Cause ya know... it's the last day of September. :P

This is a pretty common scene during the elk rut. A couple of satellite bulls sparring. Since they aren't challenging for dominance, this activity is primarily an exercise in preparation for when they are ready to do so. It's fairly rare for these practice bouts to get very intense...why risk injury when there is no reward to the victor?

Taken in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada.

Heavy winter rains create seasonal creeks that cascade down hillsides in unexpected places. This one was off OR-99 south of Oregon City.

With the recent onset of true, winterlike temperatures in our area, the thistle sock has seen an increase in activity. Seems there's at least one or two Goldfinches on it whenever I look outside.

However, on this rather rainy day, while doing some birdwatching, I noticed there were lots of Goldfinches on the thistle sock, so I grabbed a shot before they flew off. I caught eight of them in this shot.

As we await the arrival of Winter Storm Ezra tomorrow, it's a good thing the Goldfinches were practicing their clinging and sharing skills, as those skills may be put to the test over the next two days.

And yes, there's a squirrel photobomber in the background, scarfing up the whole peanuts I'd tossed out earlier.

Talk about bad life choices. I should have sacked Service Delivery and been a Vet!

Playing with kittens beats sitting on my ass.

I'm so disappointed though that it's not pin-point focus.

So what's I like about this is seeing how time spent on the lilac kitty shows compared to the brown one. I need to fine-tooth combe her outline in much more detail to soften the edges.

Can't wear this yet under "combat" conditions--too wintry out! But at least I can see if it works or not.

"Practice makes perfect". When not deployed, Tier 1 operators from the Special Operations Group spend countless hours on the range to perfect their shooting.

Since some years I jog regularly. But I always have problems to keep on track during the winter season. Because of the bad weather and the darkness I lose my motivation. So this year I have a plan. Some weeks ago I registered myself for the Berlin Half Marathon next March. I hope this will help me to stay motivated.

Currently I run 11 km (around 6miles) two times a week. I also bought new running shoes because my old ones were 14 years old and felt into pieces.

This photo shoot was one of the most difficult shoots I've ever done. It looks simple maybe but it was hard to take such a close up and getting the sharpness, the focus and the pose of my feet which I had in my mind. Also I always had to make a break because other runners interrupted me perpetually. I took 350 pictures and I'm still not one hundred percent happy with this picture.

First time taking the Phantom 4 Pro+ out for ferroequine pursuits, with the intention of capturing the 'purple boi'. If only I'd taken it a split second earlier...

Fifty years ago I started learning how to type on one of these. I failed. I hated it. Mistakes couldn't be fixed, and I made many mistakes. Correction tape was invented. I used it liberally. Eventually, a high-tech typewriter was invented-- one that displayed text before it hit the page, giving the typist a chance to backtrack-- if she caught the mistake in time. I bought one of these expensive machines immediately. I persevered. Eventually I learned to type, but never well and never fast, until I bought my first computer in the year 2000. Wow! Such speed! Such corrective actions so easily taken! I got fast at typing and fast at correcting. Now I am actually good at it. Better late than never.

I'm not much for the crowds around an air show anymore, probably never have been. But the coolness of military jets is too strong to miss so I go to practice on the afternoon before. This year the Cleveland Air Show has the USAF Thundbirds. They flew directly in from Nellis and practiced a few maneuvers including several of these opposing passes. That gave me a chance to practice too. They're moving just a little bit faster than the trains that are usually in my viewfinder. I was real impressed with the camera's speed especially focusing; the photographer isn't as quick as he used to be. But got a few with planes in the frame. You see almost as much high end photography gear around planes as a railfan event, with a surprising number of crossover fans.

It took me about a week. A couple of hours a day, sometimes twice a day. Watching and studying this Kingfisher. Learning its routine. Where does it perch? How often does it dive for fish? (Sometimes only once an hour.) How far does it dive from its perch? Which direction does it fly? I processed all the behavioral information, now it was time to work on technique. Which focus mode? How do I time the shutter release? What settings, and much, much more. Then it was trial and error and error and error. A couple of "almost got it". Finally, late in the afternoon, on the last day of July, success. Belted Kingfisher coming out of the water with a fish.

I got to catch a bit of rehearsal while touring the historic Teatro La Fenice opera house in Venice. I think the director was the woman in the hooded jacket standing close to the stage. She moved around the theater a lot and seemed very intense and passionate. The performers preserved their voices for the show and sang quietly.

Come and join us!

A little practice goes a long way. While I haven't been doing much practice in the saddle this past week because of spraining my shoulder, I've still managed to get some training done with the baby boy. He's been worked in a Pessoa to encourage him to work deep, because as a big, long, horse who has been used to thundering around on his forehand, he needed to work more on rocking onto his hindquarters and engaging properly underneath. I've also been free-jumping him over cavaletti, particularly focusing on bounce jumps for him, because nothing teaches a horse to get back onto his hindquarters and stay there like having to jump a grid.

It seems to have paid dividends, with our practice session at Evergarden over the jump course coming in at what I think is a very respectable 62.09. I've no idea how it compares to everyone else, but I think it's around the fastest Foxtrot and I are capable of completing the course - in this case, I think his being as tall as he is works against him, as the distances in some of the double elements are a bit more than a bounce, and a bit less than a stride. With a smaller horse, you might get a stride in, which can help your horse center himself, but I think for Foxtrot, I'd have to ask for a longer, shallower, jump on the first element to land him in bounce distance for the second elements.

Either way, I'm super proud of the progress Foxtrot has made in such a short period of time, and I'm excited to see how he improves with more time to train him.

I am practicing my stretches, I need to be able to place my hands flat in front again!

Evey and I practicing for the race tomorrow!

I'm still practicing on my focusing, especially on film. I haven't played with these lenses for ages
