This is a recipe for a Sweet Curry Powder, some might call it Madras Curry Powder. It has as much heat as you want it to, and you can increase the peppers to taste. I use it for my sweet curried chicken recipe.
There are a lot of spices that go into a good blend and at first it seems to be a fuss to make compared to just buying it premixed. But really the hardest part is just amassing so many ingredients. And finding a recipe to work from. I never would have tried it myself until one day I was making curry and ran out.... and somehow I had all the ingredients to make my own. I haven't been happy with any particular recipe on the internet so far, so I've been tweeking several to make the one I have listed below. I may yet do a few more adjustments, but I feel it close enough that it will work as a good base for any of you who'd like to try it yourself. There are so many curry recipes out there that none of them can be considered wrong or the recipe. Adjust to taste! Also, I'd love to hear opinions on any who've made their own.
Because these whole spices are so small and compact, it is almost the same measurement as ground - close enough to make no difference in most cases. I measured each of them after grinding and was surprised. So if you need to sub a spice due to not having it whole, use the measurements in brackets.
Curry Powder Recipe (in progress)
3 T whole cardamom seeds (3T)
3 T whole cumin seeds (3T)
3 T whole coriander seeds (2.5T)
3 T fenugreek seeds (2.5T)
2 tsp whole fennel seed (2 tsp)
1/2 cup turmeric powder
2 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tsp ground nutmeg
2 tsp ground ginger
2 tsp ground white pepper
2 tsp ground black pepper
2 tsp ground red pepper (like cayenne)
1/4 tsp ground cloves
Toast whole spices over medium heat in a heavy cast iron pan or a non stick pan. Keep the spices moving and be careful not to burn. Toast until fragrant (3-5 minutes). Let cool before grinding otherwise you'll get steam and sticking spices inside your grinder. Trust me on this.
You can also heat ground spices but be especially careful as it is much easier to burn and damage ground spices.
If you can, let the spice blend sit a couple days to meld the flavors together. I find the cumin stands out far too much at first grind, but it mellowed into the other spices once I let the blend sit.

Samples of six different anthotype dyes in powder (and root) form. All of these powders can be mixed directly with alcohol to produce active dyes.
From left to right, starting on the top row: Sandalwood, turmeric, spirulina, alkanet, madder root, and annatto.

Approx. 1mL of strontium carbonate, 1mL of sulfur, about 1mL sodium nitrate, 1mL of sugar and about 0.01mL of manganese carbonate was ground together and placed on top of a piece of chalcedony. It was ignited with a match and immediately burst into bright yellow flame which burned for a couple of seconds. This resulted in a hard grey melted substance that was quite luminescent.
This mixture was named "Gorn Powder" in reference to a Star Trek episode wherein an alien (the Gorn) was defeated using a mixture of a nitrate, sulfur and carbon (aka "black powder").

Cocoa powder makes a great soap additive. This was going into my egyptian musk soap to create a smooth tan color.

And in case you're wondering, yes that is frozen water falling ever so slightly from the sky. I believe this is the first of the season. The following morning would see an inch to an inch and a half of the white powder.
