almost stepped on this creature too! I do my best to watch for life where I step and stick to pathways.... rarely do I see a Praying Mantis so this was pretty special!
I haven't seen too many of these - - so it was nice to see a backyard visitor of another kind.
Looks like he's from another planet, but apparently not.
I think this is a baby praying mantis, sunning on the tip top of the basil plant. I'm not sure about the "baby" part; it could just be a small species. I'm happy to see him/her because I know they eat aphids. (approximately 2.5 cm long)
Mitsinjo Community Reserve, Andasibe, Madagascar.
I am again indebted to Professor Chris Thomas for the ID.
Tidda and I came upon this praying mantis who was standing in the middle of the trail. You will notice that the right forearm is missing. Looks like a pretty devastating injury and possibly quite recent.
Apparently, mantises are the only insects who can turn their necks to look sideways - and that's exactly how this mantis was keeping track of my feeble attempts to snap a photo. The bright sun rendered my screen useless and I had to hold back a curious Tidda with one arm. Finally, she/he lost interest in being photographed and proceeded over to a bush that seemed good for climbing upon.
Tidda and I continued on the trail but almost immediately were confronted by ANOTHER mantis! A brown one, and walking towards us quite rapidly! Tidda actually jumped to the side as she was startled. Upon closer inspection, I saw that the brown mantis had a similar traumatic amputation of one foreleg!! Had I stumbled into the middle of some epic battle that continued across multiple scenes??? Was the brown one coming to finish the fight?
I couldn't stay to see what would happen but I have no doubt some high drama took place there that afternoon.
Cropped and enlarged. Does anyone know what it is doing?
According to previous images the rear is getting bigger.
I don't usually turn my long lens toward insects, let alone cars, but... Just as I was about to get into my car, I noticed a praying mantis striking a pose on the bonnet. Naturally, I couldn’t resist taking a few quick shots of my unexpected model before gently relocating him to a greener, more fitting backdrop.
There are about 100 praying mantis species in Australia—I have no idea which one this is.
