I took a Butterfly Photography class sponsored by Desert Botanical Garden and taught by Joanne West. I learned a lot and practiced a lot. I really feel that I had improved significantly by the end of the class.
We had a classroom presentation followed by private hands-on practice in the Butterfly Pavilion.
Just my luck, we had a lot of rain the night before and it was still wet and cold. The butterflies weren't active, but I did get a great chance to shoot some wildflowers with dew on them
I haven't been able to positively identify this flower. Google Lens indicates scarlet sage. Any help or correction will be appreciated.

My favorite insect. Consultation from a practiced expert brought life to this fun little build. I picked way uglier colours when I originally saw these new elements as wings.
Was fun :^)

Beavers have practiced their art and architecture extensively on miles of Trout Creek. Here, two dams create a succession of pools.
Before getting into the title, let me address the image. In addition to the Finchette on the left side of the feeder, we see here a couple of new additions, not necessarily to the yard but definitely to the camera. So, why not introduce them simultaneously in a sitting pose plainly showing the backside as well as a snazzy flight maneuver by, yes, some of you may have guessed, Pine Siskins. As you can see, they are a pretty colored bird with beaks that are more slender than that of a Finch. We used to have a couple of green ones coming around but no such luck this year yet. One more reason we are looking at this flight shot is that I have encountered some criticism regarding my yard management techniques. I want to make it clear that Levitation is not the only thing happening here, although and perhaps because of my dislike for rules (in spite of my German upbringing – nothing is Verboten here) Levitation is practiced a lot.
The reason I am bringing up the “Counting Flowers on the Wall and Inner Peace” in the title is that I simply neglected to mention a couple of things in my previous exposé on Inner Peace. Not only do I do a lot of bird watching (as you may have realized by now), there are other things such as counting ducks that I previously mentioned. Playing solitaire and watching TV have actually taking a back seat to my taking pictures. Smoking cigarettes is still high on the list. Some of you, however, posted such marvelous flower shots with such vivid colors that I now find myself Counting Flowers On The Wall. These, of course, only exist in my mind but are not any less vivid than the real thing.

Although I like the Statler Brothers (they did the original), this is a much snazzier version with way better sound. Addicted to the toe stomping, hand clapping beat.
Good evening folks, was out on Saturday with my old new camera system and practiced more Birds in Flight with the new Firmware Update and just need to iron out some bugs.
I also explained a problem and was a mistake. It was with Flickr, under the edit tab I was able to see imojies and add it to an image, it is no longer there, please help if you can, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for visiting and listening, and will continue to try harder for better images, thanks to everyone.
These guys were not easy folks, but he has one in his beak and one in his talons, not easy at all.

Twelve-week old fox pups practiced their levitation skills yesterday while their momma watched. They use one another to build their speed, agility, and timing before they go after healthy, live prey like voles, mice, snakes, and rabbits. It's not surprising that they far exceed the jump heights and hang time of Michael Jordan.
Hecate was a powerful goddess, feared and revered by mortals and immortals alike. She was the goddess of magic, witchcraft, and the night, and her powers were unmatched. But despite her fearsome reputation, Hecate was not without compassion.
One night, as Hecate roamed the earth in search of those who practiced magic, she stumbled upon a young witch who was in great distress. The girl was weeping uncontrollably, her face streaked with tears, and Hecate could sense the depth of her sorrow.
"What troubles you, child?" Hecate asked gently, kneeling down beside the young witch.
"My coven has been destroyed," the girl sobbed. "The other witches were all captured or killed, and I am the only one left."
Hecate felt a pang of sadness in her heart. She knew all too well the pain of loss, and she could not bear to see the girl suffer.
"Come with me," she said, taking the young witch by the hand. "I will take you to a safe place where you can rest and recover."
The two of them journeyed through the night, with Hecate using her magic to shield them from harm. Finally, they arrived at a hidden grove, deep in the heart of the forest. There, Hecate showed the young witch a place to sleep and gave her food and drink to nourish her body.
As the girl slept, Hecate sat beside her, watching over her with a mother's care. She knew that the road ahead would be difficult for the young witch, but she also knew that she was strong enough to face it.
When morning came, Hecate bid the young witch farewell, giving her a small charm to keep her safe. "Remember," she said, "you are not alone. The magic of the world is with you, and so am I."
With those words, Hecate vanished into the mist, leaving the young witch to carry on her journey with renewed hope in her heart. And though she would face many trials and tribulations in the years to come, she would always remember the kindness of Hecate, the goddess of magic and the night.

Tai Chi, as it is practiced in the west today, can perhaps best be thought of as a moving form of yoga and meditation combined. There are a number of so- called forms (sometimes also called 'sets') which consist of a sequence of movements. Many of these movements are originally derived from the martial arts (and perhaps even more ancestrally than that, from the natural movements of animals and birds) although the way they are performed in Tai Chi is slowly, softly and gracefully with smooth and even transitions between them.

The Fascinating Story Behind Frozen Head State Park
Frozen Head State Park - Wikipedia
Lookout Tower Trail is a service road connecting Armes Gap with trail junctions atop Frozen Head mountain.
Old Mac Mountain and Frozen Head Firetower is a 6.9 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Wartburg, Tennessee that offers scenic views and is rated as difficult. The trail is about 2.8 miles one-way. Parking is at Armes Gap on the shoulder of TN-116.
It's a rather steady climb from Armes Gap to the top of the fire tower, but as it is an access road for forestry and park vehicles only, the footing is very good and the road appears reasonably maintained. The CCC Depression era fire tower at the top of Frozen Head was replaced in 2006 with a new observation platform that gives some rather spectacular views. Along the way, you'll pass the access to the Brushy Mtn Prison Coal Mine trail (formerly a haul road) and Tub Springs and the adjacent camp site.
Frozen Head State Park and Natural Area is a state park in Morgan County, Tennessee. The park, situated in the Crab Orchard Mountains between the city of Wartburg and the community of Petros, contains some of the highest mountains in Tennessee west of the Blue Ridge.
Frozen Head State Park consists of approximately 24,000 acres, all but 330 acres of which is classified as a state natural area. The terrain varies between 1,300 ft to over 3,000 ft with 14 peaks at or over 3,000 feet. Frozen Head, the park's namesake, is the highest peak at 3,324 feet.
The mountain's name comes from its snow-capped appearance in colder months. The park's highest elevations allow for unobstructed views of East Tennessee's three main physio-graphic features: the Cumberland Plateau, the Tennessee Valley, and across the valley, the Great Smoky Mountains.

Wild Pacific Salmon reefnet fishing is a historical Pacific Northwest salmon fishing method. It has been practiced for centuries by the Native American tribes of the Puget Sound. Fisherman still stand on towers, wearing polaroid sunglasses, waiting to spot a school of Sockeye, Chinook, Pink, Coho or Chum salmon swimming along the reef and over the small net suspended between two boats. This process is incredibly selective, as spotters can identify the exact type of fish swimming below. When a school of salmon is observed, the net is quickly pulled up and the fish are gently spilled into a netted live well to relax after a brief struggle. This process is not only humane but allows for the dissipation of bitter lactic acid built up in the salmon flesh, which results in a sweeter flavor.

The day we did the longest hike ever.
We "practiced" before going to Patagonia every weekend in California so that we can do this hike. We knew that it was going to be a long long hike, and we did it!
Perhaps because we take lots of photographs, it might've taken longer than other hikers do, but who cares, we started hiking at 8 am on that day, under the burning sun we finished the hike by walking back to the town of El Chaltén at 7:30 p.m...
The highlight of the hike was definitely the mountain of "El Chaltén", commonly known as "Mt. Fitz Roy". We hiked to the top of the mountain ranges, then we got to see this beautiful emerald green lake in front of the majestic El Chalten.
This was certainly one of the moments that brought us the greatest joy of life. Of course, more and more photos to come...

The textures of their lives - the traditions that have been practiced for centuries - are reflected in the rich folds of fabric that identify them. Emphasis on the robe creates an immediate impact. They seem one with their enviornment whether they are solo or walking in small groups that morph into shapes. The implied diagonal line in this shot makes for easy passage for my eye to travel and inspect the elements. The color contrast helps isolate the subjects.

Over the past few weeks had made plans for a number of different locals: Cape Disappointment, Dee Wright Observatory, Tilikum Crossing Bridge, and Rowena Crest Viewpoint none of which were in the path of total annular-ity, but which I thought could make for interesting foregrounds for a series of eclipse images. But by Friday night the forecast had worsened with cloud coverage at those locals of ~78-98% and chance of showers or worse at two of those locations. So I was not expecting to see anything of the eclipse...
On Saturday morning around 6AM the sky from inner SW Portland was a mix of scattered low clouds with stars visible thru thin layer of high clouds, but by ~7:30AM that had turned to a dense mix of low and high clouds with no sun visible. By 8:25AM as I was heading south on I5, at Tigard a dense fog was added to the mix, but 20minutes later as I approached Sherwood the fog thinned and the sun became visible thru the medium thick layer of high clouds there. So David Wang and I headed up to this location (where the week before we had practiced taking time lapses and telephoto sun images) to catch the sun at maximum annular-ity if the clouds cooperated. On the previous weekend under clear skies it took 16 stops of ND to get the exposure into a decent range, but this medium thick layer of clouds allowed the use of a 10stop ND filter. The clouds also compromised using spot focus which had worked very well under clear skies the weekend before, so ended up using manual focus instead for the telephoto insert.

"Candomblé (pronounced /kɐ̃dõˈblɛ/) is an African-originated or Afro-Brazilian religion, practiced chiefly in Brazil by the "povo de santo"(people of saint). The religion was largely originated in the city of Salvador, the capital of Bahia. Although Candomblé is practiced primarily within Brazil, it is also practiced in other countries like Uruguay, Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama and Mexico. In Europe: Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain. The religion is based in the anima (soul) of Nature, therefore being also known as Animism. It was developed in Brazil with the knowledge of African Priests that were enslaved and brought to Brazil, together with their mythology, their culture and language, between 1549 and 1888.
The rituals involve the possession of the initiated by Orishas, offerings and sacrifices of the mineral, vegetal and animal kingdom, healing, dancing/trance and percussion. Candomblé draws inspiration from a variety of people of the African Diaspora, but it mainly features aspects of Yoruba orisha veneration."

This is Papago Butte. This is to the west of Desert Botanical Garden on the other side of Galvin Parkway. It looked good in this morning light and framed by this beautiful chain fruit cholla. Good rock. I practiced climbing, rappelling (abseiling), and anchor placements on these rocks.
Hanging Chain Cholla
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylindropuntia_fulgida
"Cylindropuntia fulgida, the jumping cholla, also known as the hanging chain cholla, is a cholla cactus native to Sonora and the Southwestern United States.[1]
In the Southwestern United States, the range extends into the Colorado Desert of California, and in Arizona. There it occurs south and southwest of the Arizona transition zone of the Mogollon Rim; in the northwest-central Sonoran Desert of Arizona, it is in a few selected locales. It also reaches into the northeast section of the Mojave Desert in southern Nevada and Utah, and in the very southern section of the Great Basin Desert of southern Utah. It also occurs just south of the east-west section of the Bill Williams River, east of the Colorado River in the Yuma Desert, and in parts of the Eastern Plains of Colorado.[citation needed]
The jumping cholla is an arborescent (tree-like) plant with one low-branching trunk. It often grows to heights of 4 m (13 feet), with drooping branches of chained fruit. The stems are light green and are strongly tuberculate, with tubercles (small, wart-like projections on the stems) measuring 6 to 9 millimetres (1⁄4 to 1⁄3 in). Together, the plants form fantastic looking forests that may range over many hectares."

I practiced tracking diving gulls with AF servo and this bird ended up entering water too far from me. It is not the sharpest photo, but the reflection is fascinating. The amount and angle of the light were fabulous and the water surface was mirror-smooth. It is amazing that the beak does not create any splash. Perfect hydrodynamic design. I did not know that big birds can be so much fun!
Sufi whirling (or Sufi spinning) is a form of Sama or physically active meditation which originated among Sufis, and which is still practiced by the Sufi Dervishes of the Mevlevi order. It is a customary dance performed within the Sema, or worship ceremony, through which dervishes (also called semazens) aim to reach the source of all perfection, or kemal. This is sought through abandoning one's nafs, egos or personal desires, by listening to the music, focusing on God, and spinning one's body in repetitive circles, which has been seen as a symbolic imitation of planets in the Solar System orbiting the sun.[1] As explained by Sufis:[2]
In the symbolism of the Sema ritual, the semazen's camel's hair hat (sikke) represents the tombstone of the ego; his wide, white skirt (tennure) represents the ego's shroud. By removing his black cloak (hırka), he is spiritually reborn to the truth. At the beginning of the Sema, by holding his arms crosswise, the semazen appears to represent the number one, thus testifying to God's unity. While whirling, his arms are open: his right arm is directed to the sky, ready to receive God's beneficence; his left hand, upon which his eyes are fastened, is turned toward the earth. The semazen conveys God's spiritual gift to those who are witnessing the Sema. Revolving from right to left around the heart, the semazen embraces all humanity with love. The human being has been created with love in order to love. Mevlâna Jalâluddîn Rumi says, "All loves are a bridge to Divine love. Yet, those who have not had a taste of it do not know!"

Fantasia
Fantasia is a traditional equestrian performance practiced during cultural festivals in Morocco, and occurs traditionally to close Berber wedding celebrations in Maghreb. Fantasia is an imported name, the actual traditional term used is "Game of gunpowder".
It consists of a group of horse riders, wearing traditional clothes and charging along a straight path at the same speed so as to form a line; at the end of the ride (about two hundred meters) all riders fire into the sky using old gunpowder guns. The difficulty of the performance is in synchronization during the acceleration and especially during firing so that one single shot is heard. The horse is referred to as a fantasia horse and is of the type called Barb. Gunpowder is called 'baroud', and the traditional gun is a 'moukahla', hence the name "lab el baroud" or "the gunpowder play".
The performance is inspired from historical wartime attacks of Berber and desert knights. Nowadays, Fantasia is considered as a cultural art and a form of martial art; it also symbolizes a strong relationship between the man and the horse, as well as an attachment to tradition.
Each region in Morocco has one or several fantasia groups, called serba, totaling thousands of horse riders nationwide.(From Wiki)
One of the jewish rituals practiced on the eve of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) is known as Kapparot. The head of the family swings live rooster and hen (for women) above his family members heads and recites the following three times:
This is my exchange, this is my substitute, this is my atonement. (This rooster (hen) will go to its death ), while I will enter and proceed to a good long life and to peace
And thus, the sins of a person are symbolically transferred to the fowl. The fowl is then brought to a slaughterhouse and the butcher (shochett) is performs the Derasah (pressing) on which the knife is drawn across the throat and never hacking or pressing it. The ritual of the kapparot with live chickens is still performed in some of the ultra-orthodox communities, in spite of the fact that many prominent figures of the jewish law strongly oppose the custom and consider it as a non-Jewish ritual. I think their reasoning is true nowadays…While I were there, in the slaughterhouse, with all the chickens brought in, I could simply see the death in their eyes.
Italien / Südtirol - Langkofelgruppe
seen from Alpe di Siusi
gesehen von der Seiser Alm
Seiser Alm (Italian: Alpe di Siusi, Ladin: Mont Sëuc) is a Dolomite plateau and the largest high-altitude Alpine meadow (German: Alm) in Europe. Located in Italy's South Tyrol province in the Dolomites mountain range, it is a major tourist attraction, notably for skiing and hiking.
Geography
It is located in the western part of the Dolomites and has an altitude between 1,680 m a.s.l. and 2,350 m a.s.l.; it extends for 52 km² between Val Gardena to the north, the Sassolungo Group to the north-east and the Sciliar massif to the south-east, which with its unmistakable profile is one of the most famous symbols of all the Dolomites. Given the vastness of the area, from here it is possible to admire a large number of mountain groups: among others, the Sella Group, the Rosengarten group and the Marmolada.
It is an alp, it is an area where pasture is practiced, the largest in Europe, divided into numerous plots reserved to grazing or from which the farmers get hay for their farms located downstream.
The eastern part has been included since 1975 in the Sciliar natural park.
Surrounding peaks
The alp offers a panoramic view which includes (from north, in a clockwise direction): Peitlerkofel (Sass de Putia, 2,873 m), the Odle and the Puez groups (3,025 m), the Gran Cir, the Sella group (3,152 m), Langkofel (Sassolungo, 3,181 m) and Plattkofel (Sassopiatto, 2,995 m), the Marmolada (3.343 m), the Pala group (Pale di San Martino, 3,192 m), the Vajolet Towers (2,821 m) the Rosengarten group (Catinaccio, 2,981 m) with the peak of the Kesselkogel (Catinaccio d'Antermoia, 3,002 m) and the Schlern (Sciliar, 2,450 m).
(Wikipedia)
The Langkofel Group (Ladin: Saslonch, Italian: Gruppo del Sassolungo) is a massif in the (western) Dolomites of the Italian Alps. It separates Gröden (to the north) and the Fassa valley (to the south), as well as the Sella massif (to the east) and the Rosengarten (to the west). Northwest of the Langkofel is the Seiser Alm. The highest point in the range is the eponymous Langkofel with a height of 3,181 metres. Taken together, the summits of the Langkofel form an arc which is only open towards the northwest. Within this arc there is only one small mountain, the Langkofelkarspitze, so that the group surrounds a kind of "inner courtyard".
Geology
The region was formed in the early Triassic period (about 230 million years ago) as a coral reef in a shallow tropical sea. Hard limestone was able to form on the outside of the reef, whilst the rock in the interior remained brittle and was quickly eroded away following the uplifting of the range. This left a garland of mountains which, in a clockwise direction, are the Langkofel, Langkofeleck, Fünffingerspitze, Grohmannspitze, Innerkoflerturm, Zahnkofel and Plattkofel.

Tourism
In Summer a gondola lift runs from Sellajoch up to the col of Langkofelscharte and the Toni Demetz refuge hut. From there both the Langkofel (via the Langkofel Hut, Confinböden and the Emilio Comici Hut), as well as the Plattkofel (via the Langkofel Hut, Plattkofel Hut and Frederick Augustus Way) may be circled on hiking trails. The Plattkofel may be reached from the Langkofelkar on the klettersteig route known as the Oskar Schuster Steig and from the Plattkofel Hut over the steep western flank (here without climbing). Between the Langkofel and the Sellajoch is the area of rockslides known as the "Rocky Town" (Steinernen Stadt), notable especially for its rich flora.
In winter there are ski areas at the foot of the Langkofel Group: the Col Rodella (on the Sellajoch), Plan de Gralba, Ciampinoi (with its well-known Saslong world cup run) and Monte Pana/Mont de Sëura.

This is part of a forthcomong series of images documenting Semana Santa (Easter) in Taxco and Cacalotenango, Mexico in April 2007.
This Easter I traveled to the colonial town of Taxco, Mexico to rest and document the Semana Santa customs originally brought from Spain almost 500 years ago – rituals once banned have been regularly practiced in Taxco once a year for the past 100 years or so. One can see, hear, and sense the processions as they wind through the ancient cobblestone streets. Children dressed as angels, followed by the faithful shouldering beautifully carved religious statuses. I witnessed “penitentes” who show their faith through self-inflicted suffering.
These re-enactments and processions are an amalgamation of Spanish and pre-Columbian worship and culture. For example, the use of percussion and musical instruments, and the specific qualities of “penitente” practices. The indigenous identification with Christ’s (Jews) suffering at the hands of the Romans mirrors their own history of suffering at the hands of the conquistadors. The flagellation practices are reminiscent of those found in Aztec culture. Their use of decorations, plants (zarzamora) and materials by the “penitentes” are clear adaptations to medieval Spanish customs and ritual.
Taxco is reported to be the “Silver Center of the World” where four tons of silver a month are made into jewelry and other works of art. In the late 1920s, the charm of this colonial hillside town attracted William Spratling, a North American architect, writer and artist, and his charisma in turn made Taxco “the haunt of Bohemian American artists and literati.”
Since 9/11 they’ve been hit hard. These are a proud, hardworking people who are very devout in their spirituality and commitment to their families. This is the first of a series of images captured in Taxco as well as Cacalotenango. I got to the later by paying a private driver to transport me there. Coming back I was blessed by having made friends with two Univision TV cameramen who’d managed to have a police truck at their disposal.
Cacalotenango is a small agricultural town in the mountains about one hour west of Taxco. The semana Santa Good Friday festivities and passion play are acted out authentically. The whippings, flagellations and crucifixion actually occur live in front of spectators who are warned to stay clear of the action to avoid getting hurt. True to form, the crowds (and the photographers) were constantly being harassed, pushed and shoved by the Roman centurions who were clearing the way for the procession along the “Via Dolorosa”.
At one point, a bullwhip lash meant for “Jesus” actually hit me. I didn’t really get hurt but (in my mind :~) I fancied myself an “artist-penitent” of sorts as I roasted in the hot sun running up and down a wide area of hills and steep walkways trying to stay close to the action.
Let me tell you, this was as real an enactment as can be put on short of death. According to an indigenous penitent, who became a friend, the crucifixion was real on both hands though the feet were tied in place. As I followed the Christ figure through various phases of torture, defilement and physical injuries, there was no doubt he was actually experiencing incredible suffering, exhaustion and pain.
As a semi-lapsed Catholic convert and human being I was extremely moved by the devotion of the participants and spectators who were able to relive the suffering, sacrifice and selflessness of this event.
A “penitente” told me this suffering was offered prayerfully for the wellbeing and healing of themselves, their families and communities. Beyond this was also an offering for national and world peace.
As an example, this indigenous “penitente” told me that he was praying for peace in Iraq and for the safety of American soldiers. Although I found these practices to be extreme and outside of my frame of experience, there was nothing fanatical or pathological about the people choosing to do this. They presented as very intelligent, discriminating, balanced and kind.
I got the sense that they were at peace with themselves and very centered. They seem to go into ecstatic or meditative states that defy ones concept of human endurance and self healing. I was told elderly diabetics have healed completely after deep flagellations with lead tipped whips after exhausting processions of many miles.
About 36 hours after severe self flagalation with with metal tipped whips, my friend's back appeared to have only a slight purplish hematoma with unbroken skin. I accidentally touched it when we hugged and he did not feel any pain........ Had I not seen this, I wouldn't have believed it possible.
To be honest, I don’t yet quite know what to make of all this, but I’m left with a deep sense of respect and admiration for their selfless devotion and spiritual dedication.

Italien / Südtirol - Seiser Alm und Schlern
(Wikipedia)
The Schlern (German pronunciation: [ʃlɛrn]; Italian: Sciliar [ʃiˈljar]; Ladin: Sciliër; 2,563 m) is a mountain of the Dolomites in South Tyrol, Italy. The peak at the north west end of the mountain (left, in the image at right) was first ascended in July 1880 by Johann Santner. It is named the Santner Spitze in his honour.
The Schlern dominates the villages of Seis am Schlern and Völs am Schlern, and the summit can be reached following the circular route marked with the number 1 from both villages.
At 1,700 metres (5,577 ft), there is the Schlernboden inn and on the summit plateau is the Schlernhaus inn 2,457 metres (8,061 ft), both open from 1 June to 15 October. The highest summit is the Petz with 2,564 metres (8,412 ft).
The Schlern is sung of in the Bozner Bergsteigerlied as one of South Tyrol's landmarks. Its characteristic profile appears on the Der Schlern - Zeitschrift für Südtiroler Landeskunde (Magazine for South Tyrolean Regional Studies) and the logo pressed into Loacker's wafer biscuits.
