Here’s a better view of the upper level exterior entrance, which as I noted earlier in this album faces north (unlike the lower level exterior entrance, which faces east). We’ll see more of the exterior in Saturday’s set; I just simply scheduled these post-closure photos to upload before the pre-closure ones were finished (oops!).

The façade looks like it needs a good powerwashing, although I’m certain all that grime has been there for some time now, and didn’t just magically accumulate in the four days after the store closed when I took these pictures, haha! Directly out of view behind me, meanwhile, is one of the entrances into the mall proper, the tower for which you may have already seen reflected in the windows in either of the two previous pictures.

WEEK 2 – Southaven Gordmans Liquidates Again (I)

Another thing that Stage did to the Gordmans façade here upon the store’s initial reopening in 2017 was to give the thing a much-needed powerwashing. It had gotten to look pretty grody by the first time Gordmans gave up the ghost, haha! The crew that did the job, DeSoto County Pressure Washing, even showcases the before-and-after as a front-page example on their website, that’s how much of a difference it made. Unfortunately, three years later, the façade was beginning to look more like its earlier self again than its nice, clean 2017 self… I guess this style of Gordmans building just wasn’t made to go without regular maintenance!

Bondo on the roof. Silver duct tape on the sides, like bandages on a malignant tumor. Bungee cords tying the trunklid down.

If anyone treated a child like this, DCFS would step in. For animals, PETA and the ASPCA. What about owners who let their cars get in this kind of sorry shape? Even if it has to sit outside in a Chicago winter, take it to a self-service carwash and powerwash the salt off!

One reason the blue Caprice looks like it does is that when it was new, she got it Ziebarted. Once a week during every winter, my Mom would have it hand-washed, making sure they got the undersides with a power spray. after every winter, she would take it to the body shop and have any little nicks and scratches taken care of before they started spreading.

Yes, it cost money. How expensive would it be to fix all this internal and external rust damage? And you can't just run out and buy a full-size, V8, body-on-frame car anymore; nobody makes them! GM stopped in 1996 and Ford dumped the Crown Vic last year.

The fact that this one's still running just proves how tough American cars, and traditional big American cars especially, really are.

WEEK 26 – Southaven Gordmans Liquidation, Set III

So there you have it: back outside for my final picture of the Southaven Gordmans while in operation :( Well... besides this one, anyway. And I suppose I should clarify “while it was in operation the first time.” As I've reiterated several times since the news that the store would be reopening came out, I definitely have my reservations over how the store's second incarnation will be received. But even disregarding all of those, I can't deny that I'm glad to see some new life breathed into this store (even if it is just a bit of a resuscitation instead, haha!). This rather dreary view (with the need for a façade powerwashing clearly evident) has now transformed into this, and I'm interested to see the results...

UPDATE: l_dawg2000 was able to make it to the grand reopening day, and has already posted a few pics here (then here and scrolling right); watch out for more from him in the future. I, too, was able to visit the store yesterday afternoon. I hope to post my photos in the fall so they don't get too out of date, haha! In the meantime, the comments at l_dawg's four current shots detail some of the biggest changes, if you're too impatient to wait to see for yourself ;) Oh, and while I have you, might as well link to my latest blog post as well! For now, next week – headed to another Southaven store that has had the privilege of reopening several times... (not a true teaser photo, but guesses are welcome!)

On this particular night, everything went wrong for taking candids. From the mall where I was shooting closing early to a homeless guy demanding to see my pictures (to check he wasn't on them - he wasn't), to the light going faster than I thought, to the cleaners powerwashing near me and driving people away from the sidewalk, this night had a lot of challenges.

I think I still got a few decent shots, though!

Hi and thanks for joining us for this monumental entry to the countdown of the Walt Disney World Top 30 Must Sees, the countdown that focuses on the top 30 things that Sarah and I are looking forward to doing on our August trip to Walt Disney World. Just what awaits us on this historic occasion as we break into the "teens" of the countdown, you ask? Only the 19th most anticipated thing at Walt Disney World!

Early to rise? Why not head over to the Magic Kingdom, where you can participate in the "E-Ticket Dash" each morning at the park's Rope Drop! Just be sure to wear a helmet...

The Welcome Show ends, and the turnstyles begin flowing. You insert your ticket, press your thumb to the biometric scanner. Nothing. You quickly insert your ticket again, mindful of the individuals to your left and right who are slowly trickling in before you. Bingo. As you walk briskly onto Main Street, you hear the area music, and see the beautiful Castle looming in the distance. You get chills. You stop briefly to take it all in, smelling that sweet magic in the air. As you snap a couple of photos, you realize you must hurry along if you want to be there first. Stiff-arm that tall lanky dog ("Aww, Schucks" he says as you speed past him).

The other "dashers" are heading the same way as you. Luckily, you've been training for this all summer, and are in peak Disney-shape. Juke to the left past a dad frantically pushing a stroller, yelling "WHERE IS DUMBO?!" You're in the clear. As you distance yourself from the bulk of the crowds, you enter Frontierland. Dart to the right, where you enter the boardwalk. Don't walk too quickly now, the planks are still damp from last night's powerwash. Now you see no other guests, and only a few Cast Members. Your heart rate rises even further, as you soak in the atmosphere together. Then you look up seeing the Twin Peaks of Frontierland as you hear the delightful instrumental twang of "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" play in the background. You've arrived. Now, which to ride first?!

Such are the typical thoughts racing through our heads when Sarah and I enter the Magic Kingdom on a typical morning (well, perhaps with just a smidge of dramatic embellishment). Starting out the teens in our Top 30 countdown is racing through Frontierland at rope drop. The Magic Kingdom definitely has the best atmosphere at rope drop, and for those reasons described above, Frontierland is our favorite place to be right as the park opens. It's an experience that has few rivals, and one we look forward to greatly!

. . . about powerwashing the deck

sure could use a powerwash

Its been a scorcher of week here in Scotland. The other day hit 30 degrees which is practically unheard of, but it has been very humid which is pretty unpleasant (especially when you've been stuck in the office like me until goodness knows what time at night. Even worse - my office window looks right across the outdoor pool of the Sheraton Grand Hotel - just to rub it in!)

I've spent my evenings in the garage painting the new garden furniture with a protective treatment (3 coats!! ugh). Today was spent powerwashing the patio, path and wall in readiness for the furniture going out.

I'm pooped now and the clouds are rolling in. All I want is a bit of sunshine so I can enjoy the fruits of my labour, but what do you know....the rain has just started. *sigh*

I guess the next big task is to try and sort out the lawn which is suffering from a combination of heavy clay soil, poor drainage and scorching heat.

What better person to hose down your house than a Fireman? Actually, there wasn't any fire, Oliver is a Fireman and works at the Fire Station down the road from here. He has a Power Washing business. We get a lot of moss and algae clinging to the homes in this area due to our close proximity to Cayuga Lake.
