Homebrew Portable Softbox in action
Simple tissue paper show flipped down to diffuse light form flash. Tissue paper can be wrapped and tucked around flash and held in place using a rubber band or tape.
Make an easy to build portable softbox
- cut a backing frame from a 1/2 gallon plastic milk jug
- shape the plastic to fit the rear of your flash, like a bounce card, narrow at the bottom and more flared out at the top
- line the front of the plastic with a reflective material. I used the shiny mylar material from a package of Nabisco oatmeal cookies. I attached the mylar using double-sided tape.
- tape down the edges of the mylar to the plastic using gaffers tape
- Attach the reflector to flash using rubber bands
- make a "flip down" diffuser using simple tissue paper or other diffusing material
The flash and portable softbox can be used on-camera or off-camera, One Light Strobist style.

Street candid taken in Glasgow, Scotland. I stopped to chat with this lovely couple who were preparing for the slog up the slope of Buchanan Street.
Taken nearby the presidents Atyrau residence during his recent visit - this generator was running, and feeding power in to the district substation. Atyrau has short, but fairly frequent power outages, so a backup generator is essential.
The driver, sat behind the red curtains in his KAMAZ looked bored out of his mind. The police, and plain clothed security guys wandering around were much more alert.

Once the log is securely locked in to the track, we set the depth of cut (in this case, 7/8" thick slabs), opened the valve for the lubricant flow, and turned it on. We knew we would be using the sawmill inside our shop, so we chose the model with a 220-V electric motor, rather than a gasoline or diesel model.

The Onda portable microwave oven is a very clever twist on an appliance that was first introduced to homes in 1955. Pre-prepared meals are placed in compatible food packages and warmed with microwaves. Specifically, the Onda is slid on to the packaging and the aluminum contained within the interior of the handheld device creates a circuit connection when the seal of the packaging is broken. Paper batteries are used to produce energy, making the Onda both smart and eco-friendly. The Onda also comes in a range of different colors for personal preference.
Portable art belt buckle that dates back to

This piece has overall dimensions of: 7.1 x 2.7 cm (2 13/16 x 1 1/16 in.) it’s made from Bronze with garnets, glass, mother of pearl, gold foil, traces of gilding: bronze and glass. These belt buckles were used for both men and women and would live with them to their grave. This particular belt buckle were made for women at the time. There’s no explanation as to why these belt buckles were taken to their graves, but it’s very interesting. These buckles are all different, unique and beautiful.

My 'internet in a box'. The Mac Mini have VM Ware on it, and I've got a library of web tools on the hard drives. There's a router sitting on top of the Mini, and the services are available to the people using my network even if we don't have a solid internet connection. My favourite service to run is DimDim, which does web based video conferencing and chat.
I'm using JumpBox systems, and having a great time with them.
