During the 6th-century BC. Phocaeans greeks from Massalia (modern day Marseille) founded the colony of Mònoikos. The name of the colony derives from the local veneration of the Greek demigod and mythological hero Hercules, also later adopted by the Romans, who was said to have constructed the ancient path that passed through the region from Spain to Italy. The Roman emperor Julian also wrote of Hercules's construction of Monaco's port and a coastal road. The road was dotted with altars to Hercules, and a temple dedicated to him was established on the Rock of Monaco. The name Port Hercules was subsequently used for the ancient port. Monoeci meaning "Single One" or Monoikos meaning "Single House" could be a reference to Hercules or his temple, or the isolated community inhabiting the area around the rock.

This sculpture of Juan Manuel Fangio, is a tribute to him after winning the 1955 Monaco Grand Prix in his Mercedes Benz.
It's located on the corner of the Port of Monaco, just near the Grand Prix circuits start/finish line.
While taking this shot I managed to draw a small crowd . . . and an Aussie one at that . . . a group of tourists who had all just disembarked from a near by cruise ship.
I went to remove the stilettos, but the tourists requested a quick few shots with them first . . . of course the red stilettos obliged!

Unveiled at the 1920 Brussels Motor Show, despite its reduced size it presented careful technology, with a chassis made from one piece of pressed sheet metal and a three-speed transaxle, but as it was very narrow the manufacturer deprived it of a differential. Available with a two-seater body in tandem, or side by side, it quickly gained an excellent reputation for sobriety during the "5 liter can" competitions which were all the rage at the time: it won its category in that of the Ferté-Bernard, where she covered 117.10 km on 5 liters of gasoline, while setting a lap record at 40 km/h!

Port Hercule is a deep water port full of yachts and sailboats of wealthy people from all over the world. Besides having some of the most luxurious yachts in the world it is located in a beautiful location with the district of Monte Carlo on one side and the Rock of Monaco on the other. It is home to the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix that occurs every year in Monaco, where the course wraps itself around Port Hercule. If you happen to be cruising around the Mediterranean Sea, this is also the port where cruise ships will dock if you sail into Monaco.

There's no avoiding hills in Monaco, especially if you want to make the most of the views! This is the view from the opposite side of Port Hercule looking up to where we were earlier in the day. I would guess we were somewhere above that largest rectangular building you can see on the left. Sadly, we didn't carry on up along the road, as we completely missed out on Monaco City - the buildings you can see right at the top. But we were keen to see what it was like on the casino side of the area - Monte Carlo - and we wouldn't have had the time or energy to do everything. We had to be back for the return boat trip by 5pm.

Port Hercules (Port Hercule) is the only deep-water port in Monaco. The port has been in use since ancient times. The modern port was completed in 1926, and underwent substantial improvements in the 1970s. It covers almost 40 acres (160,000 m2), enough to provide anchorage for up to 700 vessels. The port is located in the La Condamine district. Harbor pilots are required for all vessels longer than 30 meters. The depth of water in the harbor ranges from seven meters for standard berths and up to 40 meters for the outer piers and cruise ship docks.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Hercules
The name comes from the Middle Ages and means the cultivable land at the foot of a village or castle. Today the port of Monaco and a thriving business district are located in La Condamine. After a recent expansion of Port Hercule La Condamine has been expanded by (0.02 sq mi) or (0.03 km²) which was completed in 2010. Part of the Formula 1 racetrack snakes through the ward and part of the harbor.
In 1957, alongside the convertible Grand Luxe, the Renault catalog offered two versions: the 4 CV Business, whose finish was basic, and the 4 CV Sport, more luxurious. It is she who corresponds to the car in the collection, restored in its attractive original periwinkle blue color.

Following the Second World War, Mercedes sought to regain lost prestige and succeeded in doing so with its spectacular 1954 300 SL with “butterfly” wings. Mercedes then launched a more extensive version in 1951, equipped with a six-cylinder overhead camshaft engine, the first for Mercedes after the conflict. This new mechanics makes it possible to take this car to 140 km/h, which also benefits from a more up-to-date style, the headlights now being integrated into the wings.

From September 1935, the new models had a new name, SS Jaguar, but the Jaguar brand did not become effective until 1955. The models offered from 1945 to 1948 were in reality the 1940 models. In accordance with perfectionist requirements by Sir William Lyons, founder of the brand, the interior was sumptuous, the materials used: wood, leather, carpets are the reputation of English cars of this period.

Further up the hill, along the Avenue d'Ostende, we had a lovely view of the Viking Star docked at Quai Ranier III in Monte Carlo.
The Viking Star cruise ship visits Monaco (Monte Carlo) as part of Viking Ocean Cruises. The Viking Star is a small, all-veranda ship with a Scandinavian design. (From AI Overview)
MV Viking Star is the lead ship of the Viking Star class[citation needed] of cruise ships, and the first such ship operated by Viking Ocean Cruises, a division of Viking Cruises. She entered service in April 2015. Two Viking Star-class sister ships, Viking Sea and Viking Sky, joined her in the Viking Ocean Cruises fleet in 2016.
Viking Star has five stateroom categories, all with private verandas, and 14 Explorer Suites. Up to 930 passengers can be accommodated in her 465 staterooms and suites, all of which are spacious for a cruise ship. The smallest staterooms are 25 m2 (270 sq ft) in size; the two-room suites range from 70.3 m2 (757 sq ft) to 134.5 m2 (1,448 sq ft) in area, and feature wrap-around private balconies offering sweeping views. After the death of Charles S. Rolls at the controls of his Wright plane on July 12, 1910, Henry Royce settled in the South of France, at Rayol-Canadel in the Var with a handful of engineers. It was in 1925 from this Var property that Henry Royce studied the new Silver Ghost or New Phantom, each modification of which was validated on site and sent to the factory in England. With a classic and traditional construction of the brand, only the power of the engine was a real progress, 106 hp instead of 60/70 hp of the Ghost.

Two more views as we started to descend the hill towards the city centre. With a little tweaking I managed to more of less line up these two photos overlooking Port Hercule. We were in a little viewpoint area - the road we were walking down is on the far right - you can see some people and a van there. The little black Mini down below caught my eye - we actually saw it drive off. For some reason I thought of Mr Bean, even though the colour is wrong!!
“Ask the one who owns one”: this is how Packard emphasizes the quality of its automobiles, placing complete trust in those who know them. With Cadillac, Lincoln, Duesenberg and Pierce-Arrow, the brand shared the upper hand in the 1930s but, alongside its sometimes ostentatious competitors, Packard reflected good taste, elegance and refinement. With its elegant convertible body, it is one of the most luxurious cars of its time.

In the main harbour of Monaco, Port Hercule, the luxury is everywhere, every yatch is more ubermagnificient than the others...
In Europe, following the Second World War, the need for motorization was enormous but resources were lacking and few families had the budget to acquire a passenger car. This is why the popularity of microcars, small cars, often powered by motorcycle mechanics but more comfortable than a two-wheeler, developed from the end of the 1940s.

With Cadillac, Packard represented the very high end of the American range in the 1920s and 1930s. This model could receive different bodywork. Here, it is a roadster with a "spider", a small rear seat located outside the passenger compartment, whose backrest opens like a trunk and ironically nicknamed "mother-in-law's seat".
