I forgot to take out my light pollution filter when I quickly stopped to grab this sunset shot but it made for some interesting coloring!

Ai Weiwei: Oil Spill; 2006 - at the White Rabbit Gallery, Sydney (2019)

Ceramic. Commissioned & made by Chinese master porcelain makers after much trial & error in some sort of ironic comment on porcelain making itself. Each individual piece is quite thick & bows slightly into the middle & all are quite heavy & required some ingenuity to exhibit safely. Apparently this multi-piece work was previously shown on the floor but there were concerns that visitors might step on them and that they might break.

The caption (2 of 2) reads, in part: "Ai Weiwei asks us to consider the Faustian bargain that has resulted in unprecedented levels of pollution in the wake of China's modernisation."

This piece is from the White Rabbit Gallery's 'Super Natural' Exhibition, 2019. The gallery exhibits contemporary Chinese art (2000- ) from a private collection; the guided tour adds another level of detail & interest - see www.whiterabbitcollection.org/

NB. Interestingly, Flickr reports that "oil spill" is an invalid tag. Airbrushing reality? Ok, it has allowed it now: looks like this was a Flickr technical issue.

You might think that life in the skies would make birds safe from the dangers of plastic. Think again.

The sheer scale of global plastic production means that no species is beyond its reaches, and if we allow things to continue as they are the situation is only going to get worse.

In the first decade of this century, we made more plastic than all the plastic in history up to the year 2000. And every year, billions of pounds of more plastic end up in the world's oceans.

Studies estimate there are now 15–51 trillion pieces of plastic in the world's oceans — from the equator to the poles, from Arctic ice sheets to the sea floor. Not one square mile of surface ocean anywhere on earth is free of plastic pollution.
