From Wikipedia (so it must be true): "The obelisk posture is a handstand-like position that some dragonflies and damselflies assume to prevent overheating on sunny days. The abdomen is raised until its tip points at the sun, minimizing the surface area exposed to solar radiation."
This makes shooting in the middle of the day - when the sun is high - make at least a little sense!

Had a fab time at the Big Night Out at Pink Punters with Natalee. Chatted to lots of lovely people and danced till my feet dropped off- at least that is what it felt like at 3am! Ooh, and got lots of comments about my shoes and dress, which is always nice.
Must remember not to use flash next time in these situations :)
Observe their environment: By standing still, they can better survey the area to assess the threat and determine their next move.
Listen for sounds: This posture allows them to listen more intently to detect any further signs of danger.

Birds were safe :-) ... Today :-(
One was not eating and the other really did not want it but for form sake and the juvenile further upstream they have to look like they are going to battle for the salmon.

With fading light, I was able to capture one of these beauties sitting upright and still. With next week off, I will try for better light and background detail.

The ruby-throated hummingbird is a species of hummingbird that generally spends the winter in Central America, Mexico, and Florida, and migrates to Eastern North America for the summer to breed. It is by far the most common hummingbird seen east of the Mississippi River in North America.
