102.5 acres forest, trails, wetland, five lakes (owned by the Olin Corporation). The Hamden Land Conservation Trust hosts nature hikes here in spring and fall. The property was used during World War II for munitions testing. Bunkers used for storing gun powder can be seen along the trails. The 5 lakes on this property are home to many species of birds and the trails are lined with wildflowers in spring. This hidden gem is normally closed to the public.
This 1972 photo shows a woman sewing bags for cannon powder at Picatinny Arsenal. Picatinny began sewing powder bags in the early 1890s. Most likely, the first to do it was Mrs. Myron H. Cook, wife of the arsenal magazine keeper.
The first woman to appear on the regular payroll was Kathleen Fichter in March 1898. The demands of the Spanish-American War added ten more bag sewers the next month.
The going rate was $1.30 a day - the same wage paid to the men who loaded powder in the bags.
