Jonathan Reeves —brewer for Port City Brewing Company— stands next to the rented diesel-powered generator that provided emergency power essential to cooling the brewery's beer, some still fermenting and other finished in the brewery's tanks.
The brewery lost electrical power Friday evening, 29 June, during a derecho, and did not re-gain power until 6 days later, Thursday, 5 July 2012.

This photo was taken during a party at the brewery, still without power, on Tuesday 3 July: a celebration of a 1 July law change in Virginia —allowing breweries to sell pints of beer to visitors— the opening of a new tap room, and a release party for its new summer seasonal beer, Downright Pilsner.

Power outages can happen in any season. You might be vulnerable if your home lacks a backup power generator. There are many devices to help you with this. Home solar generator systems are one of the best ways to provide power. Whether you’re in a location prone to storms or want extra backup power for your home, a solar generator can provide you with the energy you need. Here we will explain how to choose the best home solar generator systems.
1. Battery Capacity
Home solar generator systems have an energy storage system made of rechargeable batteries. Knowing how many hours the generator can provide power with these batteries is essential. The more hours, the more work you can get done when you have it working. You should also know how many watt-hours are available from a full charge and discharge cycle. This will tell you how much power it will provide in a day and how long your backup would last for one complete charge cycle. Standard lead-acid, deep-cycle batteries are used in most systems. If you need more battery capacity, look for a deep cycle battery with a higher Ah (amp hour) rating. These are more expensive because they last longer.
2. Power Rating
The power rating will tell you how much power the generator can provide for your needs. It is calculated in watts per hour. A watt is a measure of a device’s power and is the mathematical constant that describes this power. The more Watts an energy source can carry, the more efficient it is at transferring energy between its source and another place. A higher rating will extend the time you can use your system. The ideal watt rating depends on how much work you need to complete. If you want to power a refrigerator and a few lights, a solar generator with a low rating will suffice. When calculating energy requirements, remember that appliances need more power at startup than when running. Before making your purchase, check the power rating on the device’s power consumption rate.
3. Charge Controller
A charge controller is a device used in battery-based energy storage systems. It can direct power from the generator to the batteries, allowing them to recharge. It reverses the flow of power at low input voltages. This protects your batteries when you get a lot of cloudy weather, and they start losing charge. Charge controllers come in different varieties. Your generator might have a built-in charge controller that you can control with an extension cord. You should also know if the controller has voltage monitoring. If it doesn’t, you will need to buy an external one so you can monitor the voltage levels of your batteries. Check for a programmable timer to shut off the power when the batteries are charged.
4. Portability
The size determines how mobile it is. You will have to lug it around if it is intended to provide power during a disaster. The system’s weight should be proportional to whether it is designed for stationary or portable use. You will have to consider where you will put it. For convenience, you should look for a generator with wheels or something to set it on to move it from place to place. It should be easy to hook up. The plugs and cables should be long enough to install where needed.
5. Ease of Use
Installation of solar generators can be quite a challenge for homeowners. Most of them come with a guide you need to read before using. Reading instruction manuals for any appliances you plug into is also a good idea. While most systems come with self-explanatory manuals, you will still need to know how to use the controller and the other equipment connected to it. If there are multiple users in your home, it would be best if everyone could operate the system. This will also be more convenient if you have guests that need to stay in the house during a disaster. If you have to change batteries on your own, choose an easy model to get into and take care of.
6. Safety Features
You must ask about safety features when looking for the best home solar generator systems. Some of these apply to the whole system, and others are unique to a single unit or accessory. Look for systems with safety features that are specially designed for outdoor use. These include weatherproofing and protection from electromagnetic interference (EMI). Another safety feature worth looking for is a line conditioner. This protects your system’s direct current (DC) output by diverting excess voltage to the ground, preventing problems with voltage drop before it reaches your batteries and other equipment like lights.
7. Price
Prices will depend on design, options, and accessories. Consider the device’s value and how much you will save on your electricity bill. If you do some research, you can easily find a solar generator for your home or workplace at an affordable price. You may have to sacrifice some features if you want a budget system. Some affordable generators only have basic charge controllers and limited protection against dangerous electrical surges. Others may have inefficient solar panels or batteries that quickly lose their charge. Using highly efficient components leads to better performance and fewer battery replacements down the road. You can save money by buying a solar generator system that does not require purchasing extra accessories to set it up.
8. User Reviews and Opinions
It is always a great idea to look at reviews from actual users before you make your final decision. These may help you see how the generator works, how long it can power your appliances, and tell you about the experiences users have had with the product. If a unit has no user reviews online or if they are not positive, you might want to reconsider purchasing it. Go online and search for the latest reviews from bloggers and others who have used it. You can also search for the brand name or model number to see if there are any recent customer reviews. This information will help you make an informed decision when it comes to purchasing.
Take the time to research everything you need and compare features before you make your decision. If possible, try to test the product yourself before you purchase it. This will help you better understand how well it works and whether or not it will do what you need it to do. Check the fine print to see if any special offers can save you money on your purchase.

Church planter Wole Ajala has developed a new ministry he calls Beautiful Gate Church on Wheels. He has custom equipped a brightly decorated trailer with chairs and other equipment, plus a power generator he keeps in the back of his pickup. He can pull the trailer to a location and set up an instant church. This day, Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, he held a service in downtown Greensboro.
Plan Laos has provided dormitories for students in Pha Oudom. The dormitories are built in a simple but strong style and include basic needs such as bedding, kitchen, toilets and water, but not yet with electricity.
Being so remote, places like Pha Oudom dont have regular electricity, which means people have to rely on gasoline lanterns and torches come nightfall. This proved expensive until Plan facilitated the introduction of solar lanterns that have helped cut costs and also reduced the number of fires caused by gasoline lanterns.
