To Elbe 3.......

ELBE 3 – From Lightship to Lighthouse.

The Royal Waterways Inspectorate had the station ship EIDER built for the mouth of the Eider River. During World War I, it served as a lightship on the minefields of the North Sea. It then belonged to the Cuxhaven Waterways and Shipping Authority as the Mayor Abendroth. During World War II, it was stationed in the Baltic Sea. Afterward, it served as a lighthouse and pilot station at position ELBE 3 in the German Bight, the sea area with the highest traffic density in the world, until 1966 to the ELBE 3 position in the German Bight.

The steel sailing ship could be maneuvered in an emergency using storm sails. Initially, the lighthouse consisted of kerosene lamps; later, a diesel-powered generator and accumulators were installed for a more powerful electric light. The previously hand-operated fog horns were then replaced by a large fog horn.

The ELBE 3 has been moored in the Old Harbour since 1967.

It is the case that I hear these birds before I see them: the whirring, buzzing sound whose volume denotes the size of the flock. My friend Paul and I once crawled on our backs under a fence and then under some shrubs that were filled with many hundreds of these birds, and the sound was unreal - almost electric, like a power generator. Sadly, because they were finishing off the buckthorn berries, when they pooped on us (an inevitable consequence of our odd choice of spotting location) they stained Paul’s new winter coat.

Waxwings are in a very select group: they have no song as such. Instead, the buzzing trill is a call, designed to connect with the flock - as opposed to songs, which are ways to define territory and attract mates. Because Waxwings are always moving and following food, this has worked out for them.

We have both Cedar and Bohemian overwintering here in Ottawa, and finding these birds this late (I took this a few weeks ago) means they were sweeping the area for the last remaining berries. It was kind of a crummy spring day, cold and wet, but I thought this image worked out. Waxwings will generally feed in waves, often separated by days. They will grab the easiest fruit first, metaphorically the ‘low-hanging’ fruit, but actually the highest fruit. The truly low-hanging fruit is the last to be eaten, when they have exhausted the safer, higher berries. I waited for the bolder birds to drop down to the branch tips in search of the remnants.

The Golf Ball, in Kinross-shire, Scotland, is a now-inactive NATO spy base – or Intercontinental Ballistic Missile early-warning radar – built on the former Second World War airfield, RAF Balado Bridge, where Polish pilots trained on Hurricanes and Spitfires.

This former NATO base and ballistic missile warning radar built in 1985. Dubbed the Golf Ball for its white fibreglass dome, which housed a giant antenna, the 9-acre site is just 20 miles south of Edinburgh, and is being marketed as an adaptive reuse or redevelopment project for residential or commercial purposes. The radome is linked to the main equipment building by a corridor and doors built with enough concrete to withstand a nuclear, biological, chemical attack or even a zombie attack. Also included is the station mess, recreation and office facilities. The site could be completely redeveloped, or the existing structures could be put to new uses.

Opened by Princess Anne in 1985, the white fibreglass protective radome contains a large dish antenna which is still intact and could be rotated and elevated to point in any direction.

It was manned by soldiers from the Royal Corps of Signals until 2006.

The 6.12-acre site comes with a level of security that anybody purchasing a former Ministry of Defence owned satellite communications base would expect.

The entire compound is surrounded by a burglarproof double-layered security fence.

The golf ball is connected to the main equipment building by a corridor and has doors built to withstand a nuclear, biological or chemical attack.

The complex contains an additional emergency power generator room and an accommodation block which once housed the station mess, recreation, and office space.

There are also garages, diesel tanks and a sizeable guardhouse, with facilities including a kitchen and toilet.

RAF Balado Bridge was in use from March 1943 until 1957 and served as a satellite to Grangemouth as part of 81 Group. It was originally used as a base for Hurricanes and Spitfires during the Second World War and was a training site for Polish pilots.

A Slovak flatbed, Polish and Czech coaches, and a German carriage for oversize loads. That all in one special train, headed by SM31-021.

Every now and then there is a train heading out from Wrocław. On its hook is a power generator (they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes), which is headed for the harbour of Gdynia for further shipment abroad. The train takes the least used routes to not interfere with standard train traffic. The last part of the route usually leads via Czersk, Kościerzyna and Somonino (on the old coal mainline).

However, yesterday the train was routed differently. After a night spent in Chojnice, it set out in the early morning towards Czersk, and then further down the old Ostbahn towards Starogard Gdański, where it was to spend the night between 07.12 and 08.12.2024.

I was very happy to catch a train here because usually nothing really interesting uses the Ostbahn between Czersk and Tczew, and there are a few interesting spots to make use of here.

The pictured train was running as 553000 from Czersk to Pszczółki. In Pszczółki it will most likely wait until the coming night to make the last stretch to Gdynia. Here it is seen in very humid conditions, as it was arriving at Kaliska, to wait for an upcoming regional train from the other direction.

I must say that I'm personally extremely happy with this picture, must be one of my personal favorites of the last few months.

At the very beginning of spring SKPL did another transport of a power generator, once again with SM31-021. As always, the train picks rarely used routes, so as not to collide with other train traffic, because its max speed is drastically reduced (5km/h on switches), and it also needs to stop before any obstacles to check for clearance. Throughout this long journey, the crew could observe the nature come to life right before their eyes.

This picture shows the SKPL Cargo workhorse SM31-021 - one of around 9 SM31's remaining in service - hauling the TNS 553001 Kcynia - Kościerzyna. Having rested for the night before in Chojnice, it's bathing in the morning sun, while passing the old manor complex in Kruszka. It has left Chojnice more than 20 minutes before, averaging just over 20km/h. This was the 7th day of the train's journey, and on this short stretch it used the old German Ostbahn from Berlin to Königsberg

For the more curious ones - from my research the train's journey spans more than a week, like this:

Day 1 -

Night 1 - Wrocław Gądów - Oleśnica

Day 2 -

Night 2 - Oleśnica - Milicz - Jarocin

Day 3 -

generators are keeping us going

On one of the cold, yet snowless days in December of 2024, SKPL was tasked with a shipment of a power generator/transformer from Wrocław to the harbour in Gdynia - something the company does several times a year. SM31-021 was picked to run the train on the unelectrified sections of the route. In exception to most transports, this one didn't lead over Kościerzyna on the old coal trunk line, but rather continued on the old Ostbahn towards Tczew. I photographed the train on 7.12.2024 as it was on the section between Czersk and Czarna Woda, as TNS 553000 Czersk - Pszczółki.

The particularly humid weather made for an amazing spectacle of steam, which a keen eye will spot just behind the locomotive. It is not the classic exhaust smoke, but rather water from the hot air being burst out of the engine, immediately condensing into steam.

The Royal Prussian Eastern Railway, constructed in the second half of the 19th century, used to be one of Germany's most improtant rail lines, which has many interesting quirks to it. One of them is the fact, that around the second world war, there were plans for extending the throughput on the line by making it quadruple tracked, with two tracks heading each way. The traces of that can be seen only in very few spots, just like here, where the embankments were extended to handle all four of the planned tracks.

After world war two, the Soviet forces dismantled the second track on many parts of the former Ostbahn, and to this day the stretch between Gutowiec and Piła remains with just one track. The positioning of the semaphore seen to the right of the frame clearly demonstrates where the second track would be around 80 years ago.

The train is the famous "Skrajnia" with a power generator from the Dozamel factory in Wrocław, heading to the harbour of Gdynia for export (shipping overseas). Here it's headed by SKPL's SM31-021, running as TNS 553003 Kcynia - Kościerzyna and is seen departing from the station in Rytel, having crossed a WMB10 work train. The train is nwo starting its journey towards Czersk, where it would change the direction of travel.

Monochrome of Wind power Generator

Over the hilltop sits an industrial dynamo whose intentions are to provide an uncompromised supply of power this winter to parts of Texas.

The old Prussian Ostbahn (Berlin-Königsberg) is home to an unusually large amount of old guard houses. Although we seemed to find no appearent reason for it, the houses are scattered around the line in intervals of (in most cases) exactly 2 kilometers. Be it the middle of a forest or a field, there is always a small brick hut somewhere with a great vantage point on the track. They often used to host railroad crossings - sometimes for their own use exclusively.

From my experience, between Chojnice and Tczew, all of the brick huts are made out of the same blueprint. Many of them still carry the original milestone markings, put here by the Germans - the one on the right is numbered 261.

As you can see to the left of the frame, guard houses are not the only architectural curiosity, which you can find on the line. Other housing estates were built for the workers of the Staatsbahn, once again in the middle of nowhere. Passing along them while taking the train is really an interesting experience. All the neuances which you can notice and the history they carry create an unforgettable atmosphere, especially when taking into account that we are visiting one of the most spacerly populated areas in Poland.

One of the famous Ostbahn-guardhouses made for a background while we photographed SM31-025 of SKPL carrying a special transport of an electrical power generator, which is being carried to the harbour in Gdynia (as of now - 21.07 - the train should be waiting in Somonino for the night to fall, before proceeding to the harbour). Such transports happen roughly once a month and sometimes are the sole reason that some of the railway lines in western Poland remain open for traffic. Because of the large size of the generator, the train needs to use unelectrified railway lines in the middle of nowhere, aswell as slow down while passing any obstacle. Here the train is seen nearing Czersk, where it would turn around and shut down.

West Burton A Power Station. One of the few remaining coal powered generators in the UK but decommissioned in 2023. Demolition is scheduled to take place in 2024.

I'm glad that we're moving to cleaner forms of energy but I shall miss the sight of these towers when they are gone. They've been a landmark throughout my entire life.

SM31-025 is making its way out of the station Kościerzyna on the old coal mainline, at a snail's pace. On hook - the standard heavy power generator train from Wrocław to the harbour in Gdynia.

This train runs roughly once a month or so, sometimes with longer breaks, and is one of the last regular trains using the old unelectrified railway line 201, about which I once made a series of posts under the name 'The Polish coal-mainline'.

At the Santa Clara Ranch in South Texas which is a conservation easement of natural and native vegetation. It's surrounded by farm after farm with crops and wind power generators. It is important to keep areas natural and native to an area to provide an oasis for wildlife that has no choice but to adapt to humanity's whims.

SM31-025 has brought an oversize load train from Wrocław to Czersk, after a journey, which lasted more than a week. From here onwards, the train needs to flip the direction of driving, which requires a lot of shunting work to be done. The train, composed out of 4 wagons + the generator carriage must be rearranged so that, after the loco changes the direction, the composition of the train stays the same.

Here, the entire train is almost ready and SKPL's SM31 pushes the flatbed carriages and passenger coaches towards the wagon housing the generator, which is being transported to the harbour of Gdynia.

The title - Tow-Os - is an old train designation for cargo+passenger trains, which were common on local rail lines up until the 1990s, allowing to fit cargo inbetween passenger services aswell as making everything slightly more economical. This train seems to serve a simmilar purpose, as the passenger coaches transport workers needed for the transport of the generator and the flatbed wagons store additional parts needed for its operation.
