Native to California, Monterey pine has been widely planted in Hawai'i as a windbreak, potential timber species, and reforestatation species, especially in upland areas on Maui. However, seed from pine trees blows in the wind and pines can spread widely, especially in alpine shrublands. Monterey pine is NOT recommended for planting in new areas in Hawai'i. The monumental shrine of Our Lady of Ta' Pinu was built between 1920 and 1931. It is also an architectural masterpiece, especially its interior, with its superb sculptures and craftsmanship of designs on Maltese stone. The sanctuary was constructed adjacent to a still existent chapel where the young Karmni Grima is said to have received a message for prayer from Our Lady back in 1883.

Pinus edulis, the state tree of New Mexico, is common to the Taos area. Perhaps most similar to the Mexican Pinus cembroides in having mostly 2 (3) needles per fascicle, the leaves of Pinus edulis are over 1 mm in width. This region that descends in elevation from Taos to Española transitions out of the expanses of sagebrush steppe and is essentially devoid of Bromus tectorum. This site lies along highway 68 just to the southwest of Taos, Taos County, New Mexico, about where the highway and the Rio Grande meet.
