and is easily visible to passengers transferring from Metromover to Metrorail. This platform was part of the original design concept which interfaced with the atrium of the Miami-Dade County Administration Building, and the people mover station.

The second floor of the complex includes the main fare control for Metrorail and platforms for the Metromover loops, as well as the Metrofare Shops area. The third floor of the complex is a mezzanine for transfers between the two services. A ghost platform for a never-built east-west Metrorail line is located on this level. The fourth floor of the complex is the Metrorail platform. It is the highest transit platform of the Miami-Dade Transit system in height and can hold up to eight Metrorail cars.

Safe flight and precise landing

mamoiada-sfilata de Sos Mamuthones

Probably actors who performed pagan rituals in ancient times but whose precise origins and meaning have been lost in the centuries, Sos Mamuthones and Issohadores have manteined intact their fascination and mystery.

"Without the Mamuthones there is no Carnival, say the people of Mamoiada. Theu are its most important feature, its symbol, almost. Their appearance is taken as a sign of festivity, happiness and times of grace.

The preparation of the masquerade creates an industrious ardour, a frantic, thrilled atmosphere that spreads to the whole community.

That of the Mamuthones is a solemn ceremonial, an orderly procession and dance at the same time.

The Mamuthones, in two parallel rows and flanked by the Issohadores, move very slowly, bent under the weight of the cowbells and, at regular intervals, lift their shoulder shaking the bell harness all at the same time. The Issohadores move with more agile steps and jumps, then, suddenly, they run, swiftly throw their lasso ("Sa Soha") to catch and pull towards them as prisoner the male friend or the woman they have singled out in the crowd."

Alicja Kwade has created a space frame consisting of concrete walls, double mirrors, empty metal frames that conjure the labyrinth pattern, and more precisely the maze. On the scale of the architecture of the nave, this construction generates a relationship with space, time and destiny. The artist intends to multiply our attention, to disorient us and to awaken our senses by disturbing our bearings. A game of life-size reflections that allows him to materialize the abstract concepts of time and space. At the ground, is arranged a set of 16 sculptures that the artist has modeled, inspired by the concept of the suite of "Suite de Fibonacci ": according to this principle, each sculpture constitutes the sum of the two preceding ones.

For Alicja Kwade, this work works like an image that would be constantly evolving, as the visitor moves. By choosing to reflect or not the objects inside the maze, the artist pushes the images to move, shapes to be transformed according to a logic of sequencing. Above our heads hangs the menace of a disturbing pendulum in action, composed of a clock and a stone, which turn dangerously a few meters above our heads at the end of chains. The space is invaded by the amplified sound of the "ticking" generated by the clock. This sound vibration in space materializes the passing time. It illustrates the desire of the artist to make palpable, visible, concrete, a notion as abstract as the time that elapses inevitably. He also emphasizes an idea of infinity and asks us the question of the present moment. Where are we ? Is the pendulum spinning or is it the Earth on which we move without realizing it?

As I entered this devastated hall, I was immediately struck by the dramatic power of the scene. My intention was to capture the very essence of desolation while preserving a certain beauty within the chaos. I chose to work with the faint natural light filtering in, creating these warm tones that contrast with the blackness of the debris. The perspective framing, guided by the rows of charred seats, draws the eye towards the back of the room, suggesting the immensity of the destruction.

I wanted every detail to tell a story - the twisted metal structures on the ceiling, the seats frozen in their final position, the walls bearing the scars of the disaster. This photograph isn't just a document of destruction; it's also a reflection on the fragility of our living and cultural spaces. By working with a long exposure and choosing this precise angle, I sought to create an almost surreal atmosphere, as if suspended in time, where beauty paradoxically emerges from chaos.

The precise origin of the practice of leaving crosses on the hill is uncertain, but it is believed that the first crosses were placed on the former Jurgaičiai or Domantai hill fort after the 1831 Uprising. Over the generations, not only crosses and crucifixes, but statues of the Virgin Mary, carvings of Lithuanian patriots and thousands of tiny effigies and rosaries have been brought here by Catholic pilgrims. The exact number of crosses is unknown, but estimates put it at about 55,000 in 1990 and 100,000 in 2006.

Have you ever noticed precise, conical divots in soft earth beneath large trees or at the base of cliffs? The conical pits are ant traps, dug and maintained by antlion larva, which may occupy the trap for two or three years before transforming to an adult (see first comment).

The larva lies patiently, just barely beneath the surface at the bottom of the pit, waiting for the sound and vibration of sliding sand, meaning that a beetle or spider or ant has fallen into the trap and is trying to climb out. The larva grabs it with its large jaws, injects venom to immobilize the prey and enzymes that turn the prey's tissues to mush. The antlion then siphons the digested material through the mandibles and tosses the hollow carcass out of the trap.

This is a live larva (promptly returned to its trap after this shot) caught beneath pines in a ponderosa pine forest in Boulder, Colorado.

I’ve returned from Hertfordshire, Royston to be precise. We said our goodbye’s just before 8am and made it back home by 11:45. The keynote there is I didn’t have to stop for a pee, credit for that has to be down to the medication I’m on for my prostate, although as usual the cramp in my legs was giving me gyp. I filled the tank in Royston’s Tesco’s, it was 199.9p a litre, last time I filled up here in mid May it was 174p, but the kicker was that petrol was 186p, why the 13p differential. Jesse put on a brave face but was a little twisty, he doesn’t like to say goodbye to has Nonna and Nonno, but he had a treat lined up for this morning, a visit to the cinema (for the first time) to see Lightyear. We’ve been watching the trailers all week, I wish I could have been with him to see his little face. My visit was just timed right to catch the field next to my daughters full of Poppies and other meadow flora. This was the same field that was covered in Phacelia on our last visit. Although I took many a photo of this field of blooms this photo I’m posting is probably my favourite (so far) of the week, which includes my summer solstice jaunt up in Northumberland. I took this photo with a long lens on Saturday morning on the dog walk, it had the minimal feel I was looking for. I have a crazy lot of photo’s to sift through at the moment so I won’t be hard pushed to post a few this week. I hope you all have had a good weekend.

Astronomers using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope have for the first time precisely measured the distance to one of the oldest objects in the universe, a collection of stars born shortly after the big bang.

This new, refined distance yardstick provides an independent estimate for the age of the universe. The new measurement also will help astronomers improve models of stellar evolution. Star clusters are the key ingredient in stellar models because the stars in each grouping are at the same distance, have the same age, and have the same chemical composition. They therefore constitute a single stellar population to study.

The precise extent of the once wooded area from which Southwood in the town of Ramsgate takes its name is uncertain. Today, Southwood has much clearer definition in the local inhabitant's mental map as a predominantly residential area and as the home ground of Ramsgate football. It equates with the area of the former Southwood Farm and of Southwood House. Southwood's large, Victorian water tower is also one of Ramsgate's distinctive and prominent landmarks. The Southwood neighbourhood occupies an area of about half a square kilometre, and consists of predominantly late nineteenth and early twentieth century houses. It sits on elevated ground one kilometre to the west of Ramsgate town centre and behind the more prestigious houses, cliff-top promenades, and greens of the West Cliff area.

The Tower was built in 1887 and was made a grade II listed building in 1988, now converted into flats. I can see the back of this building from anywhere in the front of the house.,

Apparently my house was lot 3 when the farm was sold and was used as a brickfield until the row of houses were built in 1902. A brickfield is a common location name in southeast England. Its name derives from a field where the topsoil was removed and the clay beneath was stripped, and mixed with chalk and ash to create bricks, we now have topsoil and chalk so I suppose all the clay was used up!

Kathakali is a stylized classical Indian dance-drama noted for the attractive make-up of characters, elaborate costumes, detailed gestures and well-defined body movements presented in tune with the anchor playback music and complementary percussion. It originated in the country's present day state of Kerala during the 17th century and has developed over the years with improved looks, refined gestures and added themes besides more ornate singing and precise drumming. A much photographed view of the Nicholas Hawksmoor designed towers of All Souls College. For this version I've 'corrected the verticals' in Photoshop and given it a pseudo infrared treatment.

In case anyone is wondering why this view is just about the only view you see of the building it's because it's not generally open to the public so can only be photographed through the ornate gateway on the Radcliffe Square.

From Wikipedia : "Every hundred years, and generally on 14 January, there is a commemorative feast after which the fellows parade around the college with flaming torches, singing the Mallard Song and led by a "Lord Mallard" who is carried in a chair, in search of a legendary mallard that supposedly flew out of the foundations of the college when it was being built. During the hunt the Lord Mallard is preceded by a man bearing a pole to which a mallard is tied – originally a live bird, latterly either dead (1901) or carved from wood (2001). The last mallard ceremony was in 2001 and the next is due in 2101.

The precise origin of the custom is not known, but it dates from at least 1632. A benign parody of this custom has been portrayed as the Unseen University's "Megapode chase" in Sir Terry Pratchett's 2009 novel Unseen Academicals."

Oleander (Nerium oleander) is a shrub or small tree in the dogbane family Apocynaceae, toxic in all its parts. It is so widely cultivated that no precise region of origin has been identified, though southwest Asia has been suggested. The ancient city of Volubilis in Morocco may have taken its name from the Berber name oualilt for the flower. Oleander is a vigorous grower in warm subtropical regions, where it is extensively used as an ornamental plant in parks, along roadsides and in private gardens. It is most commonly grown in its natural shrub form, but can be trained into a small tree with a single trunk. In cold-winter climates Oleander can be grown in greenhouses and conservatories, or as potted indoor plants that can be kept outside in the summer. Oleander has historically been considered a poisonous plant because some of its compounds may exhibit toxicity, especially to animals, when consumed in large amounts. Among these compounds are oleandrin and oleandrigenin, known as cardiac glycosides, which are known to have a narrow therapeutic index and can be toxic when ingested.

Oleander pospolity (Nerium oleander) – gatunek rośliny z rodziny toinowatych (Apocynaceae).

Ahi weaves precise slashes and pyroclastic strikes to form his unique eruptive fighting style, leaving only ash and obsidian in his wake.

Made some changes to Ahi. The shins have been replaced to be more sleek, and some of the torso colors have been changed to be less messy. Also, the sword blade is the correct color. The leg articulation is a lot better in this version, so he can actually pull off some neat poses.

Perhaps you will see, like me, in the light on the trunk of this tree a half covered face with a large blond lock ... face, eye, nose mouth and neck are easily recognizable.

I specify : it’s not me !!

"Hummingbird - Painterly Portrait" by Patti Deters.

This is a close-up portrait of a female ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) perched at the end of a small branch. It is the males that have the red throat - females have white throat feathers, although they may occasionally sport a single red feather. Females have rounded tail feathers with white tips. This tiny little hummer can beat her wings about 53 times a second. She has very short legs that prevent her from walking or hopping - the best she can do is shuffle along a perch. But she is an exceptionally quick precise flyer and you can even hear the beat of the wings if you ever get close enough. The American Cemetery in Normandy contains the graves of 9,386 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations. The precise rows of white crosses and stars are a stark reminder of the sacrifice they each made. They are celebrated on Memorial Day, but remembered every day.
