So, there I was, on the lookout before the Grey Refugio - the Grey Lake lookout, to be precise - at a cool 787 feet (that's 240 meters for you fancy folks). Think killer views of the Grey Glacier, which, by the way, is part of this MASSIVE ice field - the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, no big deal. This icy beast boasts a 30-meter (98-foot) wall at its peak and stretches a whopping 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) wide. Now, that's some serious Game of Thrones Winterfell vibes, minus the whole White Walker situation (thankfully!).

 

Speaking of crazy deep, this Grey Lake is no joke. We're talking over 500 meters (1,640 feet) deep! Don't worry, I did the math for all you non-metric folks.

 

The view? Unreal. Radiant blue ice everywhere, icebergs chilling in the grey water, and the Patagonian wind giving my face a high five. Talk about a unique experience! Oh, and yeah, I saw some condors soaring around like feathered sky gods. Not bad, Patagonia, not bad at all.

 

And let me tell you, the panorama was epic. Cerro Paine Grande, the Paine Massif, forests by the lake, rocky hills, and snow-capped peaks that disappeared into the clouds - it was like something out of a painting. The only thing missing was a dramatic ice chunk calving off the glacier (which, to be honest, would have been a bit too close for comfort).

 

Now, the hike between refuges was intense. So intense, in fact, that most of my pics are from my phone. Blame the crazy strong, freezing wind that threatened to turn my fancy camera lens into a dust bunny magnet. You feel me?

  

Forget Wall climbing, this was a whole other level! Just descended this sheer rock face with nothin' but my 50-liter (13,2-gallon) pack and camera gear to hold me back. Talk about a sketchy scramble! (Especially since that climb down there, lookin' all innocent, is still waitin' for me.) And get this - gotta trek another 6 klicks (that's 3.73 miles, for you fancy folks) to the Grey Refuge, with nary a flat stretch in sight. Anyone got a spare dragon lyin' around? This Khaleesi needs a lift!

 

Bit of a blast from the past, four years to be precise. Not sure why I've never posted this colour version before - I'm guessing it was because at the time I hung onto the words of youtubers who said we should always shoot low ISO when dealing with landscape photography (now it's quite OK to up your ISO). But I also think it was to do with the fact that it was so, so very windy that day. I recall having to lean into the wind to take this photo (I'm sure Petra has a photo of me actually doing so!) so was scared of camera shake. I also recall having to stand on the shoulder strap of the camera bag so the bag wouldn't blow away, it was that windy.

Johann Gottfried Zinn (1727-1759) was a gifted and creative physician and botanist. He is best known for his precise and ground-breaking work on the anatomy of the human eye, and two muscle structures in the eye are named for him, the so-called Zonule of Zinn and Zinn's Circles. But he was also a botanist and the first to describe a Zinnia under the Latin descriptive Rudbeckia foliis oppositis. In Mexico whence the plant hails it was called 'mal de ojos', hard on the eyes because of its brightness.

Zinn and great Linnaeus had a lively correspondence. Among the many topics of their mutual interest was the 'movement' of plants such as that of Mimosa pudica. Zinn had experimented with that plant in order to understand its mechanism. Linnaeus had done the same and he expanded his experiments to the opening and closing of flowers. He found that such movement is often governed by the time of day. Thus he allowed for the construction of a so-called Horologium florae, a Flower Clock (1751), with flowers planted in such a way that you could tell time by their opening and closing.

Saddened by Zinn's early death, Linnaeus named the Rudbeckia his friend had so fully described: Zinnia.

The edge of a succulent leaf, to be precise. Or not so precise, because I think this should be an Aeonium, but there are so many varieties that I couldn't find which variety this is exactly. The leaves are thick, and feel velvety to the touch, because each leaf is covered with a dense fluff of translucent, tiny, tentacle-like hair. And, let's face it, plants in my home need to be: easy to care for. Which succulents definitely are ;)

 

I've used both extension tubes (10 and 16 mm) and the Raynox DCR-250 close-up lens to get as close as possible. The image was backlit by a small LED flashlight, and it's a focus stack of 15 images which I've combined in Helicon Focus (method B, radius 6, smoothing 4). Further processed in DXO PhotoLab with local adjustments on the upper right part of the leaf (exposure / highlights) which was a little too bright, because I had to place the flashlight a little off center (on the right) to avoid that it's visible in the image. Further processing in Analog Efex (Detail Extraction and Classic Camera 6 further tweaked). Final tweaks in LR where I'd slighty increased the green saturation, lowered the blacks, and boosted the structure.

Und eigentlich der Blattrand eines kleinen Sukkulenten-Blattes. Auf jeden Fall handelt es sich um ein Dickblattgewächs, vermutlich Aeonium; die Blätter wachsen rosettenförmig, haben eine kleine, nach innen gewölbte Spitze und sind vollständig von einem samtig-dichten Flaum winziger, durchsichtiger Härchen überzogen. Ich habe hier beide Zwischenringe (10 und 16 mm) und den Raynox DCR-250 Makrovorsatz verwendet, um möglichst nah an diese faszinierenden, tentakelartigen Härchen heranzukommen.

 

Beleuchtet von rechts hinten mit einer kleinen Taschenlampe. Licht direkt von hinten war hier nicht machbar, weil das Blatt kleiner als der Durchmesser des Frontelements der Taschenlampe (1,5 cm) war. Da der rechte obere Teil des Blattes dadurch ein wenig zu hell geraten war, habe ich in DXO mit dem Werkzeug für lokale Anpassungen dort die Spitzlichter und die Belichtung etwas runtergeschraubt. Was noch: Analog Efex, dort nur Detailextrahierung und Klassische Kamera 6 mit eigenen Anpassungen, keine Vignette, die hier nur gestört hätte. Und in LR habe ich noch die Schwarztöne etwas runtergesetzt, die Grün-Sättigung leicht erhöht und die Struktur verstärkt.

Had been on a trip to Kuttiady, a town in the Kozhikode district of Kerala, India. The place is known for the Kuttiady Hydro Electric Project situated along the banks of the Kuttiady River. This was clicked at the Kakkayam Dam reservoir, a part of the project. Kakkayam is on the outskirts of the Western Ghats and the Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary. Kakkayam has an abundant wildlife population and is also a trekking and rock climbing destination. Even though we reached before the place opened, the light was harsh, but the weather was suitably pleasant.

an amazingly precise cut on very thick hair. bravo to the cutters who get it right. i've cut both my kid's hair and symmetry ain't easy. art is all around.

Here’s and another image from my archives, taken in 1986 to be precise from the south tower rooftop observation platform of the World Trade Center take with my Minolta X-700 SLR. The Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges and East River all clearly visible. I never did go up to the top of the WTC again and obviously it was destroyed on September 11th 2001. Did not imagine that 1986 would be the last time on that observation platform, always imagined taking my kids but kept putting it off. For those of us that live here in the New York City when you carefully look at the area surrounding the Brooklyn Bridge you realize how much that area has changed in 32 years, no Jane’s Carousel, boarded up Empire Warehouse and to the south where today is Brooklyn Bridge Parks grassy knolls there was unused warehouse space. On the Manhattan side today a 800 foot 71 story tower dwarfs the bridge on its north. Interestingly enough though under the Brooklyn Bridge is a Circleline Boat which still is in operation with it tours of New York City.

As promised, we are back today in the beautiful birch forest near Tisa in Bohemian Switzerland. To be more precise, we are standing in front of it today and have the sunrise behind us.

It's amazing how much this angle changes the effect of the picture.

The morning mist lies heavy on last year's slightly frozen grass, which crunches and rustles with every step you walk over.

The temperatures are near freezing and an icy wind is blowing in my face. Despite this, or perhaps because of this, there is a poignant silence here that immediately affects me and totally relaxes me.

The more strenuous part of the morning is still waiting for me here. Because after taking the photos from here, I walked across this bumpy meadow down into the forest, which you can see in the background here.

Wie versprochen sind wir heute zurück im dem schönen Birkenwald bei Tisa in der Böhmischen Schweiz. Genauer gesagt stehen wir heute davor und haben den Sonnenaufgang im Rücken.

Es ist schon erstaunlich, wie sehr dieser Blickwinkel die Wirkung des Bildes verändert.

Der Morgennebel liegt schwer auf dem leicht angefrorenen Gras vom letzten Jahr, welches bei jedem Schritt knirscht und raschelt, wenn man darüber läuft.

Die Temperaturen liegen im Bereich des Gefrierpunktes und mir weht ein eisiger Wind ins Gesicht. Trotzdem, oder gerade deshalb, herrscht hier eine ergreifende Stille, die sich sofort auf mich auswirkt und mich total entspannt.

Der etwas anstrengendere Teil des Morgens wartet hier noch auf mich. Denn nach den Aufnahmen von hier bin ich über diese Huckel Wiese hinunter in den Wald gelaufen, den man hier im Hintergrund sehen kann.

This is the precise moment he bit me. It was my own fault. I saw a commotion outside and Camille (cat) was going after this juvenile chipmunk. I grabbed the little guy just as she was closing in, but I had the camera in my hand and decided to take a quick picture. Once he bit me, he wasn't inclined to let go. I shook him off onto a soft patch in the garden, but Camille was right there. So I picked him up again (some people are slow learners) and this time set him down in front of a known chipmunk tunnel.

 

I'm kidding about the rabies.

I hope.

After yesterday we were in the dense forest, today we return to a little more open terrain.

To be more precise, we are back at the sunrise in the Königsbrueck Heather from two weeks ago. On the photo you can see quite well that the heather blossom is far from at its peak. You can see the typical purple color everywhere, but you can see from the flowers in the foreground that there is much more possible.

If the weather cooperates, I plan to go there again next weekend.

As you can also see, the sunrise has been here for a while, because the sun has now reached a height that it can shine over the tops of the birch trees. By the way, that was the moment I saw it for the first time this morning. Then the band of clouds, which had stubbornly clung to the horizon up to this point, had finally begun to dissolve.

 

Nachdem wir gestern im dichten Wald waren kehren wir heute zurück in etwas offeneres Gelände.

Genauer gesagt sind wir zurück beim Sonnenaufgang in der Königsbrücker Heide von vor zwei Wochen. Auf dem Foto kann man ganz gut sehen, dass die Heideblüte noch lange nicht auf ihrem Höchststand ist. Man sieht zwar überall den typischen Lila Farbton, doch man erkennt an den Blüten im Vordergrund, dass da noch viel mehr möglich ist.

Wenn das Wetter mit spielt plane ich nächstes Wochenende nochmal einen Ausflug dort hin.

Wie Ihr auch sehen könnt, ist der Sonnenaufgang hier schon eine Zeit vorbei, den die Sonne hat jetzt eine Höhe erreicht, dass sie über die Wipfel der Birken hinweg scheinen kann. Das war übrigens der Moment, wo ich sie das erste mal gesehen habe an diesem Morgen. Da hatte das Wolkenband, welches sich bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt hartnäckig am Horizont festgehalten hat, begonnen sich endlich aufzulösen.

Hémis (Inde) – Il n’est pas encore 14 h. À 15 heures précises, devant les touristes, les moines donneront un spectacle de danses rituelles. Les offrandes et les dons des croyants ne suffisent plus à financer le fonctionnement du monastère, il faut se diversifier. Le développement du tourisme est une aubaine, mais les moines doivent abandonner quelques heures l’étude des textes sacrés pour se faire, quelques heures par jour, intermittents du spectacle.

Sur la photo, les religieux répètent les pas d’une danse qu’ils vont produire publiquement pour la première fois, et dont certains moines-danseurs ne maîtrisent pas pleinement. Ils m’ont dit comment s’appelait cette danse, mais elle a un nom à coucher dehors et je ne l’ai pas retenu.

Distant city: pandemic times

But even more fortunately for the passengers sitting on this train, because the wooden structure looks no more trustworthy up close than it does from a distance (as you can probably see here). 6 trains cross this viaduct per day (3 in each direction). This is the first one of the day, because at seven in the morning there are hardly any tourists here and it is much more relaxed.

Unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to ask the train driver whether he agreed to the publication of this photo. However, since he greeted me warmly as he drove past, I assume it's okay.

 

Könnt Ihr Euch noch an das Foto von der Bahnlinie des Todes in der Nähe von Kanchanaburi in Thailand erinnern ?

Hier befinden wir und wieder an diesem Ort. Genauer gesagt stehe ich sogar immernoch an der selben Stelle. Nur der Zug hat sich inzwischen in meine Richtung bewegt.

Zum Glück für alle fährt dieser an der Stelle sehr langsam. Gut für mich, denn so war ich der Lage schnell das Objektiv von meiner Kamera zu wechseln das Setting zu ändern und wieder in Position zu gehen. Doch noch mehr als das zum Glück für die Reisenden, die in diesem Zug sitzen, denn die Holzkonstruktion wirkt aus der Nähe nicht vertrauenerweckender als aus der Distanz (wie ihr hier vielleicht erkennen könnt). Pro Tag überqueren 6 Züge dieses Viadukt (3 in jede Richtung). Dies hier ist der Erste an diesem Tag, denn morgens um sieben sind hier noch kaum Touristen vor Ort und das ist deutlich entspannter.

Ich hatte leider nicht die Gelegenheit den Zugführer zu fragen, ob er mit der Veröffentlichung dieses Fotos einverstanden ist. Da er mich jedoch beim Vorbeifahren sehr herzlich gegrüßt hat gehe ich mal davon aus, dass es in Ordnung ist.

Although there is no precise geographical definition for the "Cornwall’s Forgotten Corner" it is taken to mean (by local residents) all of the Rame Peninsula, as well all of the English Channel coast area to the east, but not including Looe. The northern boundary of the corner is defined by the A38 road.

It is reputed to be "forgotten" because the area is effectively by-passed by visitors to Cornwall, as well as being geographically remote from the administrative headquarters of Cornwall at Truro, almost 50 miles away.

It is isolated due to its geography, as it is bounded by the English Channel, Plymouth Sound, the River Tamar and the River Lynher. Visitors have to double back on themselves after taking the main A38 road from Plymouth at Trerulefoot and onto the A374.

The area effectively became more remote with the improvement of the A30 between Exeter and Penzance, leading visitors to bypass the area altogether.

The Rame Peninsula, part of the Forgotten Corner, is included in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is also steeped in history, with many military forts, and archaeological points of interest. The area is essentially rural, with the main industry being agriculture. It is also a residential commuting area for Plymouth.

This image was taken from the roadside of the B3247 near Tregantle Fort, just as the morning sunshine disappeared behind a bank of cloud. Three weeks later it still has yet to return!

 

Today we're taking another look at beautiful city of Dresden before we head back to Prague.

To be precise, we're experiencing a fantastic sunset at the famous and, in my opinion, absolutely spectacular Semper Opera House.

This opera house, built in 1778, takes its name from its architect, Gottfried Semper, whose name was already known beyond the borders of Saxony.

In front of the entrance to the opera house, you can see the 13.5 m high (including the base) King John Monument, the regent who commissioned this building.

I recommend anyone who has the opportunity to attend a performance here (or at least take a guided tour inside). Because the Semper Opera House is just as spectacular inside as it is outside.

I'll be back here on Friday to see Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" again.

 

Heute werfen wir mal wieder einen Blick auf das wunderschöne Dresden, bevor wir uns wieder Prag zuwenden.

Um genau zu sein erleben wir hier einen traumhaften Sonnenuntergang an der berühmten und aus meiner Sicht absolut spektakulären Semperoper.

Den Namen trägt dieses 1778 erbaute Opernhaus wegen seinem Architekten Gottfried Semper, dessen Name auch damals schon über die Grenzen Sachsens hinaus bekannt war.

Vor dem Eingang zur Oper seht ihr das 13,5 m hohe (inklusive Sockel) König-Johann-Denkmal, dem Regenten, der diesen Bau seinerzeits in Auftrag gegeben hat.

Ich empfehle jedem der die Möglichkeit hat, hier einmal eine Vorstellung zu besuchen (oder zumindest eine Führung in Inneren). Denn im Inneren ist die Semperoper mindestens genau so spektakulär.

Ich werde am Freitag mal wieder hier sein um mir Tschaikowskis "Schwanensee" nochmals anzusehen.
