Which type of breast implant is safer?

This photograph depicts Miss São Paulo, Joyce Aguiar, competing in a national Miss Brasil competition. Aguiar announced she had had cosmetic surgery to narrow her nose and enlarge her breasts after the winning contestant stated that she’d also had extensive cosmetic surgery. The beauty contest sparked a national debate about “cultural imperialism”: the new popularity of breast augmentation was said to threaten an older ideal of the female body that favored smaller breasts and larger hips, buttocks and thighs. This image was taken during ethnographic fieldwork that explored how Brazil – a developing country with extremes of wealth and poverty – became a global leader in cosmetic surgery. Central research sites were public hospitals that offered free cosmetic surgeries to the poor, as well as television studios that depict, in the words of Globo network, “a population moving towards glamour and modernity.”
