I will survive

No, not I, I will survive

Oh as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive

I've got all my life to live and I've got all my love to give

And I'll survive, I will survive (hey, hey)

Construction of the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum began in 1858 and opened for business in 1864. It was supposed to be a revolutionary advancement in care for the mentally ill and was the brainchild of Thomas Story Kirkbride who was building on the foundation of care founded by Dorothea Dix. The building was originally designed for 250 patients to live in comfort and serenity, able to roam 600 acres of sunshine and fresh air. Unfortunately, by the 1930s, cracks began to show in the facade of treatment. By the 1950s the number of patients ballooned to over 2500 and they were literally running the asylum and outnumbered the staff. The fourth floor was destroyed by fire at one point and a few murders of patients by patients also occurred. Local newspapers did exposés over the years and the institution was finally closed in 1996, another tragic part of American history.

Spent the past week at a friend's cabin in Cook Forest, Pennsylvania. Way up in the northwest corner. No cell service which is what I sorely needed; an unplugged vacation. No tv, no phone, no internet. And it was blissful. I hiked more this past week than I have for the past year except on my home trail at my house.

Pigeon Falls is actually in Allegheny National Forest but it was close by. The directions to get there were sketchy, but we found it and we found 3 other ppl looking for them as well. A short mile hike later and we were there. The hike was certainly beautiful as well which was good because the trail was flat as it was an equestrian trail at one time, but I don't think any horses have been on it in a good while. The creek crossing was a bit harrowing, but good boots and balance saved the day.

Our Rhododendron suffered quite a bit of damage this winter from the ice and heavy snow. We lost 2 branches and now the poor thing looks bare. Next month I will gather some cuttings from it and try propagating them. My black thumb is slowly turning green.

We found a berry bush in our front yard last year. it was overgrown with apple mint and a japanese ground cover that was out of control. We watched and waited until the berries got ripe and had a handful. They were tasty, we were excited and then they were gone. Between the birds, the deer and the bears they didn't last long. This year I covered it with a net and anchored it on the ground. Today I harvested this handful and put some out on the deck railing for the birds. The deer and the bears can get their berries down in the power lines. 😉
