This is the current lighthouse at Portland in Dorset.

Standing at 135 feet tall it is distinctive having a red band around the white body.

Built between 1903-1905 it was first lit in 1906 and became fully automated in 1996.

The light can be seen from approx 26 nautical miles away.

From my time in the Royal Navy in the 80's it was one of the first lights we saw as we came up the English Channel on the way 'home'.

"The Portland Observatory is the only remaining historic maritime signal station in the United States. As an intact survivor from the Golden Age of Sail, the Observatory was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, became a National Historic Landmark in 2006, and named a National Civil Engineering Landmark in 2006. It celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2007."

Here is dusk over Portland, Oregon a few nights ago. Thanks to Gary Randall for his help finding this location.

It was scary being in the city with all the rioting going on last week. All three black people who live in Portland were out vandalizing and setting things on fire after the Jury decision in Ferguson.

Dawn at Portland Head Light on the shores of Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

This was my first visit to this iconic location on the southern Maine coast, but definitely won't be my last. With excellent view points from both the north and south as well as the constantly changing tides, it offers endless composition possibilities.

Portland Skyline from the Waterfront at Blue Hour just after Sunset. Morrison bridge to the right and Hawthorne bridge to the left

I don't know if they were security officers or just bikers.. but they said I could hop the railing onto the waterfront, so I quickly collapsed my tripod, slung my camera around my neck and started climbing. Worth the shot.
