An Alta ski patroller, last weekend, on the job. Working in Little Cottonwood Canyon, one of the most avalanche-prone zones on the planet, means a lot of very hard and dangerous work. On the other hand, Alta ski patrollers get to make first tracks on some of the most-coveted in-bounds powder there is. And they deserve it.

Something very, very different from me today. A client (aka the wife) wanted some makeup photos, to hang, and this was one of the ideas we discussed; a couple of makeup brushes loaded with powder, creating a cloud as they brushed together (by no means unique).

This has been an extremely challenging shoot, and took a few attempts, over a couple of days to get right, and this isn’t necessarily the best of the bunch!

I set up in the garage, as I knew I was going to create a mess, and originally used my larger studio lights, but their flash duration was too long, resulting in movement blur. And so, I then went with my smaller strobes, set to minimum power, which provided not only a shorter flash duration, enabling me to freeze the motion, but also enabled me to fire in burst mode.

I also had to counter the problem of the powder staying up in the air long enough before it fell. The options to counter this, involved using a hairdryer blowing from beneath, and also having the brushes horizontal, rather than vertical. Each option provided pros and cons.

And of course there was the challenge to get the timing of the brushing to coincide with the trigger. And remembering to clean the stems of the brushes between each shot.

And what you see is, other than basic post processing, is what was shot, in a single take, with no additional AI guff!

So challenging but great fun!

It's been unbearably hot for most of the US these past few weeks of June/July. A lot of us cant wait for the cooler temps, myself included. Though Winter isn't my favorite season, this scene looks refreshing compared to current temps.

Another cracking evening out with a bunch of ne'er do well lightpainters, this time at Magpie Mine in Derbyshire. This is a powder house dating to 1840 where gunpowder was kept for blasting in the lead mine.

Thanks to Rob Bates for patiently posing; it was pointed out that we should have swapped Rob for a midget.....

We finally got a decent storm and it looks like another one is coming in, tomorrow. This is my boss, Alta Marketing Director, Brandon Ott, taking a turn in front of the camera. Man, I love a good powder day!

Macro Mondays - Powder

Cropped picture

The process in which the seeds of a tropical plant are selected, planted, grown, harvested, separated from the fruit that surrounds them, fermented, washed, dried, hulled, sorted, roasted, ground, and brewed is long and complex. Here we see hot water pouring onto the seeds (called beans, although they are not) after grinding into a coarse powder. A dark infusion, called "coffee" is the final result. A sip of fresh black coffee may not be enough to animate the dead but it certainly makes my day better.

Taken for Macro Mondays "powder".

Each shot fired by the USS Alabama’s 16-inch guns needed six bags of powder, each of which weighed almost 100 pounds. This is one of the powder elevators.

The Macro Mondays theme for this week is "Powder" Use this powder to lube wheels of pine wood derby car.

Another powder day in the Cascade Mountains - the season started off slowly but Feb has been the snowiest month in quite some time with temps much lower than normal

We tried to make a photo of Alessandra with powder flying around - was lots of fun and I think the photos worked out nicely:) I really missed that we did not have a black background, could have done even more)

The Powder House (Y Cwt Pwdr) dates to the mid-18th Century and takes its name from its original use as a store for the gun powder unloaded from ships for use in the local slate mines.. In approximately 1897, the then redundant gunpowder store was converted into a dwelling house.

I made two shelves of some leftover balm(?) wood I had. The room is looking way more cosy already. I wish I had a narrow bench or something to add to it..
