Hyperbole? Not a bit of it. For other insects, this is indeed the face of death. Beyond that, in the 1957 B-Movie, the terror of these wonderful horrors being much larger was explored.

Not sure how this praying mantis lost the distal end (tibia, tarsus) of its front leg, but I imagine this mantis narrowly escaped a predator. Life goes on...
Getting out the Halloween yard decorations yesterday (garage) and this praying mantis startled me. I'm used to them being bright kelly green, not brown. Shot this on sport mode so the grain is a little high.
