PANJIM: North Goa Principal Sessions Judge today held Goa’s infamous serial killer Mahanand Naik guilty for the murder of a 32-year-old woman at Bambolim in 2007.

Principal Judge Nutan Sardessai ruled Mahanand guilty of murdering Susheela Fatarpekar of Curca and fleeing away with her gold ornaments.

It may be recalled that the victim’s sister had filed a complaint against Mahanand at the Agassaim police station on May 19, 2009. The complainant alleged that Susheela was abducted by the accused on October 24, 2007, under the pretext of marrying her.

“Mahanand took her to an isolated spot behind Goa University library and killed her by strangulating her with her own duppata (long stole) and robbed the gold ornaments. Her body was thrown in the bushes”, the chargesheet mentioned.

The accused was booked under section 364 (kidnapping or abduction in order to murder), 302 (murder), 392 (robbery) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.

The prosecution led by Sarojini Sardinha examined 21 witnesses including the goldsmith Mukund Rivankar who deposed that Mahanand sold off the gold ornaments at his jewelry store in Ponda, stating he was in need of money for his daughter’s medical treatment.

During the course of investigation police recovered part of gold in the melted form weighing 20.340 grams.

This is Mahanand’s first conviction in the murder case after a string of seven murder acquittals by Sessions Court giving benefit of doubt. Mahanand, who is already convicted in a rape case, has contested the verdict before the High Court of Bombay at Goa.

Mahanand was arrested on April 21, 2009 after the lone surviving victim complained of rape against him. His spate of crimes unfolded one by one after his confession during custodial interrogation and was charged for the gruesome killings over a span of one-and-a-half decade beginning from 1994.

Iron ores being transported through the Zuari river in big barges - Zuari river, Goa, India. In foreground above, the old Borim Bridge.

The Zuari River (Konkani: जुवारी Zuvari, pronounced [zuwəːriː]) is the largest river in the state of Goa, India. It is a tidal river with a total length of 34 kilometres. The Zuari originates at Hemad-Barshem in the Western Ghats. The Zuari is also referred to as the Aghanashani in the interior regions. It flows in the southern-western direction through the talukas of Tiswadi, Ponda, Mormugao, Salcete, Sanguem and Quepem.

The Zuari and Mandovi Rivers form the backbone of Goa's agricultural industry. The Cumbarjuem Canal linking the two rivers has enabled ships navigate to the interior regions to the iron ore mines. The waters of the Mandovi and Zuari both flush out into the Arabian Sea at Cabo Aguada, a common point forming the Mormugao harbour. The port city of Vasco da Gama lies on the mouth of the Zuari River.

Safa Shahouri Mosque (Safa Masjid). Pondá, Goa. India.

Dhunuchi - snapped @ Shri Mahalaxmi Temple Ponda, Goa, India - on the Full Moon night. We consider offering Puja on this day as very big Virtue which will purify our soul and eradicate all the evil spirits.

The Dhunuchi is a funnel based earthen pot or a metal pot that has an open top. Dhuno, powered incense and burning coconut shells are placed inside the dhunuchi, with thick smoke rising from the pot. With this effervescent smoke a sweet smelling thick white smoke spreads and engulfs your senses.

In the evenings, an elaborate aarati is performed in the presence of this effervescent smoke .

Idols of Goddess Laxmi & Lord Narayana will be taken out in a mandrawn Chariot for Pradakhshina (taking rounds) around the Temple and then for traditional Puja & Rituals on the Lake inside the Temple premises having 10 rounds in the water in a very beautiful boat.

On this ocassion 100000 Diyas or Lamps are lighted inside the Temple and decorated. Fantastic & wonderful scene & atmosphere. This ocassion happened on the day of Full Moon when the Moon resided at Mrigashira Star.

This temple is situated about 4kms east of Ponda. Mahalaxmi is the Goddess of power and strength. She is believed to be an incarnation of Adishakti and worshipped by the Saraswats who belonged to the Shakti cult. The special feature of this deity is that she wears Lingam, a symbol of Lord Siva, on her head. Many believe that this Goddess of tremendous strength and power, was released when the devas and the rakshasas were churning the ocean for amrita. The migrating Saraswats to Goa who had brought the Mahalaxmi idol with them, built a temple at Bhandawad village. The majority of the Saraswats, however, was then living at Tiswadi and Sasasti Talukas and had to cross a river and travel a long distance to worship the deity.

So they shifted the idol to Colva, just six kilometers from Madgaon and established another Mahalaxmi temple, on the banks of the Arabian Sea. Legend has it that she was a favorite deity of the Kadambas and the Shilaharas, an ancient dynasty that ruled Goa. The temple was moved from Colva, in Salcette taluka around the inquisition to save it from destruction by the Portuguese. The "Sabhamantap" or the main hall of the temple contains a gallery of 18 wooden images of Lord Vishnu, one of the rarest collections of its kind in the country. The deity is the Kuldevata of Kaushika, Kashyapa, Vatsa, and Bharadwaja Gothras.

The temple is considered the abode of the orginal goddess of the Shakti cult. The temple showcases 24 images out which 12 images are emanatory aspects of Bhagvata sect. These images are counted amongst the few galleries of Vishnu in India. The image of Mahalaxmi has a close resemblance to that of Mahalaxmi at Kolhapur. Speciality of this temple is its beautiful chowka which is famous for its grandeur and beauty. The Goddess Mahalakshmi was worshipped by the Shilahara rulers (750-1030 A. D.) and the early Kadamba Kings of Goa.

Shri Mangeshi temple (Devanagari: श्री मंगेशी मंदीर) is located at Mangeshi Village in Priol, Ponda taluk, Goa. It is at a distance of 1 km from Mardol close to Nagueshi, 21 km from Panaji the capital of Goa,

The main temple is dedicated to Bhagavan Manguesh, an incarnation of Shiva. Bhagavan Mangesh is worshipped here as Shiva linga. According to the legend, Lord Shiva had manifested into a tiger to scare his wife Parvati. Paravati, who was frightened at the sight of the tiger, went in search of Lord Shiva and cried out, "Trahi Mam girisha!" (Oh Lord of Mountains, save me!). Upon hearing the words, Lord Shiva turned himself back to his normal form. The words "mam girisha" became associated with Lord Shiva and over time the words got abbreviated to Manguirisha or Manguesh.

He is the kuldevta of many Hindus in Goa specially of Konkani Saraswat Brahmins.

They are Konkani people and primarily speak Konkani as their mother tongue. They are the first Rigvedic Brahmins.

They claim their origin to the Brahmins who lived on the banks of the now-extinct river Saraswati of Pakistan Punjab or Kashmir. They derived their name from either the river Saraswati or from their spiritual leader, the sage Saraswat Muni(sage) who lived on the banks of Saraswati. These Brahmins were one of the Pancha Gawda Brahmin groups who lived north of the Vindhyas. They belonged to Smarta tradition and primarily worshiped the five deities: Shiva, Vishnu, Devi, Surya and Ganesha. Throughout the course of history, the Saraswat Brahmins have migrated to a variety of locations and are found mostly in Western coast of India.

Rituals[edit]

During the eighth month of pregnancy, a woman moves to her mother's house, especially during the birth of her first child. The expecting mother also performs Ganapathi Pooja for a successful delivery and a healthy child. On the 6th day, a pen and lamp are kept near the child's head, symbolic of a wish for an intelligent child. On the 12th day, the naming and cradling ceremony is performed wherein the paternal grandmother whispers the child's name into his/her ear and a horoscope is cast.[citation needed] When the child turns three months old, they are taken to the temple, and thereafter the child goes to the father's abode.[1]

Festivals[edit]

GSB's celebrate almost all festivals in Hinduism, and follow the Hindu lunar calendar (Panchang in Konkani) that gives the days on which the fasts and festivals should be observed.[2]

Hindu Temples of Goa, India

Goa is mostly known for it's party life, sun-kissed beaches and churches. But it is also an important religious centre for Hindu culture.

Under the Portuguese culture, Hindu religion was suppressed and holy books burned, just as in Portuguese colonial rule elsewhere. However some really old temples have survived to this day. Most of the temple are dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu or his consort Laxmi.

Zuari River - Goa, India, Just after Sunset. Onthe background is the Famous Indian Railways Bridge.

Right Column: Ponda 100pc L'Aiglon Ballet Scene by Carlotta Edwards, 26x16cm the flat box is above the jigsaw. This jigsaw was also sold in May 2014.

Carlotta Edwards was the daughter of the French painter Ferdinand Pourrier. She is well know for her paintings of ballet scenes and exhibited at both the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Paris Salon. The Medici Society published many pints of her work and these are still widely available. In the 1950's framed copies of Carlotta Edward's prints were very popular. The 1950s saw an explosion of all things ballet in popular culture. Her ballet scenes once graced the bedrooms of little girls (and big) all over England but were very popular in Australia and New Zealand. Edwards appears to have based most of her pictures on photographs of popular British dancers.

L'Aiglon is a play in six acts by Edmond Rostand based on the life of Napoleon II, who was the son of Emperor Napoleon I and his second wife, Empress Marie Louise. The title of the play comes from a nickname for Napoleon II, the French word for "eaglet" (a young eagle). The title role was created by Sarah Bernhardt in the play's premiere on 15 March 1900 at the Théàtre Sarah Bernhardt. In October of the same year, the play (in an English translation by Louis N. Parker) premiered at New York's Knickerbocker Theatre, with Maude Adams in the title role. Its first performance in London was at His Majesty's Theatre in 1901, with Bernhardt again playing the leading role. Rostand had written L'Aiglon specifically for Bernhardt, and it became one of her signature roles.

Clemence Dane made an English translation which was broadcast by the BBC on National Radio in 15 November 1936 and regionally the following day. Marius Goring performed the leading role in this production. Arthur Honegger and Jacques Ibert composed an opera in five acts, also with the title L'Aiglon, to a libretto by Henri Cain, based on Rostand's play. It was first performed at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in 1937.
