Not believing my luck yet again, I visited Ladybower with the intention of shooting Polaris (aka The North Star) over one of the pump houses on the dam wall. It was a moonlit night and the sky was quite bright. It was however very easy to see Polaris so I lined everything up so the trails were centred in the image.
Once back home, I stacked all the images in Photoshop to find I'd actually caught a feint green glow from the Aurora activity in the sky. It's a first for me and hopefully not the last!
This is 180 images of 20 second exposures shot at f2.8 with ISO640. The dynamic range on the Sony A7iii is still impressing me every time!

Polaris Hall - I have been wanting to shoot this shot for a long time. I think tonight was the perfect night for it. The structure is on the US Air Force Academy. It is named Polaris because it points at the north star.
CEFX 1003 heads up the 7 Tilden as it climbs out of the artificial mountains that are the Empire Mine tailing piles and through the junction named after the mine. The dramatic landscape created by the tailing piles shows the true costs of open pit mining, something that isn't likely to be forgotten any time soon.
The journey to get to Empire Junction is a slow one, as wether coming from the east or the west, the roads are decidedly rough. Massive potholes in the dirt/gravel roads of Miller and Rolling Mill make for a slow, bumpy journey that can take a little while - especially if you have a small car like me. My little car did valiantly pull through and I was able to get to the closet public point to the canyon made of waste rock from the Empire mine.

This is a composite image of a star trail pointed at the North Star. It was interesting trying to learn this technique, I'm quickly learning that there is a whole wealth of techniques one can learn and employ in astrophotography. I am by no means good at this but I'm intrigued by how it is accomplished and therefore I plan to keep exploring this genre.
Out of our President-Elect’s chaotic campaigning, and his pig’s breakfast of hollow promises, one central theme did emerge. There is no doubt that his one, true belief, the unwavering North Star of his world view is this: It’s all about ME !
