LIGHT BLOOM by HYBYCOZO is a limited-time exhibit where nature and light converge. This mesmerizing display invites you to explore the Garden transformed by stunning geometric light installations that illuminate the beauty of the desert landscape in a new way. As the sun sets, LIGHT BLOOM comes to life, casting intricate shadows and vibrant hues across the Garden. Wander the trails and let the enchanting installations transport you to a magical realm where the natural world meets the abstract.

HYBYCOZO is the collaborative studio of artists Serge Beaulieu and Yelena Filipchuk. Based in Los Angeles, their work consists of larger than life geometric sculptures, often with pattern and texture that draw on inspirations from mathematics, science, and natural phenomena. Typically illuminated, the work celebrates the inherent beauty of form and pattern and represents their ongoing journey in exploring the myriad dimensions of geometry. HYBYCOZO is short for the Hyperspace Bypass Construction Zone, a nod to their favorite novel (The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy) and was the title of their first installation in 2014. They continue to create under this name. In the novel earth was being destroyed to make way for a bypass. It lead Serge and Yelena to ask what it means to make art at a time where the earth’s hospitable time in the universe may be limited.

Q: Walk us through your creative process?

A: The focus of our creative process is to explore the intricate interplay between geometry, light, space and to inspire contemplation, wonder and a sense of place among our audiences. Geometry and pattern-making serve as the backbone of our creative expression. It is the framework through which we navigate the complexities of form, proportion and spatial relationships. Patterns, both simple and complex, have a profound impact on our perception and understanding of the world. They possess the ability to evoke a sense of order, balance and aesthetic pleasure. Pattern making and geometry offer us a means of storytelling and communication. These patterns serve as conduits for deeper exploration, provoking introspection and contemplation to uncover the underlying symbols embedded within the human psyche.

Q: What inspired the concept of LIGHT BLOOM?

A: Just as many cactus and desert plants have evolved to produce night-blooming flowers, adapting to their environment and thriving in darkness, our sculptures come alive after sunset, blossoming with light and transforming the night into a glowing landscape of art and geometry.

...simply an evergreen after a sprinkling of snow. Merry Christmas!

I spent alot of the final day like this too.

Massive dump of snow overnight. Lifts didn't open until 10:30....we almost gave up & headed out for an early Channel crossing instead.

Between 2ft & 3ft of powder all over the mountain. I managed to spend alot of my time buried face down in it... a bit like Chris here.

Falling in powder with a snowboard is a pain..... On a "good" fall, I end up faceplanting & then my legs come right over me & I end up the right way up, but just covered in snow. On a "bad" fall I end up head down in a hole with my feet & board above me with no way of righting myself.... More exhausting recovering than doing the actual boarding !

I think this is a powder Blue Gourami male and is a fresh water fish. They are a bit territorial and not very compatible.

A Winter storm dropped nearly 8 inches of fresh powder on most of Northern Virginia over the day on Thursday. Prompting schools and the Federal Government to shut down.

It also provided a good opportunity to go out and get a shot or two of train running through said snow.

Something very, very different from me today. A client (aka the wife) wanted some makeup photos, to hang, and this was one of the ideas we discussed; a couple of makeup brushes loaded with powder, creating a cloud as they brushed together (by no means unique).

This has been an extremely challenging shoot, and took a few attempts, over a couple of days to get right, and this isn’t necessarily the best of the bunch!

I set up in the garage, as I knew I was going to create a mess, and originally used my larger studio lights, but their flash duration was too long, resulting in movement blur. And so, I then went with my smaller strobes, set to minimum power, which provided not only a shorter flash duration, enabling me to freeze the motion, but also enabled me to fire in burst mode.

I also had to counter the problem of the powder staying up in the air long enough before it fell. The options to counter this, involved using a hairdryer blowing from beneath, and also having the brushes horizontal, rather than vertical. Each option provided pros and cons.

And of course there was the challenge to get the timing of the brushing to coincide with the trigger. And remembering to clean the stems of the brushes between each shot.

And what you see is, other than basic post processing, is what was shot, in a single take, with no additional AI guff!

So challenging but great fun!

It's been unbearably hot for most of the US these past few weeks of June/July. A lot of us cant wait for the cooler temps, myself included. Though Winter isn't my favorite season, this scene looks refreshing compared to current temps.

Macro Mondays - Powder

Cropped picture

KXCG rolls south through Powder Springs on the CG line.

The process in which the seeds of a tropical plant are selected, planted, grown, harvested, separated from the fruit that surrounds them, fermented, washed, dried, hulled, sorted, roasted, ground, and brewed is long and complex. Here we see hot water pouring onto the seeds (called beans, although they are not) after grinding into a coarse powder. A dark infusion, called "coffee" is the final result. A sip of fresh black coffee may not be enough to animate the dead but it certainly makes my day better.

The Powder House (Y Cwt Pwdr) dates to the mid-18th Century and takes its name from its original use as a store for the gun powder unloaded from ships for use in the local slate mines.. In approximately 1897, the then redundant gunpowder store was converted into a dwelling house.
