When I moved to Florida it was a bit daunting to learn the names of all the new plants, birds and animals.
I like this one; it's self- explanatory.
Alta is closed today due to off-the-charts avalanche danger so here's a fun powder photo from yesterday.
I had the pleasure this afternoon of meeting up with one of my Flickr contacts whose work I greatly admire. Steve (aka Maxxsmart) and I met at the old California Powder Works factory in Hercules where they used to produce dynamite during the gold rush days. We decided to meet in the afternoon to do a little long exposure work. There are a ton of different options at this place, but it also gets a bit hard to isolate an image due to all the stuff that's laying around. I decided to focus most of my attention on this old pier.

Loads for the Alabama Power Company are heading north (RR W/B) to connect with the Black Hills Sub. There they will turn east towards Crawford Hill enroute to the deep south.
Sunset powder is sure a fine way to close out the day. And if you ski with Carl Simpson and Tara Simpson be sure to bring your flashlight because it's sure to be a day lived to it's full potential, plus some.
The Powder Mills were built in 1844, a factory for making gunpowder which was built on the open moor, not far from Postbridge. Gunpowder was needed for the tin mines and granite quarries then in operation on the moor. The buildings were widely spaced from one another for safety and the mechanical power for grinding ("incorporating") the powder was derived from waterwheels driven by a leat.
Now known as "Powdermills" or "Powder Mills", there are extensive remains of this factory still visible. Two chimneys still stand and the walls of the two sturdily-built incorporating mills with central waterwheels survive well: they were built with substantial walls but flimsy roofs so that in the event of an explosion, the force of the blast would be directed safely upwards. The ruins of a number of ancillary buildings also survive. A proving mortar—a type of small cannon used to gauge the strength of the gunpowder—used by the factory still lies by the side of the road.
