I was about to close the window and notice something special.

I take the first car I have available and click.

Praying mantis.

A particular insect almost belonging to another Planet.

It has many meanings, but one above all is that many see this insect as a sign of deeper peace, quiet and the embodiment of meditation.

That is a good omen!

Found this praying mantis on the top of our block fence enjoying the warm afternoon sun.

We hadn't seen any mantis in the garden for several weeks so were very pleased to find him.

found undercover at my Early Childhood Centre after a stormy day: thunder, lightning & heavy rain. The children were very interested😀

It is on the outside of our kitchen window. One of the legs is folded up against its body. Taken by Edgar.

I had a nice walk with my macro lens. It was a good day for insects. I'm always amazed when I watch a praying mantis turn its head to stare at me.

Hyperbole? Not a bit of it. For other insects, this is indeed the face of death. Beyond that, in the 1957 B-Movie, the terror of these wonderful horrors being much larger was explored.

Top Comment Box shows the poster from that entertaining movie.

Not sure how this praying mantis lost the distal end (tibia, tarsus) of its front leg, but I imagine this mantis narrowly escaped a predator. Life goes on...

Godenrod in the Bog, Charlestown Meadows

Here I composed the little beast in the frame with the focus on the eyes at the shallow depth of field.

Getting out the Halloween yard decorations yesterday (garage) and this praying mantis startled me. I'm used to them being bright kelly green, not brown. Shot this on sport mode so the grain is a little high.

When I was a kid I used to dream that one day exotic large insects like praying mantises might one day become established in the UK - now, thanks to the impending catastophe of climate change, I got my wish!! From a secret site that I can't disclose, somewhere in southern England - my son Tom and I found 4 males in half an hour, but the bigger females eluded us so I'll be back in September to see if I can find one. Mind you, the males were impressive at around 75mm in length.
