The historic Rideau Canal ( which is part of the larger Rideau Waterway) opened in1832 and can be found in Ottawa, Ontario. It has been in continuous operation since opening. Originally built to move freight, today it is used as a recreational waterway. The series of locks through the city of Ottawa are still completely run by hand and muscle power. I imagine the lock staff would have arms like Popeye by the end of the season.
The glow of an LCD illuminates the power button. The lighted power switch isn't supposed to be aqua, it was supposed to glow medium blue.
Trying to shave in the morning can be difficult when you can hardly see passed your sleep filled eyes and there is a morning power failure that means one side of your face is in shadow..
The worst thing about the power cut though, is that our shower relies on an electric pump filling the water tank on our roof.. My nice warming shower became more of a morning trickle barely washing me.. thankfully I was the first up and in the shower this morning, so i got the best of the water pressure before it died...

In Euharlee, Georgia. This coal-fired plant, owned by Georgia Power, has the largest generating capacity of any coal plant in the United States (at least according to Wikipedia). In 2006, this plant was the largest emitter of sulfur dioxide in the U.S.

The sunset was nice tonight. The clouds were varied and thus added a beautiful texture to the scene.
I was torn between getting to my destination after an extended time off at work, and stopping, switching to my ultra wide lens and grabbing me some sunset landscape. I compromised, and kept on going, but had my camera, the Pentax K20D, at the ready.
I even rolled down my window, preparing to grab some quick sky, as I was rolling along.
Being prepared & observant paid off.
I noticed the electrical substation a few blocks in front of me, and recalled my fascination with the wires and girders against the sky from past trips. I had noted on my mental scratch pad, that the substation would be an interesting photograph one day.
I pulled my camera off the car seat, and laid it across my left arm. Then focused on infinity, and, as the substation passed by, fired off a quick succession of grabs.
I knew that the sunset sky and clouds would give me something, but in processing the frames, I was hit again by something which I had not noticed, but the all-seeing eye of the camera lens had.
The Birds.
Hundreds of birds, on every girder, nearly every wire, and I suspect, every safe surface in the electrical framework.
I notice also that I caught one in mid-flight, as if they were a late comer to the meeting.
Again, my trusting of that inner intuition paid off with the dividend of extra interest in the photo.
Thanks to my fine-feathered friends.
