The 1960s were the very end of the "dump your crap anywhere" mentality which was prevalent since the dawn of the industrial revolution. The original Earth Day in 1970, the beginnings of environmentalism as well as the creation of the EPA completely changed the mindset of what is acceptable and what is not.
This is what "off the charts" pollution looks like. PM2.5 @ 590! Winter heating season has arrived and with it, the terrible air.
Polychromatic oil pollution in the parking lot of Walgreen's, Orem, Utah. I never cease to be amazed at the many colors that can be created by light refraction in different mediums.
One small piece of the massive overburden/tailings dump from the Rio Tinto/ Kennecott open pit copper mine. Harriman, Salt Lake County, Utah.

The photo is about river pollution. The boy is throwing dust and garbage at the bank of a river and it is the place from where river pollution starts. The photo was taken from buriganga river of Bangladesh.
On a short trip to Ohio, my husband and I drove north on Rt 7 between Martins Ferry and East Liverpool. Rt 7 follows the west bank of the Ohio River in that area.
I always take photos while my husband drives, usually of farms or other landscapes, but in that area of Ohio, most of the landscapes I captured were power plants and other industrial scenes.
When I do this, we are moving at about 60 mph, so many of my photos are somewhat blurred, but I take them anyway. I throw out a lot, and I keep some because I like the effect or because I can use them for my abstract work. But a surprising number of them turn out quite well, despite our speeding down the highway.
The Tsuchinshan-Atlas Comet. Very windy night that couldn’t get my camera fixed on tripod, also light pollution never let me to capture a good photo using my camera, maybe needed a different setting!

We found the location for this shot in the late afternoon. Not far from Kautokeino, parking nearby and hardly any light pollution apart from the occasional cars passing through.

Marcher sur la plage
Caresser le sable
Sentir sous mes pieds
L'envie d'y danser
J'y suis née
Je ne m'en suis jamais lassée
Chaque année je me désole
