Held from June 30 to July 11 2008 at IRRI, this training course provided participants with an understanding of the basics of rice production. The course included field visits to the main rice production regions in the Philippines. Training also included creating familiarity with the germplasm collection amd other science and rice farming resources at IRRI, an appreciation of the research to production model at IRRI and its developing partners, hands-on skills relating to all aspects of production and post-harvest, an understanding of international collaborations, and a plan and personal contacts for the participants to use on their return to their homes.

The Postcard

 

A postcard bearing no publisher's name which was posted in New Zealand on the 15th. March 1907 to:

 

A. R. MacWilliam Esq.,

Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. Ltd.,

Finsbury Circus,

London EC2,

England.

 

The Anglo-Iranian Oil Company changed its name to British Petroleum (BP) in 1954.

 

A.R. MacWilliam was an art collector. The book 'Degas - The Artist's Mind' by Theodore Reff includes a copy of the oil painting 'Luncheon on the Grass' by Tissot, painted circa 1865. The caption states that the painting is from the collection of A.R. MacWilliam of London.

 

The message on the back of the card was as follows:

 

"Rotura 15/3/07.

This place is a great change

from EC2.

We are having a thoroughly

enjoyable time.

The weather is perfect

Hope you have managed to

keep fit during what would

have been an extremely

trying winter.

The tempo here is very

leisurely indeed - quite

suited to a lazy holiday.

Best wishes,

Yours sincerely,

E.G. Mumford".

So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?

 

Not a lot, although on that day, Zarah Leander, Swedish actress and singer, was born. Zarah died in 1981.

Applied to my leg during ankle surgery. The arrow indicates where the cast was opened and re-closed with more fiber tape to remove stitches and check the incision. Why didn't they give me a new cast? They didn't want my ankle to move.
