Ohau A is a hydro station located in the Mackenzie Basin, South Canterbury, New Zealand. It has four 66 megawatt generating units, and a generation output of up to 264 megawatts.
The Ohau A power station is located at the end of the manmade Pukaki canal. The Pukaki canal joins with the Ohau canal to consolidate the water flows from Lake Ohau and Lake Pukaki.
Ohau A was the second hydro station to be built on the Upper Waitaki hydro scheme. The Waitaki hydro scheme is made up of eight hydro stations on the Waitaki River in the South Island.
During construction of Ohau A, approximately two million cubic metres of rock and gravel was excavated from the northern bank of the Ohau River.

The explanation: They are erecting a 90-meter high mast which will measure weather data for comparison with the generated output from the two new, gigantic windmills. (See earlier photos). The mast foundation is three tubes driven into the seabed, around which an island of stones has been created - all this will be topped by a concrete platform. The mast will be erected on the concrete platform by a crane from the rig.

This isn't such a great pic, but I included it just to give an idea of the heat haze that made long zoom shots pretty redundant. Despite the sun though it didn't feel this warm due to the constant cool breeze from the coast (hence why this site was chosen), but the photo of a long zoom shot shows that actually there was a lot of heat shimmer and haze even though we didn't feel it at the time due to the breeze, so thought I'd include this shot.
