The 9th Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party took place in Madison Square Park June 11-12, 2011. The weekend-long event occurs every June and brings together the country’s top pitmasters who cook up their award-winning food for over a 100,000 barbecue enthusiasts.
Set against the beautiful backdrop of Madison Square Park, the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party attracts people from near and far to sustain and celebrate America’s authentic culinary and musical traditions.
Arturo Ramón II arrived at the Center Point Volunteer Fire Department on July 5, just a day after floodwaters tore through the building. With only a few people on site shoveling mud, he offered to cook for them and slept under a tree that first night. Seventeen days later, he’s still there—now joined by family and friends—serving thousands of meals to volunteer search-and-rescue crews like the United Cajun Navy, Team Josey, and local residents. World Central Kitchen has since partnered with him to help sustain the effort. A celebrated Texas pitmaster from Wimberley and founder of Blanco River Meat Company, Ramón has been featured on BBQ Brawl (Food Network), American Grilled (Travel Channel), Smoked (Destination America), and the Cooking Channel.
The 2009 Snapple Big Apple Barbecue Block Party. Fifteen of the nation’s top pitmasters showcased their unique, award-winning regional barbecue styles, including new additions from Alabama, Tennessee and Missouri.

The Houston Texans hosted the Salute to Service barbeque cookoff featuring the BBQ Pitmasters, the Texans Brew Crew, and Pitts & Spitts. More than two hundred service members were treated to a barbeque meal and entertainment. (Nov. 1, 2012. USO Photography by Mark Matson.)
