Zomervakantie Frankrijk 1976: omgeving Point du Raz

Point Douglas, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Hapuna Point, just south of Hapuna Beach State Park is an awesome surfing spot when the surf is up. When it's not, it's remarkably flat. Almost too flat for long duration photography.

I actually went down there to do KAP, but there was zero wind. So I set up for sunset photography instead, leaving all my KAP gear back on the beach with my family. Murphy was with me, because the wind started to pick up as the sun went down. But the time needed to go back to the beach to grab my KAP gear was more than the remaining daylight. So I stuck with the sunset.

My cable release is still working great now that it has a new cable. If your cable release quits triggering your shutter but still appears to work otherwise, change out the cable!

I'm pleased with how the colors came out on this one. I think I'm getting closer to what I've been trying to do with my long duration sunset photography. Not perfect yet, but close!

The post processing on this one deserves a little description: My camera suffers from nasty hot pixels on long exposures. Also I'm still using the 18-55mm kit lens which isn't a stellar optic, but is quite good for KAP since it's so lightweight. Here's how I dealt with both of these:

For hot pixel removal I ran across a tool called Pixel Fixer. It'll do hot pixel removal, dark subtraction, and will median multiple images to reduce noise. COOL TOOL! I used it to remove something on the order of 280 hot pixels from the RAW file for this image prior to processing. This is WAY faster than doing this manually with the rubber stamp tool in Photoshop, and does a much better job.

The 18-55mm kit lens is somewhat soft at 18mm, especially in the corners. It also suffers from noxious chromatic aberration at 18mm, though most of that is gone by 25mm. For this I wanted to shoot at 18mm so I had to deal with both of these problems.

I did a set of tests at home, and for MY lens the sweet spot at 18mm is f/10. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than wide open or stopped down to f/22. So I did this at f/10. If you own this lens, don't trust my numbers. Run your own tests and find the sweet spot for YOUR lens.

Canon, in their infinite wisdom, included the EF-S 18-55mm zoom in their list of lenses for which Canon Digital Photography Professional (DPP) has data for the Digital Lens Optimizer (DLO) operation. DLO is a very powerful tool for getting the most out of a lens. It takes out a good bit of diffraction and almost all chromatic aberration, and tunes its behavior for focal length and aperture, pulling the information out of your RAW file. For a single step operation you get a ton of bang for the buck.

But there are some tricks with using DLO. First and foremost, in the RAW panel of DPP, crank the sharpness to zero or the power of the unsharp mask to zero. THEN use DLO. THEN go back and at 200% zoom start to put the sharpness back in. Otherwise DLO introduces what looks like noise into your image.

Turns out it's not noise!

After converting a bunch of images I realized the "noise" all happened in exactly the same place in every single image. So even trying to stack images or median stack images only augmented the DLO "noise". It didn't improve it, the way median stacking will improve real noise.

I haven't figured out a real solution to the DLO artifact problem except to be cautious when applying sharpening in DPP. But for the 18-55mm lens, at least, the benefits of taking out diffraction and CA with DLO far outweighs the restrictions it places on you for sharpening. It's a really nice tool.

The Cape Point is a promontory at the southeast corner of the Cape Peninsula in the Republic of South Africa. This forma a mountainous and scenic landform that runs north-south for about 30 kilometres.

The fairest cape of all without a doubt. Cape Town is the second most populous urban area in South Africa after Johannesburg. It is also the provincial capital and major city of the Western Cape Province. Cape Town is the seat of the national parliament and is also the legislative capital of the Republic of South Africa. The city is famous for its natural beauty and floristic region as well as Table Mountain and the Cape Point. Cape Town was name the World Design Capital for 2014 and was named as the best place in the world to visit in the same year by The New York Times and The Telegraph. The first European settlement of the Cape started in 1652 when Jan van Riebeek arrived to establish a shipping outpost for the Dutch East India Company.

The Point Montara Lighthouse first saw service from 1881 to 1922 at Mayo Beach on Cape Cod. For years, it was believed that the Mayo Beach tower had been destroyed after the light was discontinued in 1922, but while conducting research for a lighthouse book, Colleen MacNeney came across a 1928 photograph of a tower in Yerba Buena, California with the following inscription: "This tower formerly used at Mayo Beach, 2d District." This discovery prompted MacNeney to dig deeper, and she eventually found correspondence in the National Archives that proved that in 1928 the Mayo Beach tower was sent from Massachusetts to Yerba Buena and then to Point Montara. Standing only 30 feet high, the lighthouse is short by most standards, but good for keeping the beam beneath the fog.

this is the old point loma lighthouse.

The Point Arena Lighthouse stands tall and proud on the Northern California Mendocino Coast.

There has been a lighthouse here since 1870. This particular lighthouse was built in 1908, replacing the original tower which had been damaged beyond repair in the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906.

This new reinforced concrete lighthouse was built by a construction company specializing in industrial smokestacks, which is why it looks like one.

The Future of Transportation The global transportation industry is going through a dramatic transformation. With high oil prices and climate change concerns, governments and the private sector are working together to create new, sustainable transportation systems. How will the automobile adapt to a low-carbon world of 9 billion people? What are the opportunities to harness big data to link with mass transits systems? How will road, rail, air and water transportation adapt and integrate?
