In this view from the Market Street overpass, Conrail SD40s 6247 & 6317, with SD40-2-6358, are leading E/B train PIML-3 (Pittsburgh, PA to Metuchan/Linden, NJ). They're splitting the now gone classic Pennsylvania Railroad Position Light Signals on track one of CR's Pittsburgh Line. Sadly, all of the grain bins are long gone too.

Thank you all for visits, favs and comments, it's greatly appreciated!

Found this black-crowned night-heron getting into position for hunting in the marshy shallow water. They can be quite patient too, sometimes found hunched over in the same position for an extensive time while waiting on some type of aquatic delight. They will defend their "hunting grounds" or territory as well, should another opportunistic feeder come along.

What I find most fascinating about them is that quite striking red eye ... they simply grab my attention.

Happy Sunday everyone!

From the Heligoland cliff edge path you can photograph birds at a height of 50m from a parallel position. There are not many places where you can achieve this special perspective so easily.

Comp. Detail: In the uncropped image I have more sky than water and I normally avoid having the horizon running through the middle of the image. In this case, however, the sky and the North Sea fade into the blurred background and supported by the bird's almost X-shape the viewer's gaze is drawn to the middle or foreground of the image. The horizon itself can only be guessed at. It doesn't cut through the image. That's why I chose the crop so that two elements of the northern gannet's habitat, sky and ocean, are represented together and equally.

Treecreepers are difficult to photograph from a good position because, although they usually beginn climbing up the tree from about ground level, they quickly reach a height where you can only get the classic belly or ass shot. The angle is therefore important and if you don't catch them at the starting line, the chance for a photo is quickly over. I was lucky with this treecreeper: it wasn't in a particular hurry, or rather, it searched the bark of the tree so carefully that I had enough time to photograph it searching for food at a height of around 1.50 m. I only noticed that it had actually pulled a small spider out of the bark when I was editing the photo on the screen. The spider is tiny, not a sumptuous meal, you would think. But the treecreeper itself only weighs nine grams...

Sometimes lookin' up in a building is like lookin' into another dimension.

During the first leg of our Spanish summer tour, we returned to the CAC. Mainly because we hadn't seen the buildings from the inside yet. The Prince Felip Science museum was a great building to start with.

Shot in the main atrium, showcasing the articulated and intricate 'organic' architecture of Calatrava. The 'spikes' (sharp triangles) of the roof, which are visible in the approx 1/3 position of the frame, are shown too, in a shot from the outside: here

It's not 'enchanted concrete' like in Sao Paulo here but, staying close to Calatrava's form language, 'lush concrete'.

My hometown, Schoonhoven, has a moat. In early days, it enclosed the old city center, as a protection against intruders. Together with the city walls it was almost impossible to conquer the city.

Nowadays, part of the moat is gone, but a small part of it is still be visible. Even the star-shaped form is visible on maps.

Almost five years ago, the counsil of Schoonhoven agreed to construct a bandstand on the water. It forms a stage for a broad spectrum of music bands. From the adjacent park, you have a perfect view on the bandstand and you can enjoy the atmosphere.

This photo is taken from across the moat, in the direction of the park, the bandstand and the Great St. Bartholomew Church of Schoonhoven.

Minutes after arrival with the 1822 from Dingwall, the locomotive has already uncoupled from it's short take of Mark 1 and 2 coaches and is about to run around prior to pushing the coaches back into the station ready for the next departure.

Those viewers that know Kyle may be wondering about my viewpoint for taking this photograph. In the summer of 1989 I was working on a ship that returned to Kyle each evening and moored at the quay next to the station, and this is taken from the bridge of the MV Northern Horizon... no pole necessary!

At this time services from Kyle were unable to reach Inverness due to the collapse of the Ness Viaduct a few months earlier ( see flic.kr/p/2aErgVU). Consequently, trains were running only as far as Dingwall with passengers being taken by bus to Inverness.

Manakara (Madagascar) - Little shopkeeper I met under the covered market of Manakara. I didn't see that this little girl was watching me while I was photographing the market stalls. When I saw her, so as not to scare her, I gently aimed my lens at her. She remained in the same position without moving an inch.

Not much to write today.. am running a fever, headache & sore throat but still at work tho :( really tired but no choice i guess as i've a couple of important meetings this afternoon.

Slept like 9pm last night therefore didn't manage to catch up most of your photostream... only manage some this morning. My apologies & wish myself a fast recovery so i can catch up with you soon.

France, Normandy, Mont-Saint-Michel, Spring 2022

Mont-Saint-Michel is a tidal island in Normandy, France. As of 2019, the island had a population of 29. The commune's position—on an island just a few hundred metres from land—made it accessible at low tide to the many pilgrims to its abbey, but defensible as an incoming tide stranded, drove off, or drowned would-be assailants. The island remained unconquered during the Hundred Years' War; a small garrison fended off a full attack by the English in 1433. Louis XI recognised the reverse benefits of its natural defence and turned it into a prison. The abbey was used regularly as a prison during the Ancien Régime. Mont-Saint-Michel and its surrounding bay were inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979 for its unique aesthetic and importance as a medieval Christian site. It is visited by more than 3 million people each year. Mont-Saint-Michel served as an artistic inspiration for a number of works. In Peter Jackson's 2003 film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Gondor's capital city was modelled on Mont Saint-Michel. Likewise, the town and castle in the Disney hit Tangled were based on Mont-Saint-Michel, as was the design of Dark Souls location New Londo Ruins.
