A sampling of photos from an afternoon walk through Gloucester, MA, my new home. These photos have minimal post-processing. Some use the built-in HDR feature of my Sony a55 camera.

Mannings amusements, Felixstowe, Suffolk. Sadly shrinking, little of the fairground survives but, two generations on, "family fun" is still to be had here it seems.

Serving as both a First and Second World War battery, Houton Head was one of the last defences against enemy boats attempting to gain access to Scapa Flow. Paired with Scad battery on the Isle of Hoy, Houton Head was the termination of a 3km long chain net barrier to slow or stop attacking ships and submarines. The two Quick Firing (QF) guns of each battery able to fire on ships as they approached the barrier if needed.
Houton Head Battery retains three searchlight emplacements placed at the bottom of the cliffs, each built on a raised platform (possibly of WW1 origin). There are two covered 12-pounder QF gun emplacements, each with an associated crew shelter. There is also a workshop and magazine between both emplacements, and a Battery Observation Post (BOP). A Naval signal station sits on top of the hill, which was also used as the BOP until it was relocated closer to the emplacements. A hardened engine house and domestic accommodation is also located on top of the hill.
Separation of the Second World War remains from those constructed 30 years earlier is difficult, much of the earlier site having likely been demolished or built over.

The VR inscription on this post box denotes that it was manufactured during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837 - 1901).
There is a small metal plaque at the top stating that it was installed at nearby Sarratt Vale in 1907 before being relocated here.
So it may have been somewhere else first, but quite likely that it was held by the GPO for a few years before being installed.

As the confirmation sheet on the left indicates, my mail was supposed to be held from July 9 through today, July 21. This is the pile I found in my mailbox when I arrived home Monday evening, July 20, and some of it had clearly been in the box longer ago than Monday. I have lived at this address for exactly four years and have submitted hold mail requests 5-6 times. Not a single time has the request been processed properly. Even if all this was placed in my box only a couple days ago (probably not), I know for a fact the last time that my mail wasn't held in any way. All prior times I had indicated that I would come to the post office and pick it up, yet each time I arrived, they did not have my mail and said that it was on the truck and out for delivery.
