....or why my brain hurts! The bottle on the left is filled with air at the same pressure inside and out at Refugio Amazonas, about 200m ASL. The one on the right was sealed with air at the pressure at Cusco, about 3400m ASL, and then carried down to Refugio Amazonas. The reduced volume gives you some idea of just how much of what you take for granted is missing as you get higher. Simple, but effective demo.
Good old Peter (a friend from Melbourne who's since moved to Perth) and Ben had us around for dinner Sunday night. Decided to whip out the 30D + flash, and see what I could come up with. Practical Pete (as ever) was a willing model So Sunday night consisted of a mini photo-shoot, a lamb roast, many beers and some camera fun... good times!

The origin of the term is a practical joke where inexperienced campers are told about a bird or animal called the snipe as well as a usually preposterous method of catching it, such as running around the woods carrying a bag or making strange noises such as banging rocks together. Real snipe (a family of shorebirds) are difficult to catch for experienced hunters, so much so that the word "sniper" is derived from it to refer to anyone skilled enough to shoot one, which makes me a Sniper Photographer I guess...
This species of Snipe is a Wilson's Snipe. I found dozens of them in a local flooded field foraging for worms and insects. They are migrating through the area right now. Just like the Woodcock, they do an aerial courtship display which is pretty amazing. They make a winnowing sound made by air rushing through its stiff outer tail feathers as it dives from high in its display flight. The sound is produced mechanically (rather than vocally) by the vibration of the modified outer tail feathers, held out at a wide angle to the body, in the slipstream of a power dive.
I have heard/seen them do this at Goose Lake Prairie in past years. You hear them overhead before you locate them. Pretty tough to see them though as they are so small and so high in the air.
I modified the Popover dress in several ways. First,I used knits to make it flowy and comfortable. I sized it up a little for my 10 year old, and both lengthened it and added a flounce to make it a maxi dress. I omitted the ties, and made fitted straps with a wooden button. I left the raw edges of the hem and flounce exposed and put a little of the grey from the yoke into the flounce seam, for fun.

Practical Magic is the first brick and mortar scrapbooking store in Israel, and I finally visited it today! It's a gorgeous place up North, with lots of space for workshops, and even a sitting room for the men who tag along. ;-)
