This bicycle tunnel pays homage to prairie dogs with artwork that mimicks their underground burrows. Prairie dogs are really nasty rodents that carry the plague, eat their young, and make holes that cripple cattle. But Boulderites love them so much that they "relocate" whole prairie dog colonies whenever it's needed because of construction or farming. Why? These rodents are a food supply for large birds of prey, and mammals like mountain lions, fox, and coyotes.

We had a university "awayday" at the zoo, so I had a wander around at lunchtime.

This picture is looking west toward St. Mary lake in eastern Glacier Park. Have students note the difference in color in the landscape and think what causes this difference (EA: water - irrigation for crops). Also, note that the prairie is not necessarily always flat. Can be rolling hills.

This was my first experience watching prairie dogs, and they are HILARIOUS! I spent sunrise to sunset watching their antics. Youngsters frequently wrestled and chased each-other, and sometimes chased their mothers. Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge, CO.
