The Cosmetic Surgery Clinic is a Certified Independent Health Facility through the CAAASF and surgical procedures are performed in state-of-the-art operating rooms in the building.
The last day of a surgical trip the team is busy packing so we only do a few short cases that can be done under local anesthetic and therefore do not have as involved a recovery process. So we tend to do older patients who can make do without general anesthesia.
Pedro is 29 years old, and his cleft lip repair was one of the last procedures done by Interplast on this surgical trip to Piura, Peru. Everyone in his family is a musician, and he is in music school to learn how to better play the trombone, as his dream is to play in the Piura symphony orchestra. His favorite composers are Mozart, Beethoven and Vivaldi. He used to play the drums as a child because it was an instrument that did not require anything of his mouth. But he has always loved the trombone, and three years ago decided that he was not going to let his cleft lip get in his way. He is a promising student, but his skills have plateaued because the trombone mouthpiece was not designed for a mouth with a cleft lip. His teachers told him about Interplast, so he came here and got his lip repaired.
Pedro believes that he can inspire people through his music. He wants to touch people, and the trombone really speaks to him. Hopefully, he will be able to touch more lives now with his repaired cleft lip.

The Sedal Thiruvizha festival is one of the most significant Tamil festivals to take place annually in Muthu Pallaku, Puducherry, South India during the auspicious Tamil month of Aadi (mid July-mid August). Sedal meaning pierce is performed by male and female Hindu devotees of all castes as fulfilment of a devotional vow to the female deity Sri Mariamman. After a purifying bath, the face, tongue and body are ritually pierced with small and large silver needles or long pointed spears as penance. Sacred ash is smeared on the body of larger piercings to suppress physical scarring and blood, and I didn’t see a drop. Male devotees then participate in a ritual street procession within heavy stainless steel cages, wearing sacred saffron robes to display bodies with up to 100 flesh piercings. Other devotees physically pull the Mariamman temple car or personal vehicles with sharp, curved back hooks and their own body weight. Medics are continually amazed at the rapid healing of these fleshy wounds which display minimal scarification. For devotees the Sedal Thiruvizha festival provides an important rite of passage of Hindu religious belief, and for fortunate observers, an unforgettable visual expression of the body as canvas in South India.

If Sogokope is off the beaten track, and Denu is way off the beaten track, our final stop for the weekend barely has a track. Pius has been intrigued by anecdotal stories of villages in an area called Wudoaba, also near the Togo border, but north. The stories suggest there are a great number of clefts in the area, more than expected by the population. He has done a preliminary study, but really wants to do an extended survey/study. I may try to find a way to help him do this. Stories abound in this village area that there are many who speak poorly. Also, once a week a market is held at night. No one has ever encountered this in Africa, the suggested reason being that the people who come don't want to be seen because of their clefts. There is much superstition in this complex of villages. Although I am personally skeptical, the circumstantial evidence is of interest.

I was beaten; they kicked my stomach and left me with a wrapped paper with my ears, nose and lips to take it to the government soldiers. I was taken to the hospital and got treated. But I lost my dignity, even the father of my child rejected me because I was so deformed. In 2008, staff of African Youth Initiative Network came to my home and told me they got support from UN Trust Fund for Victims (TFV) and they are assisting people who got injuries due to LRA crimes. They brought me to the hospital where I received lips reconstructions. That was the first time I saw something good happened to me.

custom, now found mainly among the older women. Younger generations of women have largely moved away from the tradition. The nose plugs are made of either wood or clay. Inhabiting the Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh, mainly the Ziro valley, Apatanis consider their women to be the most
beautiful among the tribes in the area. It is said that neighbouring tribes used to raid Apatani villages to abduct the women. The nose plugs, along with facial tattoos, were measures to make them look ugly and prevent these abductions. This photograph was taken in December 2008.
