A tree kingfisher found in the mangroves, forests, and river valleys of Australia, Fiji, Indonesia, New Caledonia, New Zealand (where it is the only native species of kingfisher) Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and the Wallis and Futuna Islands. In New Zealand, kotare shows altitudinal migration, with post-breeding movement from higher altitudes to the coast and also from forest to coast and open lands.
It is 19-23 cm long.
The kingfisher is a brightly coloured bird, deep green-blue on the head and upperparts. Pale yellowish buff underparts and a creamy white collar around the neck. Long, dark, broad bill and black eye with a yellowish buff eyebrow that starts at the bill and finishes above and beyond the eye.
The dagger-like bill is used in the breeding season to excavate a tunnel in an earth bank by repeatedly flying at the bank at full speed, neck outstretched and uttering a peculiar whirring call. Once the tunnel has started and the hole is big enough to perch in, the kingfisher then continues to excavate the tunnel by pecking and scooping out the loosen earth. The tunnel is sloped slightly upwards and ends with a chamber for the nest. Despite their name, kingfishers do not necessarily eat fish. They tend to populate coastal areas but some are entirely terrestrial. Those around the coastal waters eat small crabs and fish, in fresh water they'll eat tadpoles, freshwater crayfish and other small fish. In the open country they eat earthworms, cicadas, weta, stick insects, dragonflies, chafer beetles, other beetles, spiders, lizards, mice and small birds (especially silvereyes). I have seen them taking cicadas on the wing during heavy hatches of these insects.

Bestes Saisonspiel + erste Niederlage der U/10A

Eines einmal vorweg: Unsere (Eure) Kinder mĂĽssen wirklich immer sehr brav sein, denn nach absoluten Tiefsttemperaturen gestern herrschte heute wieder von in der FrĂĽh weg strahlender Sonnenschein. Ein richtiger Traumtag, wo es einem nicht leid tut, dass man frĂĽh aufstehen muss und den halben bis ganzen Tag an der frischen Luft verbringen darf (muss).
Im ersten Spiel gegen Universitas schien dann auch in meinem Herzen die Sonne, denn die Kinder spielten zum ersten Mal in dieser Saison echt schön zusammen. Dieses Mal hat jeder Einzelne in der Mannschaft von der ersten bis zur letzten Minute seinen Teil zum Sieg beigetragen (das Spiel endete 8:2). Die Verteidigung war konzentriert und engagiert und von der Mitte bis in den Sturm gab es wirklich schöne Kombinationen, die nicht immer nur ĂĽber Fabi gingen. Auch die kleinen Korrekturen in der Halbzeit, die hauptsächlich die AusfĂĽhrung der langen Ecken betraf, wurden sofort umgesetzt. Einziger Minuspunkt blieb zum Teil die Chancenauswertung, denn einige StĂĽrmer verhauten 100%ige Sitzer. Erst gegen Spielende merkte man den Leistungsträgern schon ein bisschen MĂĽdigkeit an – verständlich, denn sie hatten echt super gekämpft und waren alle viel gelaufen.
Diese beiden letztgenannten Dinge sollten uns dann beim zweiten Spiel gegen Arminen zum Verhängnis werden. Vor allem die Müdigkeit machte sich nach nur einem Match Pause immer mehr breit. Bei den jüngeren Spielern fehlte dann auch langsam die Konzentration, und Benedikt musste krankheitsbedingt überhaupt nach der Pause w.o. geben (hoffentlich geht es ihm schon besser!!!). Dadurch hatten wir keine echten Tauschoptionen mehr, und alle Leistungsträger mussten durchspielen, auch wenn sie nach den beiden U/10-Spielen gleich noch ein U/12-Spiel auf ihrem Programm hatten (super Ansetzung!).
Dennoch wurde auch gegen Armi

Post Office Bay is one of the few visitor sites, that is visited for its human history. Whaling Captain James Colnett established the wooden post barrel in 1793. At this time whaling was a big industry, ships were typically gone for 2 years at a time. Floreana was a frequent stop for these ships. Outbound ships would drop off letters after rounding the cape and the ships returning home would pick them up and delivered in time by hand.

5 panels 30 x 30" consisting of 81 Post-its each. Children created the artwork and I assembled, sealed, and accented each one. These will hang side by side in a children's hospital waiting room.
I didn't want to post this picture, because it really makes her hair look much shorter than it really is. After I took it, I was looking at it on the LCD display and was thinking, "Whoa...she looks like a boy!" :)
So keep in mind, her hair's not really this short. I'll post a different picture of her shortly where you can see how her new do really looks.
