Celebrity DBS 'Tug' 60074 powers under one of Stephenson's original 1830 Liverpool & Manchester Railway bridges enroute from Liverpool docks to Fiddlers Ferry power station with a train of imported coal. Alas all has changed in this view as the line is fully electrified and currently no coal is imported via Liverpool Bulk Terminal.

One of the best greasy spoons in the world!

Also, this was the first HDR I ever did.

If you've grown up, lived, or worked in Fort Wayne in the last 65 or so years, chances are you've eaten at Powers Hamburgers. And if that's the case, chances are you liked it. Powers is the epitome of a "greasy spoon" as far as diners are concerned, and has the killer food to back that up.

The menu? Simple and unchanged for decades: Small, handmade, ground chuck burgers cooked to order on a flattop grill before your very eyes. Get them with cheese, grilled onion, mustard, and ketchup if you like. They're served steaming on lightly toasted Aunt Millie's dinner rolls made right up the street at Perfection Bakeries. And you always get a fresh plate of food because no table in the place is more than 15 feet from the grill.

Growing up I had the privilege of going to Powers from time to time with my family. Eating downtown at places like Powers, Coney Island, Bill's Palace, the Tiny Tim Diner, and Cindy's was a regular treat and a very fond childhood memory of mine. Since then I've tried out White Castle, and to be perfectly honest, I just don't get what all the White Castle hype is about. Anyone who's ever had a Powerburger knows they're in a whole different league.

Recently I heard of talk of demolishing Powers with regard to the ongoing "Harrison Square" stadium project. Rumor has it a later phase of the master plan shows it as an empty grass lot. This is all innuendo of course, and as such may or may not actually be true. But as I sat and thought about it, Fort Wayne losing Powers is tantamount to an encyclopedia losing a whole letter-volume.

I really hope this city, with its emphasis on "Downtown Improvement", doesn't lose sight of its rich history in places like Powers. Downtown Improvement is more than just tearing down old stuff and building new. They would do the community a tremendous disservice by forcing the closure of this downtown institution all because a few tenants in some posh new condos don't like to look over a diner.

I submit that Powers is as "Fort Wayne" as Don Halls, the Old Fort, the Roller Dome, the Perfection Bakeries sign, Freimann Square, and the statue of Anthony Wayne himself. I've eaten at that counter with people from every walk of life: politicians, pastors, prostitutes, media faces, cops, criminals, rich businessmen, bag ladies, and railroad vagrants. Black, white, Latino, rich, poor, old, young, gay, straight, drunk, sober, high, angry, nice, republican, democrat, Christian, Catholic, Jew, Muslim, pagan... As far as eateries go, Powers is more than little morsels of heaven on a platter.

It is the Great Equalizer of its patrons.

Powers Rocks.

The whole time I was growing up in Quinnesec we had a pair of Antoine - Green Bay freights, trains 936 and 937. Something wasn't right when I heard a westbound late morning on this day so I headed for the tracks to investigate. Turns out that trains 936-937 were now running out of Escanaba and we were now being served by a daily except Sunday Powers turn out of Antoine seen here westbound at Quinnesec with the 822-1485 on September 1, 1978.

Maxine, Bianca, and Trevor's mother. Sophia Beverly-Powers is a business woman on the go. She's completely unaware of the goings-on in her children's lives as she's far too busy with her costemics company. Sophia was on the business track ever since she was a child. Her parents owned 'Beverly Cosmetics' and passed the business down to their only child Sophia. A family was never in Sophia's business plan. But she fell in love and had three kids. Even as she started her family she never lost sight of her main goal, to keep 'Beverly Cosmetics' at the very top of the cosmetics industry.

When I first thought up Maxine, Bianca and Trevor's mom, I imagined her a lot like my mom. A stay at home mom who was always thinking up some nutty project to work on. But as the character evolved in my mind, I figured what better way to exaggerate my mom's drive to work on something, than to make her a hardcore business woman? But then the question became, what kind of business does she own? Taking a page out of the Fashion Royalty dolls, I made it a cosmetics company.

Sophia wasn't going to get the doll treatment until my friend Lynda (at the My Scene Hangout) posted about how Jem heads on Barbie bodies look like the grown up versions of My Scene dolls. So I bought a damaged Glitter N Gold Jem doll on eBay, had Jennfer reroot her in the same brown as the Maxine and Bianca dolls. Then I had Rachael repaint her using 'Getting Ready' Chelsea as inspiration. I put her on a tan volks body and got her an orange Barbie suit. And just like that, Maxine's mom was brought to doll life.

Notorious bushranger of the 1870s, Harry Power used this natural vantage point to look out for approaching police.

From the Australian Dictionary of Biography online:

" Henry (Harry) Power (1820-1891), bushranger, also known as Johnson, was born at Waterford, Ireland. He was transported for seven years in 1840 for stealing a pair of shoes, and arrived at Hobart Town in the Isabella on 21 May 1842. He received a ticket-of-leave in November 1847 and certificate of freedom in September 1848, and then moved to the Port Phillip District. He became a horse-dealer at Geelong, but was attracted by the gold discoveries. Stopped by two troopers at Daisy Hill, near Maryborough, in March 1855 on suspicion of horse-stealing, he wounded one of the police. A week later he was arrested whilst attempting to cross the Murray River and was sentenced on 25 September 1855 to thirteen years on the roads.

Confined to the hulk Success, Johnson was implicated with Captain Melville and others in the murder of Owen Owens and John Turner on 22 October 1856, but was found not guilty. After two years and a half in the hulks, he was transferred to Pentridge stockade. As Power he escaped in 1862, and lived at Middle Creek in the Ovens District, where he was assisted by the Kelly, Quinn and Lloyd families. Arrested on a charge of horse-stealing, he was sentenced at Beechworth on 19 February 1864 to seven years on the roads.

Power again escaped from Pentridge on 16 February 1869. He was assisted briefly by Ned Kelly, who was then 13, but the arrangement proved unsatisfactory and thereafter Power operated independently. He held up the mail-coach at Porepunkah on 7 May and another coach on the Longwood-Mansfield Road on the 22nd. These were the first of over a year's depredations, during which Power claimed to have committed over 600 robberies.

In September the Victorian government offered a reward of £200, soon increased to £500, for Power's arrest; as a result he moved to New South Wales. He soon returned to Victoria where police efforts to capture him proved fruitless until he was arrested on 5 June 1870 by Superintendents Nicolson and Hare, who with Sergeant Montford and a black tracker, surprised Power in his hide-out (Power's Lookout) overlooking the Quinn property on the King River. The police were led there by James Quinn, who received the reward of £500. Power was sentenced at Beechworth to fifteen-years hard labour on three counts of bushranging and was again held at Pentridge.

In 1877, after accounts of Power's ill health by the 'Vagabond' in the Argus, he was released on the application of several women, including Lady Janet Clarke. He worked on the Clarke property at Sunbury until he became a guide of the hulk Success in 1891. His body was found in the Murray River; he died 'on or about 11 October 1891 … near Swan Hill from drowning … there is nothing to show how he came into the river'.

Power was a fearless and daring rider and bushman, but never killed police or his victims. He broke from prison several times, defied the police in the Ovens District for a decade and was finally convicted through an informer."

As we do art we always use the powers within our selfs. So lets push them as far as we can. Have a nice powerful weekend.

Father and son collaboration

Our photographic art is a kinetic motion study, from the results of interacting with my son A.J and his toys.

He was born severely handicapped much like a quadriplegic. On December 17,1998. Our family’s goal has always been to help A.J. use his mind, even though he has minimal use of his body.

A.J. likes to watch lights and movement. One of the few things he can do for himself is to operate a switch that sets in motion lights and various shiny, colorful streamers and toys that swirl above his bed.

One day I took a picture of A.J. with his toys flying out from the big mobile near his bed like swings on a carnival ride. I liked the way the swirling objects and colors looked in the photo.

I wanted to study the motion more and photograph the whirling objects in an artful way, I wanted my son A.J. to be a part of it. After all, he’s the one who inspires me. When A.J. and I work together on our motion artwork, A.J. starts his streamers and objects twirling, I take the photographs.

Activating a tiny switch might not seem like much to some, but it’s all A.J. can do. He controls the direction the mobile will spin, as well as when it starts and stops. The shutter speeds are long, and sometimes, I move the camera and other times I hold it still.

I begin our creation with a Nikon digital camera. Then I use my computer with Photoshop to alter the images into what I feel might be an artistic way. Working with Photoshop, I find the best parts from several images and combine them into the final composite photograph. I consider the finished work to be fine art. The computer is just the vehicle that helps my expressions grow.

I take the photographs and A.J. adds the magic. It’s something this father and son do together. After I’ve taken a few shots, I show him the photos in the back of the camera. When the images are completed, I show him from a laptop. He just looks. He can’t tell me whether or not he likes the images, but he’s always ready to work with me again.

It offers me my only glance into A.J.’s secret world. We’ve built a large collection of images and I hope the motion and color move you as much as they do me.

A.J. inspires me to work harder to understand my life in the areas of art, photography, people, spirituality, and so much more. He truly sets my mind in motion and helps me find the beauty in everyday things.

Sometimes the worries and stresses of life can consume and trap you. Reach out to what magic heals and gives you peace.

I am grateful for the process of creation that allows me to express myself. I have used this medium time and time again to heal when hurt and to celebrate when happy. The last few weeks have been rather emotional, haunted by memories and a tough decision to make. Creating this image was very healing for me.

Consolidated PB4Y-2 Privateer (c/n 44094)

Hawkins & Powers Aviation

Fairbanks-Fort Wainwright Army Airfield (FBK/PAFB)

25 June 1986

The PB4Y-2 was a navalized version of the B-24 Liberator, and more than 700 were built by Consolidated between 1943 and 1945. This particular frame was built in 1945 for the US Navy as BuAer 60260, and later flew with the US Coast Guard before being retired in 1956.

In 1969 the aircraft was acquired out of storage by Greybull, Wyoming-based Hawkins & Powers Aviation as N7620C, and converted to tanker 123. As such it was seen based at Fort Wainright for the summer, on lease to the Alaska Bureau of Land Management.

N7620C continued service with H & P until July 2002, when it was lost in a tragic accident. During a firefighting operation near Estes Park, CO, both wings folded up and broke off, after which the fuselage broke in half and crashed into the ground. The 2 crew on board were killed. The accident was attributed to fatigue cracking in the left wing's forward spar, which led to an in-flight structural failure.

Super Amigos! I always thought the sculpt and proportions on those Super Powers figs were really nice. My uncle collected most of these back in the day. Does that carded Cyborg price sticker say $4000? I've seen similar figs on Ebay for upwards of $1700.

My wife and I went to our favourite vintage toy store the other day and I took some pics of some of the toys for sale (there were many more cabinets I didn't photograph but will next time).

The four eternal powers: fire, water, air and earth are the basis of our world. All these together create a genuine wonder - nature.

Well after a bricklink order and a Shapeways order I've finally made a self-moc I'm truly proud of. In truth I've had this new version built for quite a while, but kept forgetting or stalling to take photos. I figured it was time to shed the Hero factory name and come up with something original. I finally managed to build an ice sword I'm happy with, and now he can holster both of them. His color blocking is much more simple and focused, and I love the new mask (It's the Inorganic Iden by Red Star Forge on Shapeways). He's also got poseable fingers, which I 100% copied from Logan McOwen's Hydraxon.

This is what I was shooting for:

1. Phenomenal cosmic powers

2. Superheroic abilities

3. Awesome glowy blue fire visor

My wife took one look at it and told me it reminded her of what a headache feels like.
