What's Cooking? I know I haven't been around much lately, but I wanted to share that it is with good reason: for the past few weeks I've been working with a large publishing house on a series of cooking encyclopedias! Woo-hoo! And even though I'm working with a group of folks (set assistants, editor, art director, etc.), it has been sooooo much work. Thankfully, I wasn't hired to do the actual cooking shots (those are done in a sweaty, 4-kitchen studio space)...I'm doing more of the culinary and beauty shots...such as the chapter head pages shown above (for demo purposes here, I added the "herbs" type myselfthe final graphical elements will be included in the design phase).
Note: I promised myself that 2011 would be the year that I would share more info, techniques & tips with my Flickr friends, and in doing so, hopefully make my stream more than just about my photography. And that started with the inclusion of my EXIF and Strobist info with each shot, which I'm glad many of you have found useful. :) But with large projects like these, it seems like a great time to offer more detailed information...lighting configs, set-up shots and set sketches. To that end, below is a page from my always-handy moleskine that I use to frame out shots, lighting and compositional elements. It's crucial when conveying concepts to a design team and to ensure that print margins, bleeds and areas for typographical elements are maintained when shooting. Hope this is helpful!

The really good Thai Spa's take such trouble to create a heavenly atmosphere. And with such style, intricacy and creativity too.
These sorts of decorative arrangements could be found every 10 meters in a one acre size spa ....
If I make it to Heaven and it looks anything like the spa I visited in Koh Samui, Thailand, that will do for me!

Now we don't burn our hands when we make tea!

There was a beautiful display of pots, small sculptures and coloured driftwood on this corner house. The owner must have spent hours putting this dispaly together, which continued all round the house

Taken on my way back from work today. Taken from Meltham. I couldn't resist the rainbow!
It's Pot Hole season in Montreal, or as we like to refer to it as La Festival des Pot Holes"... one giant example above. Garages everywhere are licking their chops waiting for business:)
A close up of the Fort Worth Water Gardens. I shot this with the new app TriggerTrap that attaches my phone to my camera to make long exposure HDR easier.
I've been waiting for a rainbow to appear in this spot since I moved to this house last July. This week it finally appeared, just in time for St. Patrick's Day! Time to go looking for that pot of gold?
This is the second image I made of the tea pot, I made this image from the bottom looking up at the ceiling.
Now where is that pot o gold...?
This is a 3 photo stitch from a P&S camera so not the quality I would like - too much noise. The sun was really lifting the colours. A short moment later it was gone....You can see a second rainbow for much of the bow.

SSC - Hangers
This is an old handmade pot hanger bought on Greenwich Market many years ago. We had visited the observatory and headed back to Greenwich for some lunch, whilst mooching around the market we spotted these lovely hangers which are now showing their age. I have just planted them with hanging geraniums, possibly a little too early, for the occasion.

There's a pot of gold somewhere. After an unwelcome shower at the Severn Valley Diesel Day the sun broke through and brought the briefest amazing Rainbow, which just happened to coincide with the arrival of Peak Class 46 D182 into Highley.

I like this pot - I always wanted to photograph a pot, and here is one. I woke up that day, still sleepy, and went straight out without even brushing. Waited for the right lighting. I am truly inseparable from my camera now.
