With mainly stacks and some freight on the rear, NS Harrisburg to Norfolk (Portlock Yard) heads down the former Southern Ry toward Lynchburg. The Central of Georgia GE leading.
Eastbound stacks on the Christiansburg District pop out of the short, curved tunnel along the New River at Pembroke. This is a Landers Yard in Chicago to Portlock Yard at Norfolk, Virginia schedule.

234 crosses Bridge 5 on a beautiful Spring afternoon in downtown Norfolk. PSR affords this opportunity as 234 is long enough that it needs to pull all the way onto the bridge to make it's Portlock set-off.
NS NV43 crosses the Elizabeth River drawbridge (aka "Bridge 5") in Norfolk. NV43 is a transfer job from Portlock Yard to Lamberts Point, which seems to often shuttle power around between the two yards. In the background is the tower, still manned to control the drawbridge and a few adjacent interlockings.

All the clouds disappeared at sunset in Porlock Weir yesterday apart from this one. It was miles out to sea though so I made the best of it.
This is version two of a shot in Portlock, Oahu aver a year ago. The powerful surge of the wave nearly wipe me out and had to dodge out of here after this very shot. This was the last time I stood anywhere close to the edge of the ocean like this. LOL
Have some extra time this week to process some pictures and even doing some photo shoots. Hope everyone is having a great week.
Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, Prevost Island, B.C. A light station was first constructed at this spot in 1895. The current lighthouse dates to 1987 and is a fully automated lighhouse.
A very late NS 227 sits past east end portlock with two SD70ACe leading and begins to pull forward to the belt line diamond.
Had a trip down to Portlock Weir on tuesday.
Very unusual day for me, it did not rain
Makes a change :-)
NB06 i believe crosses over to the Norfolk sub on main 1 and head west into portlock from berkeley with 5113 at the lead. Really missed catching the beltline, been awhile and was glad to see 5113 and 5261, gotta fine 5260 next!
After spending the day in and around Norfolk, Virginia between Lamberts Point and Portlock Yard, I decided to head over to Shell Rd near Bridge 7 to see if I could get a few trains going by. Instead, when I got there, a crew was getting ready to drop off a new turnout for a small spur just to the west of the bridge. NS 6110 does the honors and was built as N&W 6110 in 1975. After a nice conversation with the conductor and they dropped the switch off, I continued on my way.
NS I78 enters Suffolk VA with a very long train of intermodal heading to portlock yard with two BNSF gevos and a UP gevo trailing. Goodness the foreign power has been awesome recently, you would think we were in Iowa lol. This train did put a smile on my face. i love my NS but to see a train with no black and white was a nice change of paces. I did plan on catching this in Downtown Suffolk but ended up checking google maps and wanted to go for a shot. Half way to the spot, i realized that i would be shotting completed backlit. It was to late for me to turn back so i had to make it work. I end up walking down a little on the lit side and ended shotting next to a farmers cotton felid and sitting on a stick of wood to get some height. I ended up puling this off and I'm super happy with it. It may still just be a wedge shot but I'm still pleased with the results
NS i78 begins to work portlock as it pass a once know field that was great for shooting trains. This train had all BNSF power witch was a nice surprise, One up front two as DPUs.
This small lighthouse sits on the eastern end of Prevost Island, one of the Southern Gulf Islands, and overlooks the BC Ferries passing through on their Tsawwassen - Swartz Bay Route. The original lighthouse was built in the 1890's but the current one is from 1987, although Portlock Point has been fully automated and de-staffed since 1964.

An NS light move crawls and appears out of nowhere from Portlock Yard heading to Lambers Point while overtaking Amtrak 153 that is beginning to move after waiting for Bridge #5 to open.
First snowfall and an abandoned building in Portlock, along the Huron Central Railway (mile 149.14)- -about 50 km east of Sault Ste. Marie. Currently Portlock is only a place name in rural Johnson Township: 2011 population 750, established 1889. Portlock was probably named after nearby Port Lock Harbour on Lake Huron- -a port operating in the mid 1800’s.

NS 41N comes down from lamberts point into portlock with 30 loaded coal car. Im not sure why this happen because 41N is normally a grain train? My guess is that its probably a batch of bad orders but who knows.

NS NV01 crosses the former Virginian Railway/Belt Line bridge over the eastern branch of the Elizabeth River. The train shuttles large cuts of containers between Portlock Yard and NIT. The bridge, originally a double track structure was re-built as a single track span. It carries NS traffic as well as Buckingham Branch trains off their Little Creek line.
NS 811 departs Lamberts Point in Norfolk, VA with a string of empties for Elmore, WV seen here passing the Amtrak station.
Right in the middle of Lamberts Point and Portlock yard, the Amtrak station is an interesting place to sit and watch trains. All coal loads and empties pass this location along with multiple motive power moves from all trains that come into Portlock yard 4 miles to the south that go to Lamberts Point for general maintenance.
NS #1211 is in the wind as 273 accelerates out of Portlock seen here at Shell Road. The spur to the left used to serve a long removed powerplant.
After wrapping up our chase of 11T down the old Shenandoah Division we headed west out of Roanoke along the former Norfolk and Western Railway mainline, modern day Norfolk Southern's Christiansburg District along their busy Heartland Corridor route. My main goal was this iconic railroad location that certainly should need no introduction as it is easily one of the most photographed spots on the entire NS network.
This was the fourth of four trains we'd shoot here on this pretty afternoon but alas the sun didnt cooperate this time. Oh well 50% in full sun here isn't bad I suppose. Running set
up in 1x1 DPU is NS train 277, intermodal from Portlock Yard in Norfolk to Landers Yard in Chicago. Leading is NS 7304, a rebuilt SD70ACu originally blt. Feb. 1997 as an SD9043MAC for the Union Pacific numbered UP 8079. The train is framed up by the famed fence as they approach the John Farm Rd. crossing on Main 1 at about MP 280.7 climbing the 1.32% grade that lifts trains over 1100 ft in the 30 miles from Roanoke to Christianburg. This route traces back to 1856 when the 5 ft gauge Virginia and Tennessee opened its 204 mile route between Lynchburg and Bristol. In 1870 it became a component of William Mahone's Atlantic, Mississippi, and Ohio Railroad. After that newly expanded system failed during the panic of 1873 it was eventually sold at auction and emerged in 1881 as the Norfolk and Western Railway.

Its that time of year again on the Norfolk sub. NS 40N makes its return for the colder seasons with a strong consist to start off with. BNSF 7198 is are leader and the Reading Heritage unit trails right behind into Portlock yard on a cold gloomy afternoon.
Norfolk Southern SD70ACe-1224 is on the point of S/B train 228 (Enola, PA to Portlock Yard, Norfolk, VA). Here, about to cross Withers-LaRue Road on NS's Hagerstown District.
NS 816 rolls by Park ave right outside Portlock with an ACe leader. This was a double up coal train with two DPUs in the middle which is uncommon for the Norfolk sub. caught me off guard when the Nickel Plate Road was the second DPU on the train and had to chase it down to Lamberts point.
