The Falls of Hill's Creek are a beautiful short hike just off the Highland Scenic Highway in WV. To hike down into the gorge they've built a boardwalk of 380 steps. It's very steep and before the boardwalk was built very few people would venture down into the gorge because of the steepness. The hike all the way to the last falls is only a half mile. A paved path from the parking area turns into a dirt path that brings you to the boardwalk. The first Falls were hard to see but we heard them as we got closer. This is the Middle Falls and as beautiful as it is, when there's been a lot of rain and much more water, it's spectacular. The boardwalk takes you to viewing platforms for the most advantageous view. I would've liked to go over the railing because I saw places I'd like to get photos from, but I was being respectful and staying on the boardwalk. The stairs to the lower falls are incredibly steep, but the stairway is stable. The last couple of levels are metal so be careful on a rainy day. It's well worth the hike to get down into the gorge. Even shooting pix the whole way down and back up it only took us 15 minutes each way. We had the place all to ourselves. Tourist season hasn't opened in full yet and the trees were just beginning to leaf and it was still cool, so perfect hiking conditions.

A wacky wide angle phone shot of Salisbury Cathedral. They actually encourage photography within this iconic building which makes a pleasant change. The hardest part then is capturing an image with the fewest people which is not that easy with so many from around the world keen to visit this landmark structure. This particular picture was to take advantage of the reflections in the still waters of the font.
Construction of the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum began in 1858 and opened for business in 1864. It was supposed to be a revolutionary advancement in care for the mentally ill and was the brainchild of Thomas Story Kirkbride who was building on the foundation of care founded by Dorothea Dix. The building was originally designed for 250 patients to live in comfort and serenity, able to roam 600 acres of sunshine and fresh air. Unfortunately, by the 1930s, cracks began to show in the facade of treatment. By the 1950s the number of patients ballooned to over 2500 and they were literally running the asylum and outnumbered the staff. The fourth floor was destroyed by fire at one point and a few murders of patients by patients also occurred. Local newspapers did exposés over the years and the institution was finally closed in 1996, another tragic part of American history.
